Wami Katanga | Bolla Zambia
Ndola, Zambia

Zambia women’s national team attacker Siomala Mapepa has come out to defend herself against recent claims by her club, Elite Ladies, that she exhibits low levels of discipline.

On Sunday, the Lusaka-based FAZ Women’s Super League side released a contentious statement claiming the 21-year old winger had been absent from training for a whole week and only showed on Friday, a day prior to the team’s league fixture away to Chipata Girls in Eastern Province.

Elite further claimed that Mapepa had asked to be excused from the trip to Chipata and gave no reason for having missed training the whole week.

However, Mapepa has refuted the claims by the club and insists that she had not missed training for a day evident by her having being named in the team’s 18-member squad that entered camp ahead of the trip to Chipata.

Speaking in a phone call interview, Mapepa told Bolla Zambia that she had excused herself from the trip to Chipata as she was not comfortable with club’s traveling arrangements.

Mapepa claimed that the team had to be made to travel to Chipata at midnight on the actual day of the fixture, something that was rather too risky for her.

“They are saying I am indiscipline but the issue was, I trained fully the whole week, I even trained in the afternoon before we entered camp,

“When we entered camp we were told the bus would come for us to travel to Chipata around 09:00 hours but it never arrived, then we were told it will come an hour later claiming that the bus that was to come take us had been coming from Kitwe” Mapepa explained.

“We waited until it was midnight, that is when the bus arrived to take us to Chipata and yes I did refuse to travel with the team and it was because of the time they wanted us to travel, it was risky to travel around that time.”

“If I was indiscipline as they claim, then why was I in the 18-member squad that was in camp, my only crime is to have refuse to take the risk of traveling at an odd hour.”

Mapepa also denied claims that she had not informed the club of her decision to remained behind in Lusaka on Friday.

“I didn’t just refuse for no reason and I even sent Mr Oliver [Shalala] a text message to say I decided to not to travel because the time was too awkward and I wasn’t at peace with traveling at such an hour,

“In the morning, I found a reply text him and he was saying that even if I didn’t travel the team would still perform well and I also replied to him and said I didn’t say or wish that the team would lose and then later I only saw them posting that I was indiscipline and refused to travel.”

Meanwhile, Mapepa also complained about the financial state at the club and claimed she had not received her salary for the past two years.

“I signed my contract Elite [Ladies] back in 2020 and it was Lusaka Dynamos that time, I have only gotten my salary twice, even as we speak now we don’t get paid at Elite,

“I would also love to ask that if as a player you are at a club where you don’t paid and you just ask from club leaders for money to sort out bills of even just a K500 or K1000, can that money be considered to be salary?” she asked.

“I don’t know if they consider that to be part of the salary but I think what should be done is that they should pay according to what is written in the contract.”

Mapepa emerged top scorer in the 2021/22 season with Elite before going on to star for the Copper Queens at the 2022 WAFCON tournament in Morocco.

Her performances saw her attract interest from clubs including abroad but Mapepa claims the club has continously shown little interest to process her transfer even after expressing interest to leave the club.

Mapepa also claimed that the club had threatened to ensure she does not receive any call-ups to the national team if she had insisted on leaving Elite.

“I have had a number of offers from different teams outside the country but Elite have blocked all the moves” she said.

An Angry World
Undiluted Gospel
Tue, Dec 18

The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. James 3:17

The world, in the last few years, has reverted to a sort of barbarism. As practical Christianity has declined, rudeness and violence have increased. Neighbors quarrel with neighbors. Fighting is a major problem in our schools and the “gang wars” of the teenagers have come to present a serious menace in our towns and cities. Fathers and mothers wrangle and bicker. Homes are disintegrating. High government officials in Lusaka engage in name-calling and in heated disputes not at all in keeping with the dignity of their office. Why and how has all this savagery crept into our social life? It is because we have forgotten Jesus’ words, “Happy are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth.” I have seen tough, rough, hardened men open their hearts by faith, receive Christ as Savior, and become gentle, patient, merciful gentlemen.

Pray 🙏
Fill me with Your mercy and love, Lord. In an angry world let me be used to bring peace where there is strife.

8. New Curriculum for Form 4 will be implemented in 2028.
9. Priority in syllabus review/development and materials development in 2024 shall be given to the levels that will be implemented in 2025.
10. SBA will be the a key assessment approach to the new Curriculum. For example, pupils may be required to conduct their own news gathering project and write a proper news article as a demonstration of their competency in article writing. Field trips to local radio stations and major news companies shall supplement classroom learning.
11. Literature in English, despite it appearing under the social sciences subject grouping shall continue being offered by the languages department.
12. There is a new Education Policy 2023 called *Education for Sustainability* replacing the 1996 Educating Our Future which is currently undergoing the statutory approval process. It will provide more clarity on few other matters.
13. The Standards and Evaluation Guidelines is equally undergoing review to align it with the new Curriculum.

Barbra Banda’s Historic Boots Officially on Display at FIFA Museum

By FAZ Media ✍️

FIFA Museum have opened the display for the FIFA Women’s World Cup which includes Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda’s boots when she scored the 1,000th goal of the tournament.

Banda scored the historic goal from the spot in the 3-1 over Costa Rica in a Group C match and apart from the boots, the ball used to score the 1,000th goal is also on display at the landmark museum in Zurich that has one of the most comprehensive collections of objects dedicated to international football.

FIFA Chief Women’s Football Officer Sarai Bareman said the newly opened segment at the FIFA Museum is a celebration of women's football which offers fans a glimpse of some of the standout objects from the recent tournament.

“The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will for sure go down in history as the game changing moment that took women’s football to the next level,” Bareman said.

“To see it immortalised in a showcase at the FIFA Museum, where fans can come and remember this landmark tournament is amazing. What a beautiful way to wrap up this year of women’s football.”

From boots to jerseys, as well as match balls as tactical notes, the FIFA Museum has brought together significant objects that will tell the story of the historical tournament to future generations.

One of football’s biggest talents, Linda Caicedo’s home shirt is also on display at the Museum, and so are Korea Republic’s Casey Phair’s boots, who celebrated her 16th birthday only 26 days before the start of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, making her the youngest player to ever partake in the tournament.

Other objects include Yoshimi Yamash*ta’s headset, who made history as the first referee to announce a VAR decision live in the stadium, in the tournament’s opening match between New Zealand and Norway.

Being baptized in the Holy Spirit is a concept in Christian theology, particularly in Pentecostal and charismatic traditions. It is often associated with an experience where believers receive a special empowerment and anointing from the Holy Spirit. This experience is sometimes referred to as being "filled with the Holy Spirit" or "baptized in the Holy Spirit."The biblical basis for this concept is found in the New Testament, particularly in passages like Acts 2, where the apostles received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. In Acts 1:5, Jesus also speaks of a baptism in the Holy Spirit.Different Christian denominations interpret and emphasize this experience in various ways, with some placing a strong emphasis on speaking in tongues as a sign of being baptized in the Holy Spirit. It's important to note that beliefs and practices related to the baptism in the Holy Spirit can vary among Christian traditions.

The Greatness of His Favor
Undiluted Gospel
Tue Dec 12

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us...raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:47, NKJV)

Often times, people set their focus on what God has done in the past—how He parted the Red Sea, or stopped the sun for Joshua, or fed thousands of people with just a little boy’s small lunch. Yes, God has performed many amazing miracles throughout history, and it’s important that we give Him praise and glory. But at the same time, we also have to look forward to what God wants to do in our lives today. In this verse, Paul says that “in the ages to come” God would do things that far supersede anything He’s ever done before. I believe that the “ages to come” that he’s talking about is this day and time we’re living in right now. God wants to outdo Himself in our generation!

Remember, God is a God of increase. Where you are today is not where you are supposed to stay. He has greater levels of His favor and blessing in store for you. Dare to dream big! Dare to keep a God-sized vision in front of you! Dare to take hold of every blessing that the Lord has in store for you!

PRAY 🙏
Father, thank You for Your faithfulness in my life. Today I open my heart and mind to You so that I can see the greatness of what You want to do in my life. Use me for Your glory. Thank You for Your favor in Jesus name. Amen.

Maina Soko: Who she really was
The mystery woman revealed 55 years after she was shot dead

By JACK ZIMBA

IN 1965, a woman called Maina Soko was shot dead by the Southern Rhodesian (now Zimbabwe) soldiers on the Zambezi River, in Chiawa area.

The story would have ended there, but over the years, Maina Soko’s story became a source of conspiracy theories, triggered largely by the fact that a military hospital was named after her, as well as a major road in Ndola, and two other roads in Livingstone and Chipata respectively.

Maina Soko Military Hospital in Lusaka was initially a maternity annex for the University Teaching Hospital, built in the 1960s.
Then in 1979, it was converted into a military hospital to take care of military casualties of the liberation wars in Southern Africa.

Currently, Government is spending US$140 million to expand the hospital.

Thus, Maina Soko – an ordinary citizen with no known military background – had her name immortalised in a top-class military facility, and she, herself, became somewhat an enigmatic figure.

To some, she was a spy involved in covert military operations during the liberation war of Southern Rhodesia, ferrying Zambian soldiers disguised as luggage in a canoe across the Zambezi River into enemy territory.

And some wilder conspiracy theorists even allege an affair between Maina Soko and former President Kenneth Kaunda.

About two years ago, my quest to discover who Maina Soko really was did not yield much, as there are no records about her anywhere, not even at the institution that she is named after. Information gleaned was scanty and mostly speculative.

It resulted in an open-ended article that was published in the Zambia Daily Mail on May 26, 2018.

Then three weeks ago, a new lead popped up. A tall aging man claiming to be Maina Soko’s grandson, and the only living eyewitness to her shooting, came forth. He also has an unforgettable name: Boygweda Petro.

I had come across his name in my earlier investigation two years ago.

It is said that Maina’s children died before the age of five. However, one girl she called Megi did grow into a woman and she had a child she called Boygweda.

But Boygweda did not grow in his mother’s house because he was ostracized by his father, who thought he was not his blood. And so he was raised by his grandmother Maina Soko from his infancy.

“Maina Soko took me in and started feeding me milk from a bottle until I grew and she enrolled me in school. It took time for me to know that she was not my real mother. I used to call her mother,” says Boygweda.

Megi died in 2018 before I could interview her about Maina Soko.

Boygweda himself had settled in Petauke district in Eastern Province, unaware that he held a vital piece to a historical puzzle, until recently when he travelled to Lusaka.

He gave an account of the events surrounding Maina Soko’s killing.

One day in 1965, when Boygweda was 17 years old, and in third grade, he was told to es**rt his grandmother to Chirundu.

Maina Soko was in the early stage of developing leprosy, and at Chikankata was a mission hospital specialised in treating the disease.

According to Boygweda, he, Maina Soko and her younger brother called William Kandoko, left their village called Ndolo on the fringes of the Zambezi River in Chiawa area early one morning (he does not recall what month it was, but he says the year was 1965).

The mission was to travel upriver on the Zambezi by canoe to Chirundu, since vehicles never reached the area at the time, and then travel by road to reach Chikankata.

By this time, Maina had already been widowed many years and was living with her younger brother, William.

She had been married to Enoch Manenga, who had later also married his older brother’s wife after he died.

There is no photograph of Maina Soko, but Boygweda describes her as slightly built and light complexioned.

It is also not clear how old Maina Soko was when she died, but the birth year on her younger brother, William’s national registration card shows that he was born in 1918.

Maina Soko could not have been very old.

“We carried some mealie-meal and blankets and started off,” recalls Boygweda.

He says about mid-day, he said to Maina Soko: “I’m hungry, can we stop over to eat?”

They got off the canoe and, gathering some sticks, made a fire and prepared a meal.

“But my grandmother did not eat,” says Boygweda.

After their brief stop, they proceeded on their journey, but would be violently interrupted.

In the evening, Boygweda heard a single gunshot from an island called Humaile, which is near the confluence of the Zambezi and Kafue River, across the border with Zimbabwe.

“Mai ine nalasiwa (I’ve been shot)! Boygweda heard his grandmother cry.

He says his uncle, William, immediately jumped out of the boat and swam across the river.

But Boygweda managed to paddle the boat to the edge of the river and tied it to some reeds then attended to his grandmother.

“I didn’t want to leave my grandmother inside the boat, so I lifted her out and laid her on the bank of the river,” he says.

A bullet had entered Maina Soko’s body through her back and she could not stand.

With a little breath remaining in her, Maina Soko told her grandson to run for his life.

“I ran and after a short distance I looked behind to see if my grandmother was following me, she beckoned me with her hand to move on,” says Boygweda.

Frightened, the boy took flight into the thick bush along the river, and decided to follow the only sign of human presence – a cluster of lights in a distance, for night had now fallen.

Soon, he burst into a police station and reported the shooting.

Boygweda remembers one police officer who attended to the case. His name was Kilyot Kamba.

Shortly at the police station, Boygweda was joined by his uncle, William.

The boy then led police to the spot where he had left his grandmother.
But reaching the place, they found no-one, and the canoe had drifted back into the river.
Under torchlight, they searched for Maina Soko.

After a brief search, they discovered her body lying on the sandy river bank, almost completely buried by the sand washed up by the Zambezi.

They washed her body, put it in a boat, and, that same night, transported it to UTH in Lusaka by vehicle.

Maina Soko is buried at Chingwere cemetery.

Last week, Boygweda travelled back to Chiawa to reconnect with his past.

Now aged 72, it was the first time he was returning to Chiawa since 1966.

Ndolo village, where he lived with his grandmother no longer exists, but Boygweda was able to find some of his relatives.

One of them is Mayisana Soko, who is Boygweda’s aunt.

She was a young girl back in 1965, living in the same homestead with Maina Soko.

But she recalls her father (Willian), Boygweda and Maina Soko leaving for Chirundu on the fateful day.
Her account of events corroborates Boygweda’s narrative.

But Mayisana did not know that her aunt’s name had been immortalised into a military hospital.

She says she only discovered that there existed a hospital named after her aunt last year.

“When I saw it, I dropped my bags and wept. I was overcome with grief,” she says.

For filmmaker Abdon Yezi, whom I worked with on the story, the latest information presents a major breakthrough in discovering who Maina Soko really was, but it still falls short in completely debunking the conspiracy theories surrounding her life and death.

“Sometimes we still have one aspect or another that emerges, especially when you put a story of this nature in the public domain,” he says. “For instance, we still need to explore who initiated and influenced the decision that Maina Soko be immortalised, including the naming of a strategic instalment – a military hospital. Was it done on recommendation from the security forces or otherwise? Was it through Cabinet at that time? I’m sure there still exists the older generation who would guide us around that.”

He adds: “What I’m particularly impressed with though is that we have taken this story to a level where we now know exactly what happened on the material day, who was there, and the actual incident scene. This means that for the wider citizenry, the issue of who Maina Soko was has also been addressed.”

Mr Yezi is now working on a documentary about Maina Soko.

“This being yet another of Zambia’s untold stories of the liberation struggle that I have pursued, including the Kavalamanja series, it is humbling that the bits and pieces associated with the Maina Soko story have come together,” he says.

The filmmaker wants the story of Maina Soko to be included in the school curriculum.

“Each time a historical production of this nature comes up, people ask if it is possible to pursue the Ministry of General Education to incorporate this rich history in the school curriculum. If not, what could be done to preserve the story for generations to come? This is a matter that we need to pursue further on this and many other stories that define us as a people and nation,” he says.

Mr Yezi also wants to lobby for a permanent memorial to honour Maina Soko in her home area, Chiawa.

“A public infrastructure, say a school or mini-hospital could be constructed in her honour even around her village or otherwise. It is time people like Maina Soko were celebrated differently,” he says.

Five decades later, Boygweda still has unanswered questions about his grandmother’s killing.

“I don’t know why they fired on us,” he says.

But in 1965, Southern Rhodesia had flared up into civil war, pitting the colonial government of Ian Smith against the majority indigenous people fighting for independence. That war, which lasted until 1979, would soon spill into Zambia, which suffered many casualties through bombings.

It appears Maina Soko was the first victim of the spill-over war. Could that then explain the significance attached to her? Maybe.

Spotlight on Reuben; the singer behind ‘Kale’
By MARY MBEWE
IF you have been within the country for the past few months, you have probably heard some very amazing gospel lyrics that go something like:
“Mwansalile elyo akasuba takalabako…
Mwansalile elyo umweshi taulafuma…
Lesa, kale mwatile nkenda nobe…”
You have, right?
And if you have, didn’t you at one point think it’s actually a woman behind the same lyrics?
I wouldn’t really blame you if you did because I for one also thought so at one point.
But as strange as it might sound, the singer behind the hit ‘Kale’ whom most Zambians think is a woman is actually a man named Reuben.
I recently caught up with this singer whom fellow gospel singers like Inoccent ‘Alumbwe’ Mumba recently described as the most happening gospel singer currently.
His full names are Reuben Kabwe originally from Mufulira town on the Copperbelt.
The story of this man who was born in 1988 is touching. Very touching actually.
His father’s names are Gilbert Kabwe and Mable Kabwe and is the first born in a family of 8.
According to Reuben, his childhood was not so pleasant as his parents were not well to do and were sickly. He said his mother had anaemia while his father had cancer and his main occupation was selling merchandise at some market in Mufulira.
He said the suffering his family was going through was so serious that at one time, he got so fed up that he attempted su***de.
“I used to feel bad seeing my parents struggling just to take care of my siblings and I. So, one day I decided to end my life, and I drank some medicine with the intention of killing myself but nothing happened even after taking that medicine,” recalls Reuben.
He recalled that as a child growing up in a community full of school drop outs, he also ended up quitting school just in Grade 3.
“The compound where I come from, there are people who are not educated so there isn’t really anyone you can look up to who has done well for themselves. So I stopped school in grade three due to some financial constraints and I did not really have a role model who could push me to stay in school,” he said.
Reuben recalled that after dropping out of school, it wasn’t long before he became a street kid.
“At some point, life became very difficult for me and I stopped school in grade three and I ran off to the streets where I became a street kid for three years due to the hardships I was facing,” said Reuben.
He recalled that it had to take a Good Samaritan to pull him out of the streets and put him back in school.
“After being in the streets for a long time, a Good Samaritan picked me from the streets and sent me back to school where I started school in grade seven and I managed to pass to grade eight,” he said.
But just when he started seeing light at the end of the tunnel, the merciless hand of death struck the Good Samaritan who was supporting him. Reuben had no idea on how he was going to support his education.
But God came in for him. The Lord made the young Reuben realise that the singing talent he had been overlooking for many years is exactly what he should use to get to the next stage of life.
He said that although he had been singing since the tender age of 8, he never took his singing talent seriously. But this time around, he started using his singing talent to raise money for his education.
He said that through this experience, he learnt one important lesson concerning why God at times allows bad things to happen to people. He said he believes God allowed his sponsor to pass on so that he could realise the value of his singing talent.
“Sometimes life gets tough but that does not mean one should give up on life and when bad things happen in life, one has to encourage themselves and just forge ahead. Despite what I went through in life I managed to complete my grade twelve, though I didn’t manage to find someone to sponsor me to do my tertiary education that’s how I decided to take music seriously,” he said adding that he intends to further his studies.
While trying to discover himself properly, Reuben reveals that he made one or two mistakes and failed to resist the temptation of s*x before marriage. That’s how he fathered 2 children with a young lady whom he is yet to marry as she is currently in school.
But Reuben learnt from his mistakes, sought God’s forgiveness and started working to get his life and music career back on track.
Reuben has thus been perfecting his music talent since the mid 2000s.
Interestingly, although most gospel music lovers are only getting to hear of the ‘Kale’ hit track now, it was actually recorded and released way back in his debut album in 2007.
Reuben admitted that he also at times gets surprised that the ‘Kale’ song is only receiving serious attention now despite being released in 2007 in an album which was heavily promoted.
But the singer feels anything has its own time. He said if God has not given a go ahead for something, nothing can happen no matter how much human effort is made.
Early this year, Reuben released the Naileta album. Reuben also included a remix of ‘Kale’ in this best selling album. This album is currently receiving massive airplay on local radio stations. It had also been grabbing the No. 1 spot on the Sound Top 20 Chart.
And Reuben also admitted that despite making a number of televison appearances, a lot of gospel music lovers still think he is a woman.
“Just last week, I was on radio Christian voice and callers were asking if Reuben was a woman or a man, those who think Reuben is a woman they have it all wrong, Reuben is a man,” he laughed.
Asked to comment on the rising cases of singers seeking powers from witch doctors to boost their music sales, Reuben said turning to traditional doctors is not the answer.
“A witchdoctor cannot bless you. That’s why you find someone gets rich fast and within a short period, everything vanishes, so it is not good for a Christian to involve themselves in charms,” said Reuben.
The singer also took time to encourage those struggling and lacking direction in life to look to God because only Him would show them the way.
He explained that as a person who has struggled nearly all of his life, he knows exactly how God can lift a person from being a zero to a hero as long as that person entrusts his life to God.
“No one knew that God would bless me in such a way. Even in my family, my life is a testimony and whenever they see me on TV, they fail to understand, because they have seen where I have come from and what I have been through,” said the artiste.
The singer who has since relocated to Lusaka and congregates at Tabernacle Mission also pays glowing tribute to his manager Sugar Ray for helping him in his music career.
