CHIPOLOPOLO INTENSIFY AFCON PREPS

The Chipolopolo has hit the ground running ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with 30 players going through the paces at National Heroes Stadium today.

Coach Avram Grant and his technical bench have the benefit of having most players plying their trade abroad already in camp to join their local counterparts.

The team mid-morning session was held under drizzling conditions that did not deter the lads from getting on with their business.
Coach Avram Grant will carry less than 27 players to Saudi Arabia for the international camp that kicks off on January 1.

Only Patson Daka (Leicester City-England), Lameck Banda (Lecce-Italy), Fashion Sakala (Al Fayha-Saudi Arabia), Frankie Musonda (AYR United-Scotland) and Roderick Kabwe (Zakho Sport-Iraq) are not yet part of the squad.

The Confederation of African Football has set January 3 as the deadline for teams to submit their final 23 member squads with the option having four more on standby.

Initially CAF compelled all participating teams to submit provisional lists of up to 55 players by December 14 which Zambia complied with.

During the Saudi Arabia camp Zambia will play Cameroon on January 9 in Jeddah with another match lined up on January 5. The opponent for the January 5 window is yet to be finalized.
Zambia opens its AFCON account on January 17 against Congo DR before facing Tanzania four days later.

The final group match is it Morocco on January 24.
Here are some selected snaps from the team training session at National Heroes Stadium as captured by the FAZ Media Team.

The Witch Doctor Again!

I was so surprised to see this gentleman in his signature white shirt leading the French Women Football team out yesterday. Happy for him that his team got one over Brazil, one of the favourite teams out there.

But then, isn't that what the World Cup has been about. What an interesting tournament so far, with so-called minnows rising to the occasion. Jamaica. Phillipines. Panama. Morocco. South Africa almost made away with a victory over Argentina. And then, beautiful Colombia today, with Caicedo on fire. Oh, what does one say about our own Super Falcons. Super!

Back to Herve Renard. I didn't know that he had been named Coach to the French Women Football team months back. The last time I saw him on screen was at the last World Cup in Qatar, where he led an unfancied Saudi team to a first round win over eventual World Cup winner, Argentina.

Before then, Renard had made a tour across Africa, starting with his appointment as Coach of the Zambian National Football team in 2008. He would leave in 2010 to coach Angola, and later a club in Algeria, before returning to Zambia to lead the country to a shock victory in the African Nations Cup final against Ivory Coast in 2012.

Renard would leave again the year after, have a stint with Sochaux in France before joining Cote d'Ivoire in 2014, leading the country to beat Ghana in the final to win the 2015 African Nations Cup, becoming the first and only Coach to lift the trophy with 2 different teams.

Renard would later go back to France to take charge of Lille before returning again to Africa, to take charge of Morocco, which he led to qualify for 2018 World Cup, only to leave after elimination of the country in the 2019 African Nations Cup. It was after his exit that he joined Saudi Arabia.

Renard obviously made his mark in Africa. He was named CAF Coach of the Year for 2012, 2015 and 2018. For his exploits in leading the Chipolopolo of Zambia to its first African Cup of Nations triumph, he earned himself the nickname, “Witch-doctor”.

He was, at various times, linked with the Super Eagles job, one being a rumoured agreement between him and the Football Association that was said to have been eventually punctured by the unexpected win of the 2013 African Nations Cup by Stephen Keshi-led team.

There is just something about Renard that stands him out. Some say he is flamboyant. His air of self-confidence, which might be seen as arrogance, is one I have only seen in the Special one, Jose Mourinho. I believe that whatever it is about Renard, it has surely helped his career.

With the win over Brazil, Renard again makes history became the first manager to win a match at the Men and Women's World Cup.

CLIFFORD MULENGA Writes

A huge congratulations to Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), Coach Bruce Mwape and the SHEPOLOPOLO girls team for the greatest achievement in Zambian football history for qualifying to the Women's Football World Cup 2023.

Expectations were high but unfortunately could not be fulfilled. Most important thing is that we have been there, learnt a lot, the bar has been set high and more will be expected.

Back to the drawing board shouldn't just focus on what should have been but should be about creating foundations to improve our women's football which is improving the standards of the women's leagues, women's youth leagues and coaches should also be empowered with more knowledge of Women's football.

Bruce Mwape has done a tremendous job and much respect to him. He will be very crucial going forward as he understands women's football as is evident by his achievements with the SHEPOLOPOLO team.

The girls should be proud of themselves and savor this historic achievement. You are HEROINES and we salute you.

Salute to the Ministry of Sport as well for the support they have given the team and more is expected from them.

Clifford Mulenga Writes

Local Football clubs need to invest more in local football players. PAY THEM WELL. It's very sad to hear how most of the local players complain about being underpaid while their foreign teammates get big salaries and sign on fees including accommodation allowances. It's the reason most clubs don't consistently perform well because the local boys are frustrated and some of them turn to alcohol and gambling. The living conditions of some of these professional footballers is very disheartening. I hope the PLAYER'S UNION can engage with the Local football clubs to promote the welfare of the footballers.

Local football players in Zambia have been exploited for a very long time and no one talks about it. If our football is going to improve, clubs need to start taking good care of their players.

The number of Foreign players in a team shouldn't be limited but do some DUE DELIGENCE on the type of Foreign players you sign. Having more Foreign players that play for their National Teams should be encouraged because this raises our Local leagues status and improves our chances of doing well in continental competitions.

LOCAL FOOTBALL CLUBS PLEASE TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR LOCAL FOOTBALLERS.

DISAPPOINTED ZAMBIA NATIONAL TEAM STAR
FASHION SAKALA WRITES

GOD BLESS 🙏🏿
Being called for National Team games has and will always be an honour to me. However this time it has been very difficult and by far the worst experience of my entire career.

Over the years I have endured the pain of being insulted endlessly by the Zambian fans for my style of playing, game after game. The game we had in South Africa on the 26th March 2023 was no different as I was brutally insulted, being called selfish etc by Zambian fans at the Stadium before the game started.

I am a winger. I am highly trained to dribble , cause threats to opponents and have as many touches as it profits the team to have more chances and I believe that’s why I have been playing successfully in Europe for 7 years .

I have no doubt that my performances in Europe contribute immensely in the decisions that grant me being called for National team games and to add value to the squad.

I am very disappointed in the Zambian fans for the vicious insults and endlessly booing directed to me, when I have done nothing but show hard work, sacrifice, dedication and commitment to win games for my country.

I appreciate the support I’m receiving from my family,National team coach, the entire management, my team mates and all the fans that has shown me love and support

I will continue to wear my national team jersey with pride because Zambia represent unity.
