MEET WOII THE WOMAN SNIPER, ..was part of the team that killed the Mailoni brothers

By Buffalo reporter

Going behind gender lines, Warrant Officer Class II (WOII) Manda Mary was among the troops from the Zambia Amy that were deployed in an operation to gun down the famous Mailoni brothers, Mika, Fabian, and Stephano.

The recurring murders in Central Province between 2007 and 2013 prompted authorities to combine defence and security efforts to close the evil chapter of the serial killers, who terrified the people of Luano Valley.

However, before becoming WOII Manda Mary, she was born on October 6, 1984, in Chingola, and years later went on to pursue her primary education at Chalata Primary School.

She then went on to complete her secondary education at Ibolelo, where she managed to get a grade twelve certificate.

And on April 1st, 2005, after seven months of vigorous training at Munkulungwe Training Area in Tag Argan, Ndola, WOII Manda became a soldier, ready to defend and serve the people of Zambia.

After her pass out, she was sent to 3ZR, Chidwin Barracks, in Kabwe, as her first unit at the rank of private. A few months later, she was taken to the Military Training Establishment of Zambia to pursue a Skill at Arms course, which later made her an instructor in the unit during the regimentation of new soldiers.

She also went on to pursue a sniper course in preparation for the tasks she would encounter in her line of duty as she progressed in her military career.

At the rank of corporal, WOII Manda was a sniper and an instructor, two challenging roles for any soldier.

A sniper is a military marksman who engages a weapon to attack far-away targets. They typically possess advanced training and are armed with highly precise weapons, and they spend most of their days training and preparing to be deployed at any time.

In 2013, after about 8 years of service, she was selected as one of the troops that had been called upon to cease the dreadful murder spree of the Mailoni brothers.

It is believed that the Mailoni brothers forcibly displaced hundreds of families out of fear of becoming victims of the trio’s killing spree.

She explained that the hardest part about the operation was that the locals would tell stories of superstitions surrounding the trio and how so many people had traveled to try and end the unrelenting torment.

However, WOII Manda says despite being told about all these stories that cannot be proved scientifically or were beyond human understanding, she and her team managed to focus on their goal, which was to kill and bring an end to the misery of Luano people.

With the valley being one of the areas that had remained isolated largely due to a poor road network, foot patrolling was the only means the troops would use.

Having grown up in Luano Valley, the brothers were masters of their environment; this posed a challenge to troops as they would not carry out other operational duties such as es**rt duty and conducting patrols.

"Sometimes the locals would tell us that the Mailoni brothers were here and that they headed in a certain direction; we would follow footprint trails, but we would discover that they were heading in the opposite direction of their footprints," she narrates.

Finally, several factors conspired against the brothers as new tactics were adopted, and these included adopting civil attire to masquerade as locals.

The long hunt for the Mailoni brothers came to an end on June 24, 2013, when a Zambia Army soldier, sent together on the mission with WOII Mary managed to shoot down the trio, marking the end of the notorious trio.

At a distance, the killings may have been seen as an exaggerated myth, but for Joe Shapela, at the rank of private (Pte), what was perceived as impossible for the people of Luano Valley.

On that day, Pte Shapela was informed by villagers that they had seen the Mailoni brothers' footprints, and the soldiers tracking them.

Pte Shapela and his colleagues eventually came face to face with the Mailoni, who were charging at them with spears, but fortunately, Pte Shapela was quick to pull his trigger, knocking the brothers to the ground.

Legend has it that their mother, who had fled Kabwe in fear for her own life from her sons, availed herself after they were shot dead to identify their bodies.

As the tragic chapter of the trio came to an end, the expedition to arrest the brothers and the lapses in security are clear indications that the police service should strengthen their manhunting procedures to avoid the longevity of manhunts of this kind.

Her zeal to pursue further missions is packed with the bare essentials of life, despite the risks and hardships that come with going to war or delivering sanity to local communities where peace is threatened.

WOII Manda was sent out on another challenging mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) under the Zambian Battalion 4 (ZAMBATT 4) in 2018, where she was deployed as a protection force, making her the only woman sniper among the troops.

As a sniper, she played an important role in being on the lookout for suspicious vehicles or persons that would try to attack ZAMBATT or threaten peace in the area.

"We rotated with other snipers with our sniper rifles night and day."

"Our main task was to monitor certain areas to deal with enemies in armoured vehicles."

She is currently in Mongu Western Province on an operation called Kozo, living up to her mandate as a soldier to defend the integrity and sovereignty of Mother Zambia.

With all her strength, she juggles motherhood and being a soldier and executes all her duties with the utmost professionalism and valour.

A skilled sniper, WOII Manda takes pride in her ability to use any kind of weapon, including heavy machine guns.

PHOTOS: Man Undergoes Height Lengthening Surgery To Grow Taller

A man, Moses Gibson, from Minneapolis, Minnesota in the United States, has undergone a leg surgery to add five inches to his height after struggling to talk to women for years due to self-doubt about his stature.

Gibson said he had been insecure about his height since he was 15 years old, after witnessing other boys his age go through growth spurts that he did not, Daily Mail reports on Wednesday.

He tried medications and even contacted a 'spiritual healer' online who claimed to be able to help him in a desperate attempt to grow taller.

Gibson eventually decided to have surgery to increase his height after all other options failed.

Speaking of his struggles with his height, he said, “I've struggled with my height. Even when I was in high school, I was always unhappy with my height.

“When I was like 15, I realised most of my peers were taller than me. It started getting to me gradually.”

He learned about a procedure that could lengthen his legs, and he began working extra hours to save up enough money for the surgery during college.

After working as a software engineer during the day and as an Uber driver at night for three years, he underwent surgery to add three inches to his height in 2016, but seven years later has had a second round and is using a height lengthening device.

Doctors broke Gibson's tibia and fibula bones and inserted magnetic, limb-lengthening nails into them.

He must now use a height-lengthening device three times per day, pulling the cut bones apart one millimeter at a time.

1) Marry at a young age, if possible in your 20s; don’t worry, money will come once you marry.

2) Marriage brings blessings and opens closed doors.

It doesn’t matter that you don’t have a stable income; once you marry, doors will open because the scripture says that he who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.

3) Children bring blessings. Things will begin to work in your life once you have a child.

These three pieces of advice from the older generation of Nigerians have ruined a generation, made a lot of people live a miserable life, and pushed millions of young people into poverty.

It is a trap and sc^am; don’t fall for it.

Children are not eggs they won’t break

When I started working from home full time one thing I quickly changed was to remove my children from the internet and gadgets. Since I am a woman in tech, you might be wondering why I had to do that yet technology seems to be a good thing. Yes, technology is good but if we overcompensate our lack and excessively raise these kids with internet, we are destroying them.

I simply put a rule .” Monday - Friday no one will be using the internet and no one will be playing computer games “. We simply have to do school work during these days . Well I became the enemy of the house. They where used to their routine of coming from school , do their homework hurriedly and get on the computer for at least 6 hours a day.

What kind of generation do I want to breed? I remember one suffered from tech withdrawal symptoms, it was like he needed some rehabilitation. He had got so addicted to scrolling and using his laptop. Sometimes he felt so irritated and agitated but I had to stand my ground. I knew he won’t break. The options were to play with the dog outside or sleep.

Excessive use of technology can cause mental health issues , such as depression and anxiety. It can also reduce self-confidence, life satisfaction, and emotional stability. Children who are addicted to technology and gaming tend to be tense, unable to relax, and sleep-deprived. You can’t even send your child to get a glass of water because they would react and say you are disturbing them.

The unfortunate part for most parents is we do not even take the time to understand what our children are consuming on the internet. We are showering them with the internet and phones at a young age, an age which does not know what to consume and what not to.

At 10 my son became a self-taught developer, very good in 3 programming languages python , c++ and Lua . Yes this is great and every parent would want such an outstanding milestone. On the other hand, having a conversation with him would leave you with eyes wide open. The amount of information in his head good and bad was unbelievable. I am glad now they know, Monday - Friday no computers and during the weekend they know we access these for a specific time period.

Children are not eggs they won’t break. We have seen a lot of parents crying because of their children's outcome, we forget we spoilt them with technology and failed to get them to grasp the basics of life. Wake up, spread your bed, read your book, go out to play, wash the dishes, wash your underwear, make your porridge and tea, etc

Catch them young.

PARENTS TAKE NOTE.!

A teacher started checking homework done by her students. Her husband is strolling around with a smart phone playing his favorite game. When reading the last homework notes, the wife starts crying with silent tears. Her husband asked,

‘What happened?’

Wife: ‘Yesterday I gave homework to my students, to write something on the topic, 'MY WISH.’

Husband: ‘OK, but why are you crying?’

Wife: ‘While checking the last notes, it made me cry.’

Husband curiously: ‘What’s written in the notes that makes you cry?’

Wife: ‘LISTEN...
My wish is to become a smart phone. My parents love their smart phone very much. They care about their smart phone so much that sometimes they forget to care for me. When my father comes from the office tired, he has time for his smart phone but not for me. When my parents are doing some important work and smartphone is ringing, within single ring they attend the phone, but not to me... even if I am crying. They play games on their smartphones not with me. When they are talking to someone on their smartphone, they never listen to me even if I am telling them something important. So, MY WISH is to become a smartphone.’

After listening to the note the husband got emotional and asked his wife,

‘Who wrote this?’

Wife: ‘OUR SON.’

PEOPLE / PARENTS, remember, Gadgets are beneficial, but they are for our ease not to cease the love amongst family and loved ones. Children see and feel everything that happens with & around them. Things get imprinted on their mind with an everlasting effect. Let’s take due care, so that they do not grow with any false impressions.

To Those Without Degrees

Degree or no degree, we all need money. Did you know that a person with a degree can still hustle and use their professional qualification to do what you can't? You can be as smart as you want but without a degree you cannot become a professional lawyer, doctor, accountant, teacher, accredited professor. Do not be angry at those with degrees, we need them in our country.

To Those With Degrees

Your degree doesn't mean you are much better than those without a degree. Be humble, some people without degrees have more practical information and knowledge than you think, respect them.

A degree doesn't mean automatic money, you have to work. Some of the theories you were taught were just good for books. They are not as practical, open your mind. Think outside the box. Listen to others, even if they don't have qualifications.

HISTORY OF SOME SELECTED LUSAKA COMPOUNDS A MUST READ.

Once upon a time there was a large farm which was made up of what is now southern Lusaka, owned by a farmer John Laing, hence the compound by the same name.

He lived there with his wife and family. He had general workers who

lived on different parts of the farm, but some of his workers lived on the side where they were looking after chickens what is now known as "Kuku" compound or "Kwa Kuku". Along came a youngman,John Howard, whomarried Mr Laing's daughter.

John Laing gave John Howard a part of his farm to manage, now known by his name as well.

When Mr Laing died, his wife moved out of the house to live at a new site. The old home stead is now known as"Chibolya" compound, meaning abandoned place in Bemba

The new place where Mrs Laing moved to became known as "Kwa Mrs" or"Misisi"compound as we now know it today.

Before her death, Mrs Laing decided to give her faithful workers some of the land, this area is now known as "Chawama", to acknowledge the good deed done.

Kuomboka name came through the migration of 1976 flood in kanyama which made then president KK to relocate the people from kanyama to a place part of chawama (which is now called Kuomboka as a Lozi traditional ceremony, which was named by a late Mr Alexander Kapokola a Lozi man who was the chairman of the migrates from kanyama

Then kanyama was a big launch were a lot of animals where kept and some butchering used to take place hence the name Kanyama

This is a true story.
