Niger junta says ousted President Mohamed Bazoum tried to esca
Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown in a coup in July.

The military government in Niger says it has foiled an attempt by the deposed former President, Mohamed Bazoum, to escape from custody.

The former president attempted to flee in the night with his family, cooks and security, a military spokesman said.

There were plans for the group to fly out on helicopters but the plan was foiled, he added.

Mr Bazoum's lawyers have called for his immediate release, saying his detention is illegal.

He has been under house arrest along with his wife and son since members of his presidential guard staged a coup in late july.

The lawyers say the ousted president and his family can only be visited by a doctor who brings them food every other day, and on Friday morning even this was not allowed. They demanded proof that he was still alive.

Niger is part of the African region known as the Sahel - a belt of semi-arid land that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, just south of the Sahara Desert. The area is plagued by jihadists and beset by military regimes.

The attempted escape happened around 03:00 (02:00 GMT) on Thursday, military spokesman Amadou Abdramane said on state television.

"The ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and his family, his two cooks and two security elements, tried to escape from his place of detention," he said.

The escape bid failed and "the main actors and some of the accomplices" were arrested, he added.

*LCC IMPLORES RESIDENTS TO KEEP HOMES CLEAN TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF CHOLERA*

Lusaka City Council - LCC is calling on Lusaka residents to keep their homes and surroundings clean to prevent the spread of Cholera.

The Ministry of Health has so far confirmed one cholera-related death and 11 more cases have been recorded in Lusaka.

It is from this background that we urge members of the community to always practice high levels of hygiene in their homes and surroundings as this will help avert the disease.

As Lusaka City Council we remain committed to keeping the City of Lusaka clean, green, and healthy to ensure preventing all kinds of diseases that come with uncleanness.

Removing street vendors from the streets and maintaining drainages are some of the measures the Local Authority is trying so hard to implement as this will go a long way in keeping the city clean.

Members of the public are therefore called upon to complement these efforts for the benefit of everyone.

Lusaka City Council will, therefore, continue to collaborate with the Ministry of Health and members of the public to ensure the disease is contained.

NO NEED TO STIGMATIZE EACH OTHER- DR. BARIHUTA

UNAIDS Country Director Tharcisse Barihuta has observed that zero HIV and AIDS infections can only be attained if individuals desist from risk behaviour regardless of whether you are positive or not.

In an exclusive interview in Lusaka, Dr. Barihuta further says that each individual should evaluate themselves in terms of behaviour in order to avoid contracting the disease if living positively ensure you are on medication in order to prolong one's life.

He explains that HIV and AIDS is a disease just like any other hence no need to stigmatize one another adding that it's either you are affected or infected.

The UNAIDS Country Director has implored members of the public to take advantage of the readily available preventive measures being offered from various health facilities dotted across the county aimed at attaining zero new infections and zero deaths citing usage of Condoms, drugs such as PREP among others.

Dr. Barihuta has since called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders and increase massive sensetization in a bid to reduce stigma against people living with HIV and AIDS in society.

He stresses that there is need to have a mindset change towards people's perception towards HIV and AIDS and embrace each other if the fight is to be a success.

"If I am taking a risk as a person, I need to take preventive steps such as being tested and seek medication once tested positive as no one else can evaluate me".

The quiz will premiere on the public broadcaster, Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), starting on Wednesday, 18th October 2023, as a weekly programme.

Winners of the competition will walk away with K50,000.

The Authority believes that a well-informed and satisfied taxpayer is key to driving the organization’s vision to be a model of excellence in revenue administration and trade facilitation.

Police Post, Admin Offices and 432 Stands Mysteriously ‘Disappear’ in Kamwala Market…

AS COUNCILLOR SIMATAA CALLS ON GOVT TO CANCEL 65 YEAR LUBURMA MARKET LEASE CITING SERIOUS FUNDAMENTAL BREACHES OF CONTRACT
=======================================

Kamwala Ward councillor Hon. Mainda Simataa has called on government to speed-up cancellation of the 65 year lease agreement of 2001 where Lusaka City Council (LCC) gave China Henan the right to develop the market and recoup their investment in 65 years when the law only permits a maximum of 13 years.

The councillor was speaking following Local Government permanent secretary Nicholas Phiri’s tour of the market to verify reports that China Henan never fulfilled their obligation to build a police post, administration offices and 432 marketeer stands for the council, but only built their 121 shops where Zambians are allegedly over-charged for rentals!

“You’ve seen it for yourselves, the PS has seen it too, there’s no police post here, no offices, no stands. So as a council and a nation we were deceived and robbed, and now, we have every moral and legal right to take back what’s ours” said councillor Simataa.

A historic synagogue in Tunisia has been heavily damaged amid anti-Israel protests.

A video and images widely shared on social media showed hundreds of protesters setting fire to the synagogue in the central Tunisian city of Al Hammah.

It is said to have happened soon after the deadly blast in Gaza on Tuesday that killed hundreds of people, which has been blamed on Israel by most of the Arab world. Israel attributed it to a misfired rocket by a Palestinian militant group.

The synagogue, previously damaged in the 2011 Arab Spring protests, is not an active worship site. It houses the tomb of a 16th Century rabbi and was a historic pilgrimage site.

Constable Luyando Shonga got more than the attention she hoped for with her dancing videos on the popular social media platform, Tiktok when her bosses saw the videos of her dancing in police uniform.

In a letter to her boss at Liteta Central Police, the District Police Command has ordered that Constable Shango be charged with discreditable conduct under CAP 107 of the Zambia Police Act as well subject her to a tribunal.

The letter said the Tiktok dancing cop should immediately be moved from the traffic section to the enquiries office.

"The Central Police Command has observed with dismay the conduct of officer No. 47913 W/Constable Luyando Shonga of Liteta Police Station posting and circulating on Tiktok social media whilst in police uniform on 17/10/23. This conduct is discrediting the integrity of the Zambia Police Service as an institution and put its name in disrepute to the general populace," the letter read in part.

Further, the District Police Command said Shonga's removal from traffic section, charge and tribunal appearance should serve as warning to other police officers who may wish to emulate her.

ZAMBIA HOCKEY ON THE VERGE OF BEING FINED AND BANNED

Zambia Hockey Association (ZHA) is next week scheduled to participate in the men’s and women’s Olympic qualifiers in Pretoria, South Africa from October 29 to November 5.

The two teams have been training and working hard to make sure they make the nation proud by qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Equally on the other side, the Association Executive has been working around the clock to make the trip to South Africa a success by engaging the biggest stakeholder government.

After several meetings, the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Art indicated they would support accommodation while ZHA will handle transport, camping, purchasing of the competition kit and all other logistics which was a big relief.

However, the Ministry advised us they can only support transport, which has already been secured by the ZHA leaving the Association once more in distress.

Sadly there is no strategic intervention from the National Sports Council of Zambia over such important events like Olympic Qualifiers which should be the Ministry’s priority leading up to the Paris Games, we feel Sports Council is absent especially when we need them the most.

For the two teams (Men’s and Women’s) and officials for 11 days, the association is looking for K460,000 to cover costs associated with accommodation and food.

It will be disappointing for the country if the team fails to travel for the qualifiers after the association and the players put in a lot of work and effort.

We are making a distress call to the President of the Republic of Zambia and the corporate world to come to the aid of the two teams to help with covering the accommodation costs while they represent the country in the qualifiers of the Paris 2022 Olympics.

Failure to participate at the qualifiers will attract a fine of 5, 000 Euros per team which will be around K225, 000 and a possible two years ban.

KAWAMBWA DISTRICT COMMISSIONERS CALLS FOR STAKEHOLDER PARTICIPATION IN SUPPORTING GIRLS EDUCATION.

Kawambwa District Commissioner Godfrey Chilambwe has called for concerted efforts from stakeholders in the district in ensuring that girls remain in school and acquire the much needed education as they are vulnerable than boys for obvious reasons.

He says without education, girls are subjected to early marriages, teenage pregnancies and also prone to diseases like HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

Speaking during the Keeping Girls in School (KGS) symposium held at St. Marys girls secondary school, Mr. Chilambwe said the KGS project was in line with governments priority of ensuring that the girl child received receive education and contribute to national development.

He said the partnership between government and the World Bank was aimed at financing the implementation of girls education, increasing access to livelihood support for extremely poor rural women and improving access to secondary school education for disadvantaged girls in various parts of the districts in Luapula Province.

The District Commissioner added that the role of KGS in the welfare of the girl child needed to be supported by all stakeholders as it was the only way they could supplement government efforts of having many girls participate in decision making and building of better futures for themselves and their families.

Mr. Chilambwe disclosed that government remained committed to ensuring that girls acquire the much needed education through the construction of schools, ablution blocks with running water countrywide through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

And Kawambwa Town Council Secretary Isaac Mwale urged Gil's to focus on education as it had the power to enable traditional gender roles, advocate for their rights and contribute to a more equitable society.

Mr. Mwale said that education was an improvement tool to use.

UNITED PROSPEROUS AND PEACEFUL ZAMBIA CONGRATULATES GOVERNMENT ON MEALIE PRICE REDUCTION, BUT RAISES CONCERNS OVER ZNS DEAL

Lusaka, Zambia - October 14 2023 - The leader of United Prosperous And Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ), Charles Chanda, has congratulated the Zambian government on its efforts to reduce the price of mealie, which has been a source of concern for many Zambians. However, Chanda has raised concerns over the government's decision to use the Zambia National Service (ZNS) to deliver mealie only to ShopRite, which is located in a few provinces of the country.

"While we appreciate the government's efforts to bring the price of mealie down, we cannot help but wonder how the ZNS will deliver mealie to ShopRite only, which is in a few provinces in the country. This decision raises more questions than answers, and we are concerned about the implications of this move," said Chanda.

Chanda went on to say that the ZNS deal appears to be a case of a government that is not serious about addressing the root causes of the mealie price hikes in the country. He questioned why ShopRite, which is a supermarket chain owned by a multinational company, was chosen as the sole beneficiary of the ZNS deal.

"Zambia is a country of great potential, and we need a government that is serious about addressing the issues that are affecting our people. What we are seeing now is a government of jokers who are more interested in serving their own interests than those of the people they were elected to serve," Chanda added.

Chanda also called on the government to be transparent about the ZNS deal and to provide answers to the many questions that have been raised by the public.

"We call on the government to be transparent about this deal and to provide answers to the many questions that have been raised by the public. This is not the time for secrecy and cloak-and-dagger operations. The people of Zambia deserve to know the truth," Chanda concluded.
