REPORT TO DEC/ACC OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE:

The case of Corruption allegations by the "Watchman media" against the Copperbelt PS and DPS...

By Datacurates Correspondent.

Lusaka • 08/12/2022

A Copperbelt based UPND aligned media group which calls itself the "watchman" has of late made audacious but unfounded claims that the Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Mr Augustine Kasongo and his Deputy Mr Kamenga are corrupt.

None of us wishes to promote corruption, but to falsely claim the above UPND appointed government officials on the Copperbelt Province are corrupt is tantamount to causing confusion within the party.

Our findings on the above claim are as follows:

🔺 BLACK MOUNTAIN ACCUSATIONS:

After our follow ups on the accusations, datacurates has realised that the Copperbelt PS in particular in NOT a beneficiary of the Black Mountain.

Based on our understanding, the UPND have set up the perfect system of operations at the slug mountain that has proven to be the most efficient and effective since the times of the MMD.

If the "watchman" feel they have not benefited enough, the doors of the consortium leadership are always open for dialogue and any complaints can be made through the right channels instead of resorting to social media ranting and speculation.

Morever, Mr Ernest Lufunda, Wallen Hinyama and other consortium leaders do not deserve to be dragged in petty talks when their contacts and offices are always free to access.

🔺 LAND ACCUSATIONS:

The Copperbelt PS is one person we have found to have refused to break the law for the sake of benefiting a few party individuals.

If the "watchman media" expect the Provincial government leadership to break the law in order to benefit their selfish demands then they stand on killing the party.

OUR CHALLENGE TO EVERYONE:

We therefore challenge the "watchman media" and everyone else claiming to have any dirt on the Copperbelt Province government officials to take action by reporting them to DEC or ACC, if not then you should FOREVER hold your peace.

It does not serve the party well to always rush into claiming the leadership is corrupt everytime they refuse to sanction your illegal demands.

THE CHINGOLA AND CHILILABOMBWE PASTORS FELLOWSHIP ARE BASICALLY SPEAKING THE SAME LANGUAGE WITH THE CLERGY THAT WERE RECENTLY CALLING FOR VEDANTA'S RETURN.

By Alinuwila Singoyi

On 30th November 2022, twenty one (21) clergy men from Chingola and Chililabombwe held a press briefing in which they called for quick action on the KCM/Vedanta issue in the light of much suffering that the communities are undergoing.

The press statement issued by the Pastors fellowship of Chingola and Chililabombwe distancing themselves from the 21 clergymen isn't necessary because the said clergy men made it clear that those were their suggestions and not an official representation of the pastors fellowship.

Moreover, the Pastors fellowship have equally made it clear that given the circumstances surrounding KCM, it is best to focus on negotiating better conditions of operations by Vedanta than to leave the asset and affected communities collapsing.

The two groups are basically saying the same thing and that is what even us as community members are calling for.

Quick action on KCM, negotiate better conditions for the people, and save the Chililabombwe and Chingola from economic collapse.

'IMPLEMENTORS TEAM' IS PEDDLING LIES, WHOSE INTERESTS ARE THEY REPRESENTING?:

By Datacurates Correspondent

3rd December, 2022

On 26th October the 'implementors team' asserted that "PF aligned Civil Servants Reject Transfers." A claim they failed to prove especially on the Copperbelt as they linked the refusal of the said individuals to the lack of leadership by the provincial leadership.

Unfortunately, under the guise of fighting for the UPND Party, they have continued to mislead the nation by spreading more misinformation.

COPPERBELT ADMINISTRATION PAC APPEARANCE:

Datacurates closely followed the Friday PAC hearings that featured the Copperbelt Permanent Secretary and his administration.

Based on our findings, Facts of the matter are as follows:

◻️PAC did not send away the PS and his team but simply advised him to closely monitor the Heads of Department.

◻️The PS and his team responded to all the queries as put before them by the PAC with maximum clarity.

◻️The Copperbelt Aministration officers answered questions as expected.

◻️The Provincial Water officer was charged for her failure to supervise her Subordinates.

◻️The erring officer was further reported to the police for fraud.

◻️Erring officers appeared before the Disciplinary Committee for Questioning.

◻️The erring officer was ultimately suspended and recommended for summary dismissal to the Public Service Management Division (PSMD).

◻️PAC earlier requested the PS to present the Director Finance, Regional Coordinator for DMMU and the Provincial Water Development Officer before the committee so that they could answer to its queries which the PS did, how does the "Implementors team" expect him to answer on their behalf?

Whose Interest is the Implementors Team representing?

1. By castigating the Copperbelt PS for his commendable job of recreating the system so that the UPND party can function smoothly on the Copperbelt, whose interests are the implementors representing?

2. If the PS has facilitated for the dismissal of erring officers and yet the implementors continue to claim otherwise, whose interests are they representing?

3. If the implementors are really representing the interests of the public, why can't they appreciate the efforts that have been made so far to both transfer and bring to book all the erring officers?

Way Forward:

Media platforms claiming to be UPND aligned must decist from spreading misinformation and embrace the culture of researching properly before running around claims what isn't true or they risk getting discredited by the Public.

It is sad to witness the falling into bitterness and propaganda of the Implementors media team, perhaps they are now working for a Cheque.

The case of KCM Suppliers

The case of KCM Suppliers

WE ARE COMMITTED TO PAYING US$220 TO SUPPLIERS UPON RETURN OF FULL CONTROL OF KCM.

We have set aside US$220 million to dismantle outstanding debt to small and medium contractors in a bid to reduce liabilities and aid the growth of businesses.

As Vedanta, we remain committed to offsetting the liabilities. Understandably KCM through its Provisional Administrator has not paid the majority of creditors during the last three years resulting in a multi-fold increase in outstanding supplier and contractor liabilities. Vedanta is committed to paying KCM suppliers specifically small suppliers up to US$ 220 million which was due as of May 2019 when the provisional liquidator was appointed.
Vedanta is desirous that once it takes full control of KCM, it will ensure that Zambian small businesses are prioritized in its supply chain.

A procurement program will be put in place and will work hand in hand with all key stakeholders including the Association of Mine Suppliers and Contractors, in identifying Zambian small businesses and will avail them with support and medium-term contracts so that they can grow with KCM.

This will be included in a framework agreement that will be entered into between KCM, Vedanta, ZCCM IH, and the government. This agreement will be auditable on a bi-annual basis by an independent firm to verify all parties complying with their commitments under the framework agreement.

Meanwhile, we have noted with concern the fall in copper prices which have dropped below $7,500 a ton by last Wednesday as fears of a global economic slowdown piles pressure on industrial metals from record highs it recorded a few months ago. This development will bring economic stress to Zambia. The mineral Copper is an economic and social backbone of Zambia and mining is a critical sector of the economy of Zambia that contributes quite significantly to economic growth and a contributor to the GDP of the country.

Vedanta Resources remains resolute in playing a part in revitalizing Zambia’s economy in mine development of KCM, serving the community and workforce more responsibly through a structured program and through an independent trust to empower the youth and women among others.

We successfully operated KCM for 15 years and invested $ 3 billion which included $1.3 billion in sustaining CAPEX and $1.7 billion into project CAPEX.

This investment was funded through cash generated from KCM operations and $1.5 billion by way of a Vedanta shareholder loan to KCM and further makes a commitment to investing $1 Billion in KCM growth strategies that will include exploration and mine development, processing, and value addition to copper using both upstream and downstream linkages.

SHOULD THE SAME OLD PEOPLE CONTINUAL TO BENEFIT FROM THE BLACK MOUNTAIN?

By Kangwa Kamando ~ Copperbelt UPND Vice Chairperson Politics.

14/03/2022

Following the restructuring of the black mountain operations system by the mines and Copperbelt Province Minister,

a lot of people who were the only beneficiaries during the past regime have risen against the new system citing corruption and irregularities.

Facts of the matter:

▫️The previous beneficiaries of the Black mountain were a group of individuals who amassed extensive wealth while many other youths remained in the dark and in poverty.

These same people were hoping to retain authority and control over the black mountain even under the new dawn,

however, the mines Minister and Provincial Minister whom the old beneficiaries are now claiming are corrupt have put in place a working system that encompasses all community members.

▫️The current regime has established a system through which hundreds of cooperatives from across the entire province are guaranteed of benefiting from the resources.

Both youth and women cooperatives of all kinds are being incorporated into the consortium to ensure collective communal benefits.

▫️The assertion by some sectors of society, especially the former black mountain benefitiaries that, UPND youths and members are the only registered members of the consortium is fallacious and misleading.

🔔IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:

1. Should we have the same old companies continue benefiting from the black mountain? If they are eligible and willing to work under/and or with others, then there is no harm.

However, the newly established system of incorporating all Copperbelt Province youths and women, whether UPND, PF or non-partisan is a better approach towards sustainable youth and women Empowerment.

2. Are the Mines and Provincial Ministers conniving with Indian companies to sideline Zambian youths? Certainly not, any collaborations with various companies that the two ministers have facilitated so far have been in public domain for all to see and are simply to ensure maximum safety for Zambian people to prevent unnecessary accidents.

3. Are UPND youths part of the Consortium? They certainly are, just like hundreds of other youths from other political parties, and the general community. UPND youths who have yielded to the requirements of being part of the consortium are free to be incorporated for potential benefits.

4. Is propaganda helpful in resolving such matters? Unfortunately no, propaganda is a conduit for violence and confusion.

If any community or opposition political party members have any concerns on the operations, they should engage the relevant authorities who if needs be would rescind any decisions made so far.

5. Should the Mines Minister adopt and implement the same old system? Certainly not, the results of the previous system of operations proved disastrous in many ways than one. Fine tuning the current operations to international mining standards is what will maximize our benefits and guarantee our safety.

Note:

Now is time for all Zambians to benefit from national resources as opposed to a select few.

KABUSWE'S APPROACH TOWARDS SERVICE DELIVERY IN MINE SECTOR IS EXEMPLARY

By Chishala Mwamba

I HAVE lately taken keen interest in understanding the works and approach of Mines and Minerals Development Honorable Paul Kabuswe in relation to how his Predecessor handled the Ministry, the following is what I have established:

⭕SECTOR ASSESMENT

Most ministers tend to make a detrimental error of simply picking up from where their Predecessor left without getting to the ground on their own to establish personal facts.

This is a dangerous approach that has to the fall of many Ministers as such an approach does not grant them a wholistic and realistic view of the nature of their ministry due to high levels of misinformation.

As for Mr Kabuswe, he has taken an ardent interest in appreciating the potential of even such neglected minerals as Manganese and Tourmaline by visiting almost all the mining sites in the Country.

Such an approach is essential to realizing the full potential and benefits of the mining sector.

⭕POLICY BEFORE INVESTMENT

The biggest regret of the Zambians today is having had tolerated the unpatriotic Mining investment policies/conditions that the Chiluba regime instituted hugely to the benefit the foreign investors and unfortunately to the detriment of the Zambian people. This is a mistake no Zambian is willing to see repeated, and the Minister knows this.

Understanding our historical mistakes is cardinal in propelling us towards making the right choices, and that is what the Mines Minister has labored to do and his Ministry is now working on formulating policies that will stand to benefit Zambians more.

Like Peter Drucker once said, “Efficiency is doing the thing right. Effectiveness is doing the right thing.” Honorable Kabuswe is trying to do the right thing for the betterment of the Zambian people.

⭕THE PLIGHT OF MINERS

Under Hon. Kabuswe's Predecessor, a Miner was reduced from hero to zero. The miners safety was not priotised, unions were not listened to, investors had more power than the local people.

However, on more occasions than one, the current Minister of Mines has reiterated the need for the safety of the WORKERS to be priotised to an extent of halting certain mining activities. He is working closely with mine workers unions as we saw from the KCM tour and he is continually collaborating with stakeholders of all levels to ensure the plight of the miners is Championed.

I am extremely optimistic that the Minister will deliver beyond most people's expectations especially in bettering the lives of the miners and the general Zambian Citizenry.

⭕NO NEGLECT TO HIS CONSTITUENCY

As opposed to what was normally the norm in Chililabombwe Constituency where the previous MP would rarely visit the people.

Honorable Kabuswe as both Minister of Mines and Chililabombwe MP has made it a habit to be visiting his constuency nearly every week to appreciate the Challenges of his people,

Moreover, he is constantly working with his Mayor, DC and other District Stakeholders to ensure Sustainable Development through the implementation of the right projects in his Constituency.

Such is a leader worth emulating indeed.

Living dead Rose by the roadside, 70's.
==============================
A ghost story of Rosemary and mandalena in the 70's when Tudor Inn on the Ndola-Mufulira road was at its peak, their true identity or base was unknown because they appeared on different roadsides of the copperbelt however Rosemary and Mandalena were the mentioned names each time you encounter one.

Regardless of their beer chasing and good life habit, they had lovers at heart and the two couples got involved in separate road accidents but luckily their boyfriends survived & quickly continued the clubbing with other ladies, this was what angered Rose and mandalena's families behind as they felt the two were easily and quickly forgotten by their lovers so they magically invorked dead spirits at their graves to resurrect with anger & destroy men who drive and pick prostitutes by road sides, good Samaritans inclusive, any man involved should die in car accident that hour.

The ‘risen’ Rosemary & Mandalena was fair-skinned, bright-faced spirit who wore a reflective -red dress with big white spot to be noticed from a distance by motorists smiling & joyfully waving down the vehicle, her dress swinging along with the hand ,those who managed to escape unhurt testified that Rosemary was irresistible. some men stopped with intentions to go and sleep with her while Others were Good Samaritans who only wanted to help with a lift but As for Rosemary and Mandalena they didn't care , mission must be accomplished.

Rosemary smiled at the driver upon enterkng the car revealing her white, well-placed teeth and tells the driver to hit the pedal with a sweet voice and a bright smile again.

Just when the driver thought it was time to talk freely as they moved, His very first words made smiley Rosemary grin once more with few changes made, There was a big smile alright, but this time it was all 'toothless' with winking well drown eye blows .

RECLAIMING ZAMBIA'S SPORTS GLORY:
HEARTSON MABETA - THE MAN FOR THE JOB

My suggestion on the man that I believe can do it for Zambia's Sports Sector 🇿🇲 ...

It is unfortunate that the PFs poor leadership affected every sector, including Sport.

Can you imagine, under Mr Lungu's rule Zambia never qualified for Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) Football tournament? 🤦🏾‍♂️

But I believe that should come to an end Because Bally is here and as an ardent/sport oriented youth, I have a suggestion of a qualified man who can help Bally to deliver in this sector.

Heartson Mabeta who happens to be Kankoyo Constituency Member of Parliament elect is the solution.

Here is why:

1. He is a Banker/farmer who is extremely passionate about sports.

2. In trying to take sports to another level, he sponsors the following in his Constituency;

🔹Rugby
🔹Football
🔹Tennis
🔹Volleyball
🔹Golf
🔹Boxing and many more...

3. He is the Current Board Member of the Mufulira Rugby Club.

4. He is also Past Vice Chairperson for Mufulira Rugby Club.

5. He happens to be the Current Zambia Rugby Union Treasurer General.

6. The man has exposure in most sporting activities thereby making it possible for even minor sports to bloom.

I can not think of a youthful man better qualified to handle this ministry than Heartson Mabeta.

WILL WESTERN COUNTRIES TAKE OVER ZAMBIA'S ECONOMY UNDER BALLY?

Thoughts of Chishala Mwamba...

Following Ballys victory, there has been a significant amount of speculation by such social-media platforms as 'The Candidates' and people like 'Nakachinda', and other insignificant 'opposition party' voices as to how the western powers will now take over Zambias economy and loot our resources.

Truth be told, Zambia has been trading with both the West and the East since it's independence.

Trade with the East intensified when China rolled out a vicious resource mobilization plan, of which Africa happened to be fertile ground for trade in that regard.

Bally critics are confident that the China Zambia situation is what will return under UPND, except it will be with EUROPE/AMERICA this time around.

However, these Bally Critics are missing some important points.

1. The benefits derived from international trade are more dependent on how good you negotiate DEALS as a nation as opposed to WHO you are negotiating with.

For example, China is America's biggest trading partner, but America's economy is not controlled by China and vice-versa.

Moreover, countries like Rwanda have realized more benefits in trading with China and the West while Zambia has not because we did not have the marrow to negotiate effectively.

2. Zambia has little to show economically from the time it has spent with China in bed.

For those of you who do not know, the Chinese are able to do anything to get a contract and are highly compromised in terms of bribes.

Because of the Chinese, most PF guys became very rich while most Zambians continued getting poorer.

The Chinese then later turned to abusing workers in their work places without fear of the Authorities, simply because the Authorities had already gotten a lions share.

Keep in mind, most projects were OVERPRICED in collaboration with the Authorities.

3. Who will Zambia trade with?

Ceteris paribus (holding all things constant);

As always, Zambia will trade with the world, starting at regional level to global level.

Except this time around, Zambians stand to benefit more than before.

4. Will Zambia benefit from International Trade as opposed to being dominated?

Ceteris Paribus again;

Zambia currently has one of the most effective, smart and brilliant business negotiators as its president.

Given Ballys capabilities, Zambians can be optimistic that we shall seat on the negotiation table with the USA🇺🇸, CHINA 🇨🇳, ENGLAND 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, or whoever and negotiate to the benefit of the Zambian people.

Like Bally said, it will be a "win-win kind of trade" with the outside world.

Nakachinda who is MMD and other doom sayers should stop deceiving the Zambian people by assuming Zambia is about to lose its sovereignty to the West.

May God bless Zambia 🇿🇲

A GENTLEMAN WHO MADE K100,000 WHILE IN SCHOOL 👏🏾

Francis Mwamba a 2020 Mining Engineering graduate from Copperbelt University (CBU) shared a phenomenal story of how he rose as a single orphan to having a working capital of K100,000 while studying full time at CBU.

Upon graduating he is running a Branding and Money lending business that has made it possible for him to build his first house before he turning 26years old were he is now keeping the mother.

He shared that he is an ardent follower who has consumed all my content and that we first physically met in 2019 during The Africa Must Think Conference in Kitwe. I cognitively met him for the first time today as he was donating 10 copies of his debut book entitled 'MAKING YOUR FIRST K100,000' for the 'DUMI AND THE DUDES' program slated for tomorrow. Infact it was great to see some of my quotes in his book like "No one is given a good life or a bad life, you are just given life. It is up to you to make it good or bad"-DLN

We need more of such stories. My prayer is that we Zambians and indeed Africans keeping waking up from slumber of economic slavery and realize that the bright future begins with us.

Congratulations Francis 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Proud of you.

Adamson Mushala: as told by his wife

ONE day in December 1972, Adamson Mushala bundled his wife and five children, including a two-weeks-old baby, into a brand new Land Rover 109 station wagon and drove off from his home in Mufumbwe.

He had told his wife that they were going to attend a friend’s wedding in Mongu, Western Province, but they soon found themselves crossing the border into Angola.

That was Mushala’s escape out of the country to begin his armed rebellion against the Kaunda government that would last from 1976 to 1982.

Before he was finally killed by government soldiers, Mushala had morphed into an enigma who inspired both fear and admiration.

Thirty-six years after his death, his widow, Rejoice, remembers a smartly dressed gentleman with a beautiful smile.

On the wall of her living room hangs a black-and-white studio photo of her husband.

“He took that picture when we were in Angola,” she says calmly after noticing my curiosity as we sat in her living room.

Rejoice lives in a small settlement called Kivuku in Kasempa, North-Western Province.

Her house is just a few hundred metres from where she first met her husband – at Mukinge Mission School, back in the 1950s.

When Mushala completed his Standard Six Upper, he went to train as a game ranger, while Rejoice went to live in Chizela (now Mufumbwe), where she worked as a community school teacher.

It was here that the two former school-mates ran into each other again and fell in love.

Rejoice says she had a number of suitors before Mushala, including Emmanuel Mulemena, who later became a kalindula music maestro.

“There are many people who proposed to marry me, but I think God arranged for Adamson to be my husband,” she says, a slight glint in her eyes.
She adds: “I don’t know what attracted me to him. Of course he was tall and very smart. He really looked nice in his suits, but I think it was just God who brought us together.”

“I liked the way he walked and he had a beautiful smile. I also liked his complexion,” says Rejoice.

She still refers to Mushala as “my black-shine”.

In 1959, Mushala and Rejoice got married at Chizela Bible School in Mufumbwe.

According to Rejoice, the European missionaries at the Bible college had helped to sponsor and arrange the wedding.

“Many people came to witness our wedding because it was the first of its kind in Mufumbwe,” says Rejoice.

“It was a wonderful wedding held in Christian tradition,” she adds.

Rejoice describes her marriage as “wonderful”.
“He really loved me,” she says.

On January 16, 1960, the couple had their first child called Bert.
But by this time, Mushala had become completely disillusioned with the British colonial government.

“He was not happy with the white colonialists and he really wanted to join the fight for independence,” says Rejoice.

Shortly after, Mushala quit his job and joined the independence struggle.

Both Mushala and Rejoice had been actively involved in the fight for Zambia’s independence under the United National Independence Party (UNIP) led by Kenneth Kaunda.

In fact, Rejoice says she was present in 1961 when Julia Chikamoneka and other women protested topless in the capital against colonial rule.

Mushala, himself, was sent to organise party activities in North-Western Province.
“He was really involved in the fight,” says Rejoice.

A GIRL NAMED MAO

Then in 1962, at the height of the struggle for independence, Mushala and several young men were sent to China for training in guerrilla warfare.

Rejoice recalls seeing off her husband at the airport in Lusaka.
At the time, Rejoice was expecting the couple’s second child.

While in China, Mushala had met Mao Zedong, better known as Chairman Mao, who is the founding father of the People’s Republic of China.

Actually, there is a romantic story to their meeting.

When Chairman Mao learned that Mushala’s wife was expecting a child, he gave him a parcel for the baby, with a special request – to name the baby after him.

When Mushala returned home in 1963, Rejoice had given birth to a baby girl. Mushala named the girl “Mao”.

Rejoice says the parcel from Chairman Mao contained baby clothes and toys.

When the country attained independence on October 24, 1964, Mushala was living in Kamwala, Lusaka.
Rejoice remembers the day clearly.

“We all wore suits and went to celebrate,” she says.

But for Mushala, that celebration was short-lived. He was soon discontented with the Kaunda government.
He was particularly unhappy for being passed for appointments.

Mushala wanted to be in charge of wildlife.
Rejoice thinks people close to Kaunda had warned him against appointing her husband to head the department of wildlife, saying he would use the position to rise against government.

“But he just loved the job of a game ranger, his plan was not to turn against Kaunda,” says Rejoice.

When he could not bear his frustrations any longer, Mushala turned his back on Kaunda and UNIP and got involved with a new opposition party called United Party led by Nalumino Mundia.

But his activities would soon get him into trouble, and he ended up spending months in detention in Chinsali.

Rejoice says she was never told where her husband was during that period, and she herself had been placed under house arrest in Mufumbwe.

According to Rejoice, when Mushala came back, he was bitter, and started having clandestine meetings with some people.
“He never shared his plans with me.

Whenever I asked him, he used to tell me that women are not supposed to know everything that a man was doing,” she says.

In December 1972, the country was declared a one-party state.
Rejoice says Mushala hated the one-party state.

“He used to say to me ‘why should a man stand against a frog, does it mean a frog represents us the people?’” she recalls.
Under the one-party state, citizens only had two options on the ballot – YES or NO, Kaunda or a frog.

A REBEL IS BORN

One of Mushala’s close friends at the time was Mulondwe Muzungu.

According to Mr Muzungu, in December 1972, shortly following the declaration of one-party state, Mushala had walked into his office on Cairo Road to pay his premium on his life insurance policy under the Old Mutual financial company.

Mr Muzungu remembers one
remarkable detail about his friend that day – he was driving a brand new Land Rover 109 station wagon.

“It must have been grey or beige,” he says.
But it is the words that Mushala said to him as he walked out of his office that struck him most.

“As he was going, he said to me, ‘look after my children, for you will not see me, except on incarnation’. I did not understand those words, so I just laughed,” says Mr Muzungu.

The next time he would hear of his friend was on January 11, 1973.

“At lunch time, there was a news bulletin on Radio Zambia to the effect that William Chipango, Chrispin Mwendabai and magistrate Mwanamwale had been arrested in the Sesheke area, allegedly for ferrying people across the Zambezi into South-West Africa (Namibia) for military training, and that Adamson Mushala had fled the country,” he says.

But before then, Rejoice recalls that when her husband returned to Mufumbwe from Lusaka, he asked her to accompany him to a friend’s wedding in Mongu.

According to Rejoice, Mushala had tried many times before to persuade her to travel abroad with him, but she always refused.
This time, however, he was more persuasive.

“He insisted that we go together because his friend wanted to meet me,” she says.
But Rejoice was still recovering after delivering her fifth child.

“I told him I could not go on a long trip because my baby was just about two weeks old, but he insisted. He told me we would use a shortcut through Kabompo and that he would drive carefully,” she recalls.

Rejoice finally gave in, and around 16:00 hours on that day in December 1972, after saying goodbye to relatives, the family got on the Land Rover and headed westwards, making a stopover in Manyinga district for a week.
Later, on the way, Rejoice noticed soldiers in strange uniform.

“I asked my husband why there were many soldiers,” she says.

That is when Mushala explained that they were actually headed for Luanda, the capital of Angola.

“I didn’t know we were going to Angola,” says Rejoice. “He never shared his plans with me. You know how secretive men can be.”

The family passed through Makondo, Calunda and spent two weeks in Kazombo, before reaching Luanda.

When they arrived in Luanda, Mushala explained his plan to his wife.

“He told me that he was now going to fight against the one-party system,” she says.
Rejoice says while in Luanda, Mushala would usually go away for long periods from home.

“He used to fly from Luanda and go and meet his friends. I don’t know where they used to meet from, but I suspect they used to meet in South Africa,” she says.

After staying in Luanda for three years, Mushala moved his family to South Africa.

And in 1976 – Rejoice does not remember the exact date or month – Mushala said goodbye to his wife and headed back to Zambia.

“He told me if I was not afraid I could return to Zambia, but he also warned me that the authorities would either arrest me or kill me,” she recalls.
That was the last time Rejoice saw her husband, or ever heard from him.

“I remained like a widow,” says Rejoice, who was by this time training to become a doctor.

She says from then onwards, the whites who were taking care of her and her family would regularly update her about her husband and assure her he was okay.

“The whites who kept us used to give us updates about my husband. They would tell me where he was operating from and they told me he was safe,” she says.

But in November 1979, Rejoice decided to return to Zambia.
When I ask why she decided to return, she responds: “Why would I not return to my own country?”

She and her children, plus two other families, were driven to the border between Angola and Namibia by South African soldiers.

They then had to walk through the bush towards Zambia.

“We ran out of food and we had to depend on wild fruits,” she says.

After days, they arrived in Shangombo, which lies on the Namibian border in Western Province, and handed themselves to police.
“I introduced myself as Mrs Mushala. The officer-in-charge was really surprised,” she says.

According to Rejoice, the government wanted to send a plane to pick them up, but she refused.

“I refused to use a plane because there were other freedom fighters’ wives and I didn’t want to leave them behind.”

Later, they were driven to Senanga before being taken to Lilayi, where they were detained for about two months.

In January 1980, she was detained at Lilayi before being taken to Kawambwa and placed under house arrest.

While in detention, she repeatedly wrote letters to Dr Kaunda begging him to release her and the other detainees.

MUSHALA IS DEAD

According to Rejoice, on Sunday, November 27, 1982, around 09:00 hours, a man came hurriedly to the detention house and threw a copy of a newspaper inside.
“Mrs Mushala, look at this newspaper,” the man said.

“I got the newspaper and read that Mushala had been killed and that his body had been transported to Solwezi,” says Rejoice.
Rejoice says Mushala had appeared to her in a dream the previous night to say goodbye to her.

“He told me, ‘my wife, I’m gone now remain in peace, may God keep you till you grow old’.”

She says one of her children had heard her talking to someone in the night, and had asked her who she was talking to in the morning.

“I told him your father came and he was saying goodbye to me,” she says.

Rejoice said initially she was told she would be allowed to attend her husband’s burial. Then she was told the body would be transported to Lusaka.
But finally she was told she could not travel to Solwezi for security reasons.
“When they told me that, I collapsed, they had to rush me to hospital,” she says.

Rejoice and two other women would remain in detention two years after Mushala’s death.
The women protested their detention with a hunger strike, which seemed to have gotten the attention of the authorities.

Rejoice says she finally got a chance to talk to Kaunda via phone when she was in Mansa.

“I spoke to Kaunda on the phone when I was in detention in Mansa in 1984,” she says.
She says Dr Kaunda told her that she was now free.

“That was the first time I spoke to Kaunda, and that was the last,” she says.

Rejoice says President Kaunda did not want her to return to Mufumbwe, but to settle in Lusaka.
Rejoice refused and returned to Mufumbwe.

“I didn’t want people to think that I was working with the government against my husband.”
