32 GRADUATE IN TAILORING AND DESIGN IN CHIRUNDU DISTRICT

Chirundu Town Council Chairperson, Nevers Muchindu has called for the inclusion of more skills programmes at the Chirundu Skills Training Centre in order to ease access of skills development in Chirundu District.

Mr Muchindu said the inclusion of more courses to be added to the training centre will help promote skills development opportunities associated with the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in Chirundu.

The Chairperson said it will be easier to enrol students that apply for CDF skills development if more courses are to be added.

CHIRUNDU OPENS FIRST EVER EYE CLINIC

Chirundu District has officially launched its first ever eye clinic financially supported by One Sight Foundation amounting to K2 million in order to deliver quality eye care.

Minister of Health Sylvia Masebo in a speech read on her behalf by Ministry Permanent Secretary Technical Services, Kennedy Lishimpi said Government is working towards easy access to eye care for all Zambians as 80 percent blindness in the country is avoidable and preventable.

Ms Masebo said Government has put in place a National Eye Health Strategy to guide with planning, delivery, management and implementation of quality eye health services at all levels.

Speaking during the handover of the Eye Clinic to Mtendere Mission General Hospital Minister said the National Eye Health Strategy is aimed at reducing avoidable blindness in Zambia through the provision of cost effective and quality eye health services.

She said the opening of the eye clinic is in line with Government's agenda of taking health services closer to communities.

Speaking at the same event Mtendere Mission General Hospital Director, Hippolyte Manirakiza said the support being rendered by One Sight Foundation will enable the hospital offer comprehensive eye care and treatment in Chirundu and surrounding areas.

Mr Manirakiza hailed the foundation for the gesture as the eye clinic as this will reduce referrals of eye health care.

And One Sight Foundation Country Director, Phales Samboko said more than 15 million Zambians access eye care services and that the foundation is deligently working to take eye care health closer to communities.

Ms Samboko said the foundation is working with the Government through the Ministry of Health in order to enhance eye care services by establishing eye clinics at short distances.

Chirundu Town Council Chairperson, Nevers Muchindu the opening of the eye clinic was well timed as many people living in Chirundu were accessing eye care from Siavonga and Lusaka.

Mr Muchindu expressed gratitude towards One Sight for considering Chirundu to be one of the more than 50 eye clinics being done by the foundation.

Chirundu District Commissioner, Patrick Kasambila said the gesture by One Sight is in line with President Hakainde Hichilema's desire to transform health care delivery services that focus on prevention as a measure.

Mr Kasambila said the eye clinic is essential to meeting eye care and treatment for Chirundu residents.

SIAVONGA TRAGEDY: FOUR CHILDREN DIE AFTER CASSAVA CONSUMPTION.

October 27, 2023 - Police are investigating an incident in which four children died in unclear circumstances in Siavonga District.

Three of them are from one family except one identified as Onetty Manyepa aged three who was from the neighbourhood in the same village.

The other children were identified as Abigail Chalika aged two, Stephane Maocha and Celina Moonga both aged four all of Butete village, Chief Simamba in Siavonga District.

They were all pronounced dead upon arrival at Siavonga District Hospital.

Preliminary Police investigations indicate that on October 26, 2023 between 10:00 hours and 11:00 hours, the children were given cassava by the grandmother of one of the children identified as Eunice Manyepa aged 48 of the same village.

It is alleged that she equally ate the cassava together with other family members.

Police officers were informed that around 15:00 hours, the four children started vomiting and were taken to Nabutezi Clinic where their condition was said to be not stable.

They were rushed to Siavonga District Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The bodies were deposited in the same Hospital mortuary waiting for postmortem.

Police suspect foul play.

FIVE DIE IN CHIRUNDU:

Five people among them a two-month-old baby have died along the Chirundu-Kafue road after the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a truck.

A sixth person who happens to be the driver of the truck has survived with injuries and is admitted to the hospital
Investigations indicate that the vehicle, a Toyota Corolla failed to keep to its near side and collided with an oncoming Scania truck and trailer.

Police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale said the incident occurred today around 04:45 hours along Chirundu-Kafue road.
"Five people died while one survived with injuries in a Road Traffic Accident which occured in Chirundu District

The accident involving a Toyota Corolla and a Scania Truck and Trailer happened around 04:45 hours at a place called Edwards Truck Park area along Chirundu- Kafue road," he said.

Mr Mwale said the deceased person's include the driver of the Toyota Corolla identified as Chikuni Gwantula aged 37 ,together with four passengers including a two-month old baby.

He said the five sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Mtendere Mission Hospital.
"The other four deceased person's were identified as Fridah Kawila aged 40, Labani Kadakwa aged 32, Precious Hamasukwa aged 16 and Nelia Mwewa aged two months all of Chirundu District," he said.
Mr Mwale said the driver of the Scania and trailer bearing registration KN 67 KWS GPand LH 36 KV GP escaped with injuries and was rushed to hospital.

He added that investigations indicate that the driver of the Corolla bearing registration number ABR 4687 failed to keep to his near-side and collided with the oncoming Truck.

STOP SHARING CDF MONEY FOR PERSONAL USE, ESTABLISH SUSTAINABLE BUSINESSES

Chirundu Town Council CTC Chairperson, Nevers Muchindu has challenged youth clubs benefiting from the Constituency Development Fund CDF in Chirundu to take a leaf from women clubs that have success stories following acquisition of grants.

Mr Muchindu highlighted that women groups that have accessed CDF grants so far have come up with impressive sustainable sources of income compared with the youth groups.

The Council Chairperson stressed that grant beneficiaries need to put in their full potential adding that President Hakainde Hichilema wanted them to succeed in order to end poverty.

The Chairperson made these remarks during an orientation for CDF grant beneficiaries for the year 2023 in Chirundu District.
CTC Council Secretary, Embassy Cheembo expressed concern over the poor utilisation of CDF grants by most youth groups.

Mr Cheembo encouraged the youth to embrace the opportunities government is providing through CDF as it might not be the case in the near future.

He commended women groups for coming up with successful business plans which have positively impacted the female folk in the district.

Constituency Development Fund Committee CDFC Chairperson for Chirundu, Robson Sianduba was pleased about the increased number of grant beneficiaries from 96 groups last year to 117 beneficiaries this year.

Mr Sianduba has urged all grant beneficiaries to use the resources for intended purposes.

Makoka Women's Club Chairlady, Georgina Cholesha called on more women and young people in Chirundu to apply for grants as CDF is changing lives.
