ONLY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL SHOULD WORK IN MEDICAL LABS- BMSZ
By staff reporter
The Biomedical Society of Zambia (BMSZ) says there is need to strengthen laws and regulations that govern the medical laboratory in the country.
BMSZ president Mutale Mubanga notes that a strong regulatory framework that takes into account national and international laboratory standards ensures patient safety and protects the public from unethical lab practices.
"We need to strengthen laws and regulations that govern the lab because we do not want unqualified health care personnel working in the laboratory sector. We need to ensure that people working in the lab are appropriately trained," he said this at a BMSZ workshop.
Mr Mubanga further observed that some labs do not meet the standard of the medical laboratory hence the need for more strengthening.
He expressed worry to note that some labs have been operating without certification and accreditation thereby putting patients lives at risk because all tests done need to pass all quality checks.
And Mr Mubanga disclosed that to achieve its goal, BSMZ has been working with the HPCZ and the Ministry of Health to ensure that only qualified personnel work in the medical labs.
