Many hair relaxers contain a group of chemicals called phthalates, which can disrupt the endocrine system and lead to diseases of the reproductive system such as uterine cancer and uterine fibroids.

Chemicals known as phthalates, found in soaps, shampoos, hairsprays and a variety of other consumer goods, can cause uterine fibroids, a new study shows. While it can be hard to avoid phthalate exposure, there are some precautions that can minimize the risk.

Current research suggests that a history of stress and depression increases your risk for heavy menstrual bleeding. Plus, stress may be associated with an increased fibroid risk.
Also, research now suggests that Vitamin D deficiency could increase your risk for fibroids.

Do fibroids affect you mentally?
Fibroids can also affect your mental health.
You're likely to feel down, irritated, or grumpy. In fact, a 2022 study on women with fibroids showed that they were at a greater risk of developing depression or anxiety.

What organ is affected by fibroids?
Fibroids can be connected to the uterus through a stalk (pedunculated) or can be attached to nearby organs such as the bladder and bowel, or to the ligaments surrounding the uterus. Fibroids are rarely found outside the pelvic cavity.

What emotions are related to fibroids?
The emotional response to painful uterine fibroids can include everything from fear and anxiety to stress, anger, sadness, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, and even depression.

What foods are high in phthalates?
Cheeseburgers, chicken burritos and other meat products had the highest phthalate/plasticizer content, with much higher DEHT levels detected in burritos than in burgers. On the upside, cheese pizzas were among the least contaminated foods, while French fries were found to be DEHT-free.
