*Plea for Second Selection List: Mulungushi University Students Urge HELSB for Fair Opportunity*

Mulungushi Tv , 19th sept 2023 - The Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board (HELSB) recently announced the awarding of loans to 1,403 eligible first-year students at Mulungushi University for the just commenced 2023/2024 academic year. While this news brings joy to the successful applicants, it has also sparked concerns among those who were left out.

HELSB revealed that they received a staggering 4,496 applications for sponsorship at Mulungushi University, out of which 4,296 applicants were deemed eligible. Unfortunately, this represents only about 32.7% of the total eligible applicants, leaving a significant number of hopeful students disappointed and worried about their future.

Among those expressing their concerns is Kamfwa Kabwe, a student activist at Mulungushi University. Kabwe highlighted the harsh reality faced by many students who were left out, emphasizing that a significant portion of them hails from very poor and vulnerable families. Enrolling on self-sponsorship, given their precarious financial situations, seems almost impossible for these students.

The student activist warned that the lack of financial support could potentially lead to a high dropout rate for those who were not selected. Recognizing the crucial role education plays in breaking the cycle of poverty, Kabwe has passionately appealed to HELSB to reconsider and create a second selection list.

A plea for fairness and equal opportunities resonates within Kabwe's appeal. Urging HELSB to take into account the circumstances faced by the excluded students, Kabwe highlighted the need for creating a level playing field for all applicants. The call for a second selection list aims to provide a lifeline to those who are at risk of having their dreams shattered due to their financial constraints.

HELSB, as the governing body responsible for ensuring access to higher education and scholarship opportunities, should consider these concerns seriously. The impact of their decision reaches far beyond individual students, affecting the socio-economic fabric of the nation as a whole.

As the affected students continue to voice their hopes for a favorable outcome, it remains to be seen how HELSB will respond to their plea. The demand for a more comprehensive selection process that prioritizes inclusivity and support for financially disadvantaged students resonates strongly in this situation.

In the quest to bridge the gap between eligibility and opportunity, it is crucial that the aspirations and futures of these students are not ignored. The nation eagerly awaits HELSB's decision and hopes for a resolution that will provide a fair chance for all deserving students at Mulungushi University.

Violent Protests Erupt at UNZA Over Election Cancellation and Subsequent Looting

Lusaka, September 18th - Chaos engulfed the University of Zambia (UNZA) today as students vented their anger and frustration over the recent cancellation of student elections. In a shocking turn of events, the protests escalated to looting, with the UNZA Spar becoming a target for the students' outrage.

The cancellation of the elections due to the university's financial constraints had already sparked unrest among the student body earlier in the day. However, as tensions escalated, a group of students resorted to destructive behavior, leading to the looting of the UNZA Spar, a popular convenience store on campus.

What began as a peaceful demonstration soon spiraled out of control when a small fraction of the protesting students resorted to vandalism and theft. The looting at the UNZA Spar saw the store's shelves ransacked and several items pilfered.

The university management, already under fire for canceling the elections, swiftly condemned the violent actions and appealed for calm. They stated that acts of violence and looting were not in line with the principles of peaceful protest and democratic expression.

"There are more appropriate ways to express your discontent and frustration. Resorting to violence and theft undermines the integrity of the students' cause," said a university spokesperson. They further emphasized that the students' concerns were being taken seriously and efforts were underway to address the situation.

Local authorities were alerted about the situation, and the police were dispatched to the UNZA campus to restore order and ensure the safety of all students and staff. Additional security measures have been put in place to prevent any further acts of violence or vandalism from taking place.

The looting of the UNZA Spar has drawn criticism from various quarters, including student organizations and civil society groups, who condemned the violence and emphasized the need for peaceful protest. They urged the students to express their grievances through constructive dialogue, rather than resorting to such destructive actions.

The incident has cast a dark cloud over UNZA, tarnishing its reputation as a center of academic excellence and student activism. The actions of a few should not overshadow the genuine concerns raised by the student body regarding the cancellation of the elections, which has also led to a sense of disillusionment among the students.

University management, alongside higher education authorities, will have to address the multiple issues that have arisen from this unfortunate incident. Rebuilding trust, engaging in meaningful dialogue, and finding alternative solutions to ensure student representation and democratic processes are upheld will be crucial in the days ahead.

As the situation unfolds, the hope remains that calm and rationality will prevail, allowing for a resolution that considers the students' concerns while fostering an environment of peaceful coexistence and democratic participation within the university community....
