POLICE CONDEMN MOB JUSTICE AND DESTRUCTION OF PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE

January 14, 2025

The Zambia Police Service strongly condemns incidents of mob justice and the destruction of public infrastructure.

Such acts undermine the rule of law, disrupt public safety, and put innocent lives at risk. Public infrastructure, including police posts, is established to serve and protect communities, and its destruction hampers our ability to provide timely services, leaving citizens vulnerable to criminal activities.

We remind the public that taking the law into their own hands is not only illegal but also counterproductive. Justice can only be effectively administered through established legal channels.

CASE OF MURDER -MUNUNGA POLICE POST

We wish to inform the public of a tragic incident reported on January 13, 2025 at Mununga Police Post under Chienge Police Station.

At around 09:00 hours, F/Given Mumba, aged 40, of Chiseketi Village, Chief Mununga, District Chienge, reported her niece, Grace Kaoma, aged 44, of Kapampale Village, missing since 06:00 hours on January 12, 2025.While the family was searching, they received a call from Ms. Kaoma’s former husband, Derrick Mwale, stating that she was dead and buried near her farming field. Upon receiving this alarming report, police rushed to the scene and confirmed the incident.

The deceased was found buried in a bush, with a hoe discovered nearby. A physical inspection revealed injuries, including bleeding from the mouth and nose, bruises on her right hand, and a swollen face, suggesting she may have been assaulted with an unknown object.

Brief facts reveal that Grace Kaoma had been receiving threats from her former husband, Derrick Mwale, following their divorce. Police investigations led to the apprehension of the suspect at 23:00 hours yesterday January 13, 2025, and he was detained at Mununga Police Post.

2024 has been a year of both highs and unimaginable lows for me. It’s with a heavy heart that I share this deeply personal news: in December, I experienced the devastating loss of my baby during birth.

I’ve been keeping this journey private, but I feel it’s time to share with my Facebook family, friends, and those close to me. While this is a pain I wouldn’t wish on anyone, I’ve found strength in my faith, loved ones, and the memories I’ll always cherish of my little angel.

LCC SEIZES ASSORTED FOOD ITEMS AND ALCOHOL.

The Lusaka City Council has seized assorted food products and alcohol worth over K230,000 for being unfit for human consumption.

This move comes as part of an ongoing effort to enforce the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019 and the Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2011.

The operation was conducted between December, 2024 and January 2025 from Wholesales, Super Markets, Bars and Liquor Stores within the city.

The confiscated products were found to have violated several health and safety regulations.

These included the sale of expired goods, poor labelling practices, and compromised packaging such as dented or bulging containers, Poor Storage and Handling Conditions, Counterfeit or Smuggled Goods among other additional violations.

This is an on-going exercise and LCC is there to protect the public and we will continue to seize any products which are not complying with the food safety and Alcohol handling Act.

We therefore, urge the public to purchase food from reputable establishments and to report any food-related complaints to the Department of Public Health or through the public relations office.

ZNS READY FOR VOLUNTARY NATIONAL SERVICE TRAINING

The Zambia National Service (ZNS) has declared its readiness to commence the Voluntary National Service Training program with renovations, construction, and rehabilitation of the three designated training units reaching 75 percent completion.

ZNS Chief of Public Relations and Liaison, Brigadier General Mulenga-Nyone said the upcoming voluntary training program will be conducted in three units namely, ZNS Chiwoko in Katete, Chishimba in Kasama, and Kitwe Training School on the Copperbelt.

Speaking to Journalists shortly after the Commander’s inspection, Brig Gen Nyone said over 1,000 volunteers are earmarked be trained in the first intake which is scheduled to commence within the month.

She disclosed that the recruitment process for the program will be managed by the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services at Provincial level.

"We are currently at Chiwoko Training School, one of the designated Units for the upcoming Voluntary National Service program, which is set to commence soon. The Commander visited to assess the unit's state of readiness. So far, we are approximately 75 percent complete with renovations, construction, and rehabilitation of this facility with the status quo being the same with the other two Units," she said.

Brig Gen Nyone said the program once implemented will run consecutively for six months, with the second intake commencing training immediately after the first volunteers’ graduates.

She said volunteers who will qualify for the programme will be trained in life sustaining skills such as carpentry, plumbing, mechanics among others and agriculture as a compulsory course.
