Desperate Desire for Motherhood Lands Lusaka Woman in Jail for Child Theft
A 22-year-old woman from Lusaka’s Shantumbu area has been sentenced to three months in prison after admitting to stealing her neighbor’s four-month-old baby. The emotional case has drawn widespread attention, shedding light on the psychological toll of infertility and the extreme lengths some go to in their quest for motherhood.
Grace Banda, clad in red and visibly emotional, was led to a holding cell on Wednesday following her sentencing by Lusaka magistrate Mutinta Mwenya. In her defense, Banda explained she was driven by desperation to have a child of her own. "I have been struggling a lot with being childless," she admitted tearfully.
Banda's act of stealing the male infant could have resulted in a much harsher penalty, as child theft carries a maximum sentence of 14 years under Zambian law. However, Magistrate Mwenya took into account her emotional state and personal struggles, imposing a lenient three-month sentence and ordering mandatory counseling at Chainama Hills Hospital.
“This is a sad situation,” Magistrate Mwenya said during sentencing. “While the court acknowledges the pain of being childless, stealing another person’s baby is not the answer.”
Banda’s life story adds another layer of complexity to the case. Originally from Chipata, she moved to Lusaka in search of better opportunities. She eventually got married, but her husband, who resides in Chilenje, was reportedly unaware of her actions—or even her current whereabouts. Alone in court, Banda sobbed as she revealed her struggles, including an ailing mother and the lack of a support system in Lusaka.
Outside the courtroom, Banda told the Daily Mail that she never intended to harm the child but was overwhelmed by her longing to be a mother. Her actions, she admitted, were born of frustration and hopelessness.
The case has sparked a wave of public debate about the societal pressures women face regarding

Four Men Arrested for Bathing at Lusaka Roundabout Amid Scorching Heatwave
Lusaka, Zambia – In an unusual turn of events, police this morning arrested and detained four men after they were caught bathing at a roundabout opposite the High Court grounds in the capital city.
The incident, which occurred at dawn, drew the attention of passersby and sparked debate about the lack of accessible public amenities during the ongoing heatwave. Zambia has been experiencing record-high temperatures with minimal rainfall, creating discomfort for many residents, particularly those in urban areas where public pools or cooling facilities are scarce.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the four men using buckets of water to bathe openly in the roundabout. Police officers patrolling the area quickly intervened, arresting the individuals on grounds of public indecency and causing potential traffic disruptions.
“This is a sign of desperation brought on by the heatwave,” said a bystander, who chose to remain anonymous. “It’s unfortunate, but it also speaks to the need for better infrastructure to help people cope with extreme weather conditions.”
The arrested men are currently in police custody, pending further investigations. Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the matter, but sources indicate that charges could include public nuisance and unlawful occupation of public property.
Lusaka residents have expressed mixed reactions to the arrests. While some condemned the actions of the men as inappropriate, others empathized with their plight, highlighting the broader issue of climate change and the government’s role in providing safe and accessible facilities during extreme weather conditions.
“This should be a wake-up call for city planners to create more spaces where people can cool off during heatwaves,” said environmental activist Chanda Mwansa.
As Zambia continues to grapple with rising temperatures and limited rainfall, experts warn that such in
