Leaf loss due to downy mildew is something each farmer should worry about. It affects the fruit quality(testa, sweetness and size) and reduces the plant hardiness and growth. Downy mildew, if not controlled, is a serious disease that can cause massive damage to your entire vineyard.
Signs and Symptoms of Downy Mildew
Depend on the variety of grapevine it affects. Generally, the fungus attacks all the green parts of the vines. The affected leaves experience a dense growth of spores, loss of chlorophyll, and wilt. The lesions become yellowish while infected shoot tips thicken, curl, turn whitish, and eventually die. Symptoms and turn brown, dry up, and drop. Young grape berries are more prone to downy mildew.
Prevention and Management of Downy Mildew
The management strategies employed vary depending on the stage of infection. There are three phases that should be considered in the control of downy mildew which are:

To prevent the disease, farmers need to employ measures such as ensuring effective soil drainage, minimizing water splashing when irrigating the plants, and spraying the vines with fungicides. Other measures you should adopt to manage downy mildew are:

-Keep your vineyard clean
Management
Here are some tips on how to manage downy mildew in grapevines:
Keep an eye on temperatures. Downy mildew is more common in warm, humid conditions with moderate temperatures.
Rethink your irrigation system. If you are using sprinklers, irrigate your plants in the morning to provide enough time for the water on the leaves to dry. Alternatively, use drip irrigation systems as they are more effective and minimize splashing water on the leaves.
Spray the plants. Ensure that you spray your grapevines with the specified amount of sulfur-based fungicides. This will help combat fungal growth.
