MINISTER of Education Douglas Syakalima has urged provincial and district education officers including head teachers to be just and fair when handling teachers because they are human beings with feelings.

This was in response to National Union of Public and Private Educators of Zambia (NUPPEZ) president Victor Muyumba, who disclosed that some supervisors were treating teachers like their farm workers.

During commemorations of this year’s World Teachers’ Day under the theme ‘Valuing Teachers’ Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education’ yesterday, Mr Syakalima said the issue raised by the unions was disturbing.

“What the unions have said is disturbing,” he said.

“And I am directing provincial and district education officers and other supervisors to be humane and just, and treat teachers and other juniors fairly.

“What you don’t understand is that these people [teachers] are human beings and have feelings as well.”
