Luapula MPs and Lawyer Arrested in Electoral Violations Case
The Luapula Police Command has arrested Jean Chisenga, Member of Parliament for Mambilima Constituency, Lusaka-based lawyer Celestine Mukandila, and Leevan Chibombwe, MP for Bahati Constituency, in a case that has drawn significant public attention. The trio faces multiple charges, including obstruction of electoral officers and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.

According to Luapula Police Commanding Officer Mwala Yuyi, the arrests are linked to incidents during the filing of nominations for the Kawambwa Central parliamentary by-election on November 21. Chisenga and Mukandila are accused of obstructing electoral officers, a violation of Section 891, Subsection 35 of the Electoral Process Act of 2016. Additionally, they have been charged under Section 178(f) of the Penal Code for behavior likely to disrupt public peace.

Meanwhile, MP Leevan Chibombwe faces separate charges of acts intended to cause grievous harm, contrary to Section 224 of Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia. He is alleged to have intentionally injured a female police officer during the Pambashe constituency by-election in Kawambwa.

The Kawambwa Central by-election has been marred by tension, with reports of clashes between supporters of rival political parties. The arrests highlight growing concerns over electoral violence and the need for stricter enforcement of laws governing the electoral process.

All three individuals are currently detained at the Kawambwa Central Police Station and are expected to appear in court soon. The arrests have sparked mixed reactions, with some citizens calling for accountability while others question the timing and motives behind the charges.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has reiterated its commitment to ensuring free and fair elections, urging all stakeholders to adhere to the law. As the by-election approaches, the situation in Kawambwa remains tense, with heightened security measures in place to prevent further incidents.

This case underscores the challenges Zambia faces in maintaining electoral integrity and the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions. The outcome of the court proceedings will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for handling electoral misconduct in the future.

MORE CYBERLAWS COMING AGAINST SOCIAL-MEDIA,HH

President Hakainde Hichilema has hinted at introducing a new cybersecurity law that could lead to restrictions on social media in Zambia. The government intends to take this legislation to Parliament during the current session.

In the previous session, the UPND administration introduced controversial bills that, if passed, would have imposed life imprisonment for certain social media posts. However, strong opposition from stakeholders, including Western diplomats, led to their withdrawal.

Now, the government appears determined to reintroduce these bills and push them into law. Ironically, while in opposition, President Hichilema heavily relied on social media to lie, campaign and criticize then-President Edgar Lungu and the PF government.

Zambia’s rank as 6th poorest country a reflection of misplaced priorities

FORMER Kasenengwa PF MP Sensio Banda says Zambia’s ranking as the sixth poorest country in the world by the World Bank Group (WBG) is a reflection of misplaced priorities on part of the country. In its recent Report, WBG observed that Zambia’s poverty was becoming more entrenched over time. “…In 2022, the Gini index stood at 51.5 significantly above the World Bank’s newly adopted high-inequality threshold of 40. This places Zambia as the country with the 4th highest inequality in the region and the 6th highest globally. Resource-rich countries with similar or higher inequality have substantially lower poverty levels,” stated WBG. In an interview, Monday, Banda said Zambia had a lot of resources but lacked a leadership with a heart...

ITS OVER FOR HICHILEMA AND UPND

the UPND and it’s any hired voices to guide them on how or what to do in a tripartite election, because they have already lived and experienced Mr Hichilema’s leadership, and fully understand what his “champion’s league” administration is all about, and how he has fared with the ten-point plan, he promised will turnaround the economy of this country once elected.

Our people know about the political and socio-economic uncertainties, abuse of state institutions, lack of constitutionalism, democracy, governance, the rule of law, and other numerous illegalities, Mr Hichilema has been aiding, and how the same have ended up affecting the integrity, credibility and acceptability of this government.

As we draw near the 2026 general elections, we remain confident that the millions of disappointed masses of this country are our anchor points that will help us achieve our desire to create a fair, just, patriotic and people centered governance system. This cause is unstoppable and transcends all barriers or dark forces intentions on continuing under the current order.

It’s over for Mr Hichilema and the UPND. They have wasted their time on divisive and petty issues, as an alternative to delivering on their campaign promises. They can do all they can, but Zambians have already decided that kuya bebele!

Hospitalised To Treat Bronchitis, Undergo Diagnostic Tests As Weekend Events Cancelled.

“He knows he's in danger,” Alfieri added. “And he told us to relay that.” Meanwhile, the Vatican hierarchy went on the defensive to tamp down rumours and speculation that Francis might decide to resign. There is no provision in canon law for what to do if a pope becomes incapacitated. Francis has said that he has written a letter of resignation that would be invoked if he were medically incapable of making such a decision. The pope remains fully conscious, alert, eating and working.

The Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, gave a rare interview to Corriere della Sera to respond to speculation and rumours about a possible resignation. It came after the Vatican issued an unusual and official denial of an Italian media report that said Parolin and the pope's chief canonist had visited Francis in the hospital in secret.

Given the canonical requirements to make a resignation legitimate, the implications of such a meeting were significant, but the Vatican flat-out denied that any such meeting occurred. Parolin said such speculation seemed “useless” when what really mattered was the health of Francis, his recovery and return to the Vatican.

“On the other hand, I think it is quite normal that in these situations uncontrolled rumours can spread or some misplaced comment is uttered. It is certainly not the first time it has happened,” Parolin was quoted as saying. “However, I don't think there is any particular movement, and so far I haven't heard anything like that.” Deacons, meanwhile, were gathering at the Vatican for their special Holy Year weekend. Francis got sick at the start of the Vatican's Holy Year, the once-every-quarter-century celebration of Catholicism.

This weekend, Francis was supposed to have celebrated deacons, a ministry in the church that precedes ordination to the priesthood. In his place, the Holy Year organiser will celebrate Sunday's Mass, the Vatican said. And for the second consecutive weekend, Francis was expected to skip his traditional Sunday noon blessing, which he could have delivered from Gemelli if he were up to it.

“Look, even though he's not (physically) here, we know he's here,” said Luis Arnaldo Lopez Quirindongo, a deacon from Ponce, Puerto Rico, who was at the Vatican on Saturday for the Jubilee celebration. “He's recovering, but he's in our hearts and is accompanying us, because our prayers and his go together.”

Hydropower Challenges Due to Drought: A severe drought has drastically lowered water levels in Lake Kariba, the world's largest man-made lake, leading to a significant energy crisis in Zambia. The reduced water levels have compromised the dam's capacity to generate hydroelectric power, affecting Zambia's electricity supply, which heavily depends on Kariba.

Choma Solar Power Station Development: Construction of the Choma Solar Power Station, a 60 MW solar power plant with an attached 20 MWh battery energy storage system, is underway. The project, valued at $65 million, is expected to commence operations in September 2025, contributing to Zambia's renewable energy capacity.
