ZAMBIA IS NOT READY TO IMPLEMENT THE NEW CURRICULUM IN 2025

With evident unpreparedness by the Ministry of Education, the National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) declares that the nation is not ready to implement the new education curriculum in 2025.

According to established standards, *piloting a curriculum should take at least one year.* However, the Ministry of Education, facing difficulties, attempted *a rushed pilot in less than a term.* This *brief and inadequate trial lacked necessary teaching and learning materials* — an oversight that undermines the credibility of the process.

Furthermore, despite national expectations, the orientation of teachers into the new curriculum has received *no direct government funding.* Instead, *schools have been forced to finance the exercise using school grants, with teachers often covering costs from their own pockets.* As a result, *training sessions have been insufficient, leaving many teachers without the knowledge of new teaching approaches and methodologies needed to effectively implement the competence-based curriculum.*

In some instances, poorly organised orientation workshops have forced teachers to travel long distances without food or transport allowances. Just last week, *teachers invited* by the Ministry of Education *to develop curriculum modules in Kabwe had to fund their own travel* from across the country. *Many were left stranded* and some even had their bags confiscated by lodge owners because of unpaid accommodation bills.

*With only eight (8) days remaining before we start implementing our new curriculum* at ECE Level 1, Grade 1 and Form 1, on *Monday, 10th February,* 2025, *textbooks and other relevant teaching and learning materials are still not available in schools* . This is deeply disappointing.

*Without proper teacher orientation, without necessary teaching/learning materials and without sufficient financial support, it is evident that the Ministry of Education is not prepared enough for this transition.* Therefore, realising that there are many needs competing for Treasury funding, *we strongly propose that the new curriculum be implemented in January 2026, not 2025.*

Rather than rushing an unprepared process, *Zambia must confront the reality and allow herself more time for adequate preparation.* Pushing forward under these circumstances, with almost zero funding, risks turning a promising curriculum into a national disaster.

DESPITE THREATS ON MY LIFE, I WILL COME TO ZAMBIA - MWAMBA

I'm determined to return home despite more threats of arrests and threats on my life

Newyork-31st January 2025

Following my submission to the UN Special Rapporteur of a report of human rights abuses perpetrated against myself where I cited the Zambia Police for assault, torture and inhuman treatment and susbequent malicious prosecutions citing my own experiences, the Zambia Police have responded with a ridiculous statement that I intend to seek asylum in the United States.

The Zambia Police has also claimed that my report and allegations against the law enforcement agency made to the UN Human Rights Council through the Special Rapporteur, is designed to elicit a response from them and use such responses as basis for a case of asylum as I'm allegedly seeking asylum in the United States.

The case of human rights abuses by the Zambia Police against citizens is well documented by human rights organisations including the US Country Report, the UNHCR Experts Report, the Human Rights Watch International, Amnesty International and others.

I'm scheduled to return to Zambia this week.

But the Zambia Police have already issued numerous threats of arrests against me.

Further some senior members of the UPND have called for my life to be taken away.
The Zambia Police has not even bothered to pursue persons that have issued detailed public threats against my life.

By this statment by Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, it appears that it is Government's offical intention to force me into exile or arrest me on more trumped-up charges or finally take away my life.

I've demonstrated that since I joined politics in 2022, I'm determined to be part of the process to cause positive development change in my country.

To this effect, I even paid K200,000($10,000) in nomination fees to participate in the Patriotic Front party primary elections to pick a presidential candidate.

I submitted my name, because of my local and international experience in Zambia's development agenda.
I have hoped that our members could consider my name among others, for the leadership of the party and as a Presidential Candidate.

Since then I've suffered harrasment, brutality and numerous arrests at the hands of the Zambia Police.

So the Police's recent statements of arrests and the heightened threats on my life are not helping their cause if the intention was for me to seek asylum. These actions are cementing such a cause.

So it is clear that it is infact the State and its agents intention and determination to remove me from the political scene in the build up to the 2026 general elections, either by taking my life away, or by subjecting me to more arrests on oppressive charges or by forcing me into exile.

Let me make it very clear. I have been in the United States for official duties that were earlier outlined.

I'm also very determined to return as scheduled despite the threats of arrests and the threats on my life.

POLICE AWARE OF MR. EMMANUEL MWAMBA’S PLOY TO MANIPULATE LAW ENFORCEMENT RESPONSES FOR POLITICAL ASYLUM CLAIMS
January 31, 2025-The Zambia Police Service is fully aware of Mr. Emmanuel Mwamba’s calculated attempts to manipulate police responses to his social media postings as part of his efforts to support his request for political asylum in the United States of America.
The Zambia Police Service operates within the framework of the law and has a constitutional mandate to arrest and prosecute any individual who commits an offence, regardless of their political affiliation or status in society. Zambia, as a sovereign state, is governed by laws that apply equally to all individuals. Any person who contravenes these laws will be arrested and subjected to due legal process before the courts of law.
It is, therefore, misleading and deceptive for Mr. Mwamba to create an impression that law enforcement actions are politically motivated. The Zambia Police Service remains professional and impartial in executing its duties and will not be drawn into political theatrics aimed at undermining the rule of law.
We urge members of the public to disregard false narratives that seek to portray lawful police actions as persecution. The Zambia Police Service will continue to uphold its mandate of maintaining law and order without fear or favor.

LCC DEMOLISHES 18 ILLEGAL RESTAURANTS

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) today conducted a demolition exercise of eighteen (18) illegal structures which were being used as restaurants, Bars, makeshift sleeping quarter and toilets.

These demolitions followed inspections carried out by the Council's Public Health Inspectors in conjunction with the Council Police in Chinika area, Makeni, Castle Mall area and Cosmopolitan frontage among other areas.

The Inspectors visited 82 illegal structures, demolishing 18 and marking 64 more for possible demolition.

The demolished makeshift structures were found to be causing indiscriminate disposal of waste in the drains and on-site due to the owners not subscribing to proper solid waste management systems in place.

Additionally, they were operating without licences, sanitary facilities and running water, thereby violating the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the Laws of Zambia and the Solid Waste Management Act No. 20 of 2018.

The illegal restaurant operators were also warned and sensitised against operating businesses illegally but did not comply, hence the action by the Council.

Our Public Health Inspectors will continue to patrol the city to ensure orderliness in the running of restaurants and other businesses.

All restaurants are urged to operate within the confines of the law and ensure their premises are kept clean at all times to prevent the outbreak of cholera.

The City Council remains committed to enforcing public health regulations and ensuring a clean and safe environment for all residents of Lusaka.

YO MAPS BEMOANS ZAM SELECTIVENESS

To: The Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM) and Its President,

I address this statement to the Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM) and its leadership, not out of personal grievance but out of deep concern for the integrity and fairness of the association that is meant to serve and protect all Zambian artists without bias or favoritism. It is both disheartening and disappointing to witness an organization that should be a pillar of unity and progress become selective in its engagements, seemingly favoring certain artists while turning a blind eye to the struggles and concerns of others. For a long time now, I have endured unwarranted attacks, false narratives, and organized attempts to discredit my work from a cartel of artists who have made it their mission to diminish my contributions to the Zambian music industry. These individuals have, on multiple occasions, used various platforms to attack me, undermine my achievements, and spread negativity about my brand. Despite their persistent efforts, I have remained focused on my craft and my fans, refusing to engage in unnecessary conflicts.

For quite some time, I have observed a concerning pattern in the way ZAM handles conflicts and disputes within the music industry. When artists choose to launch unprovoked attacks against me—whether through public statements, music, or social media—the association remains silent. No statements are made, no interventions are offered, and no effort is made to foster peace and mutual respect among artists. However, the moment I stand up for myself, the narrative shifts dramatically. Suddenly, ZAM finds its voice—not to address the root cause of the conflict, but to frame my defense as a disruption. This double standard is unacceptable and raises serious questions about the association’s commitment to fairness and impartiality.

The role of ZAM, as a professional body, is to protect and uplift all artists, ensuring that everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Unfortunately, the current approach seems to suggest otherwise. It is not the duty of any artist to suffer in silence while others are given free rein to slander, attack, or undermine their hard work. If the association claims to represent the interests of Zambian musicians, then it must do so with integrity, impartiality, and accountability. Picking and choosing when to be involved—especially in a manner that only seeks to reprimand certain artists while excusing others—is a betrayal of the very values that ZAM should uphold.

Music is a competitive industry, and disagreements will arise, but it is the responsibility of a professional body such as ZAM to mediate conflicts with fairness and not to allow internal biases to dictate its actions. If the association is truly committed to fostering unity and growth within the Zambian music industry, then it must take a stand against all forms of bias and selective intervention. It must create an environment where all artists, regardless of their standing or success, are treated equally and afforded the same level of protection and support.

I, therefore, call upon ZAM and its leadership to re-evaluate their approach to conflict resolution and artist representation. If this association is to maintain any credibility among the very people it claims to represent, it must commit itself to impartiality, transparency, and fairness. Anything less than that only serves to divide the industry further and diminish the trust that artists have in the institution.

This is not just about me. It is about ensuring that every artist in Zambia is given a fair and equal platform—to express themselves, to defend themselves, and to be supported by the very organization that claims to have their best interests at heart. Respect must be mutual, and fairness must be universal.

I hope this statement serves as an opportunity for reflection and necessary change.

Sincerely,
Elton “Yo Maps” Mulenga

Few Months Old Second Marriage Lands Nakonde Man in Jail

A 33-year-old man from Ntembo village in Nakonde district of Muchinga province has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labor for unlawfully wounding his 25-year-old wife, Happiness Nanyinza.

Davies Mwamulima, who married Happiness in October last year, just a few months after divorcing his first wife whom he had married a decade ago and had two children with, was arrested on December 23rd after she reported him to the police for beating her up.

During the trial, the convict denied the charge, claiming he only slapped his wife as any man would do to a "wronging wife".

However, he acknowledged not knowing his actions could escalate into something serious.

The state presented several witnesses, including Mwamulima's mother, who testified that her son beat his wife after finding her with another man in their toilet.

Nakonde Magistrate Faith Mkandawire found Mwamulima guilty on Thursday and sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment with hard labor, effective from December 23rd.
