To conclude the time spent in Harare, Friday 29th November, the WIPO-IFRRO Reprography Project meeting was held. The meeting was nothing short of insightful, inspiring and engaging.

Key highlights from today's discussions
- The panel of Copyright experts and heads of CMOs, which included ZARRSO's CEO Ms Ruth Simujayangombe, discussed the benefits and efficiency in using WIPO Connect as a tool and discussed Blockchain in depth
- The progress and challenges of the WIPO-IFRRO Reprography Project were alluded, with great strives in both Anglophone and francophone CMOs being pointed out.
- A presentation on Survey methodologies was shared by CopyGhana as they elaborated their recent success in conducting a survey. Discussed were the challenges in user reporting and innovative ways to encourage participation of users.
- Another highly informative presentation was shared by a representative of BBDA of Burkina Faso. The presentation highlighted distribution models and determining the remuneration of authors of different work classes.
- The Communication and Engagement presentation was shared by a representative of ONDA. It was underlined that the objective of communication was to strengthen the ecosystem. Further, a copyright engagement framework was illustrated, encouraging CMOs to 'Think Global, Act Local'.
- Lastly, the WIPO-IFRRO RRO Project's way forward for the year 2025 was conveyed, highlighting focus on operational issues based on the Working Groups. The meeting was also informed that we have the pleasure of continuing with Mr Olav Stokkmo as our Consultant which all present were pleased with.

Key Highlights from Day 2 of the WIPO- ARIPO Seminar
Focus: Effective management of rights

[ ] WIPO spoke about the various resources they have which facilitate effective management of rights and they include :
•WIPOCONNECT
•WIPO TOOL KIT FOR CMO's
•CLIP for creators
etc
[ ] The second speaker from WIPO, Michelle Alan, spoke about the importance of identifiers and metadata. He emphasized the importance of these for distribution purposes and management in the digital era.
[ ] Additionally, Olav Stokkmo an IP expert, shared an insightful presentation with a focus on the publishing sector, he highlighted the author and publisher benefits from collective management. He also exemplified the need for Governments to facilitate effective operations of CMO's.
[ ] ARIPO enlightened the attendees on the work they have been doing on the continent in supporting the establishment of CMO's.
[ ] Amongst the panelists was Jotam Matariro from CAPASSO, who made an appeal for Governments to decide on whether to have government owned CMO's or private ones. He expressed that if the governments settle for private ones they must play only their regulatory role and not interfere with operations of the CMO. He also emphasized on the need for Governments to take the leading role with taking up licenses offered by CMO's.
The panel discussed importance of good relationships between CMO and Copyright office.

🌍 WIPO-ARIPO Regional Seminar
Copyright: A Driver of the Creative Economy🌍

Today marked the official opening of the WIPO-ARIPO Regional Seminar on Copyright currently underway in Harare. Attending the 3- day seminar is ZARRSOs CEO Ruth Simujayangombe, as well as participants including leaders of CMOs, Copyright Office heads and other major stakeholders and partners of the creative industry.
Today’s discussions have focused on the vital role of IP in fostering innovation and economic growth across the African continent.

Key topics include:

Enhancing the IP ecosystem: Exploring strategies for building stronger intellectual property frameworks to support innovation. In advancing regional efforts, Nambia has become the first ARIPO member state to ratify the Kampala Protocol which paves the way for a Regional Copyright Database and supports socio-economic growth through voluntary copyright registration

Collaboration: ARIPO and WIPO continue collaborative efforts and strive to improve IP protection and enforcement in Africa.

Digital transformation: The impact of digital technologies on IP rights and the need for robust legal frameworks to keep pace with emerging trends. As much as the digital era present challenges like piracy and unauthorized use of works, it also provides leeway for CMOs and their rightsholders to tap into the opportunities created by digital platforms for the benefit of the rightsholders.

As African nations continue to innovate, these discussions are setting the stage for a more connected and resilient intellectual property landscape, empowering creators and innovators across the region.

On 26th September, ZARRSO held it's Breakfast Awareness meeting at the beautiful Lechwe Trust Art Gallery.
We were honored to have online presentations by Sarah Tran from International Federation of Reprographic Rights Organization (IFRRO), Nicholas Roebben and Miyuki Monroign from World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Zambia Revenue Authority, who we were also privileged to have as sponsors for our Awareness meeting, provided knowledge on Tax for Creators.
Needless to say, the insights and expertise of all our speakers left our audience enriched and we look forward to having many more Awareness meetings.
We express gratitude to our audience for attending, to our speakers for availing themselves and being part of our meeting and to Sotrane Publishers for capturing the moments.
