ZAF TO RECRUIT ANNUALLY - GEN BARRY

The Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Commander, Lt Gen Colin Barry says the Zambia Air Force will carry out annual recruitments to allow for more opportunities for members of the general public to answer the call to serve the Nation.

General Barry was speaking during the ZAF Livingstone Officers Annual Ball which he attended as the Guest of Honour last night in the Tourist Capital.

The news of the recruitment was met by a loud applause from the well attended event which was the first ball open to the invited public guests since the Covid pandemic.

Officers in attendance were further delighted to hear that in order to achieve Command's intent of a combat capable Air force anchored on professionalism and accountability, personnel incentives such as notches would now automatically be upgraded annually.

He also said financial initiatives such as special advances and in house loan package conditions would be reviewed and improved to avoid personnel engaging loan sharks and other high interest facilities.

The Air Force Commander thanked the Air Power Ladies Patron, Mrs Sharmaine Barry, for the notable works the Club of dedicated members throughout all Air Force formations in the country were doing to contribute positively and give back to their communities. He went on to thank Air Power Ladies and all spouses for the support they gave their partners throughout the year.

The ZAF Commander called all ZAF personnel and the general public to deliberately make efforts to protect and improve the environment saying "it is the only home we have so we must take good care of it."

Lt Gen Barry took the opportunity to recognise Mr Benjamin Milenge, affectionately known by most as Uncle Ben, for his continued efforts of environmental advocacy and awareness.

" The Air Force will take its role in the fight to save the environment seriously and promise that the Air Force will further increase its efforts in reforestation and restoration of natural habitats planting trees throughout all formations," he added.

He was also pleased to announce that works to establish and commission an aviation museum at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula Airport to celebrate the country's rich aviation history were underway and making progress.

Lt Gen Barry also recognized and thanked all the Air Force corporating partners for their continued love, support and respect for the ZAF and extended an olive branch for even deeper ties in order to achieve further partnership and lifetime results.

He acknowledged and thanked the Air Officer Commanding Training Command, Brig Gen Moono, the ZAF Livingstone Station Commander, Col Like Like, the President of the Mess Committe, Col Paul Besa and the entire ZAF Livingstone Executive Organising Committee for inviting him to be the Guest of Honour as well as hosting a successful Annual Ball.

SEAN TEMBO LOSES CASE AGAINST HICHILEMA’S STAY IN COMMUNITY HOUSE

By Darius Choonya

The Constitutional Court has dismissed a case in which leader of the Opposition Patriots for Economic Progress (PEP) President, Sean Tembo wanted it to compel Republican President Hakainde Hichilema to move from his private Community House to Nkwazi House in State House, the officially designated residence for Zambia’s head of state.

According to the court ruling, there is no statutory provision that compels the President to reside at State House.

The court has also dismissed Mr. Tembo's argument that the President's refusal or neglect to shift his residence to State House does not promote and protect the right to life as the said argument is improperly before court for want of jurisdiction over the bill of rights.

The Constitutional Court says it is not the right court where a petitioner can seek a relief relating to the right to life.

South African woman jailed for 50 years for $28m theft

A South African woman who stole $28m (£23m) from her employer received a 50-year prison sentence today Friday.
Hildegard Steenkamp siphoned off the money over a 13-year period from the healthcare company she worked at as an accountant in Gauteng province.

Steenkamp had earlier pleaded guilty to 336 counts of fraud.

She appeared in front of a magistrate, who said he had never worked on a case that involved the theft of such a large sum by an individual.

Magistrate Phillip Venter expressed his shock saying "to comprehend that one employee stole so much money from her employer is mind-boggling".

Steenkamp's defence was that her abusive late husband forced her to steal the money. Mr Venter disputed this and said "she perpetrated the actions alone".

Forensic investigators found that Steenkamp spent the money funding her lavish lifestyle of gambling, jewellery purchases and travel.

On one spending spree she spent $263,000 in a single night at a casino.

The court also heard that Steenkamp spent nearly $1.6m on international trips and visited Dubai frequently.

She worked at the company between 2004 to 2017 before she resigned.

Steenkamp managed to concoct this plan as she was given authority to add or remove creditors from the company's database, according to the South African police.

She added her husband as a creditor and started depositing money into his account.

Steenkamp handed herself to the authorities in 2018 and was granted bail. She eventually pleaded guilty earlier this year. (BBC News)

SUSPECTED CRIMINAL SH0T D£AD IN LUSAKA

POLICE have gunned down a suspected criminal believed to be behind a spate of robberies.

The suspect only known as Jack TC is believed to have committed a spate of crimes with his colleagues who are on the run.

Jack TC was renting an apartment in Kalundu area of Lusaka and allegedly hired a vehicle three months prior, which he used to commit the said crimes.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the unfolding of the crimes started on November 29,2023, during routine patrols when officers spotted a Silver Toyota Ractis bearing Registration CAC 825 ZM which was suspiciously parked along a small gravel road.

He said when challenged, the occupants started the motor vehicle and spade off almost hitting one of the officers.

“This prompted officers to fire warning shots and consequently three suspected criminals escaped and abandoned the vehicle. A set of number plates bearing Registration number BAE 6146 ZM, were recovered. The vehicle was later discovered to have been hired out to Clement Katunga of Katungu farms in Makeni through our investigations,” he said.

He said later on December 7, 2023 around 09:00 hours, officers went to Lusaka west in Kalundu area where they found that the suspect was renting an apartment.

Mr Hamoonga said when officers approached the apartment, two suspected criminals came out and jumped over a wall fence with a lazer wire.

He explained that several warning shots were fired towards the two escaping criminals who nevertheless disappeared into a thicket in the neighboring farm.

“Unfortunately, when officers conducted a search around the thicket, one suspected criminal only known as Jack TC was found lying on the ground after he sustained bullet wounds and lazer wire respectively. He was rushed to University Teaching Hospital, but was unfortunately pronounced dead by a medical doctor,” he said.

Meanwhile, at the apartment officers recovered the following Unregistered Mark X grey in colour ,13 ladies hand bags, a set of four black mag rims wheels, with tyres, two sets of Number plates BAX 3769 and SHIKY 1, a double sticker seal tape, two pairs of ladies shoes, ÀB BANK Cash withdraw slip by IFO SABRIE KALID, a Gun case, FNB ATM bearing card number 1646, a Money tag Slip from Atlas Mara Zambezi mall and two NRCs bearing the names of Samuel Zulu and Mooba Habombe

Mr Hamoonga said also found was a driving licence for Clement Katunga ,Sherbourne lodge identity card for manager ,12 – 2023 Inclusive Sports Festival T-shirts, eight laptop bags, six Travelling bags, four suitcases and two kit bags.

"The Owner of the Ractis vehicle has identified the now deceased as the person who had in fact hired his vehicle for at least three months.

Investigations have since been instituted and a manhunt for the suspect who escaped is on,” he said.

Chadiza hubby catches wife having s*x with 18-year old boy in the bush

A HUSBAND of Chadiza District in Eastern Province has narrated how he caught his wife bent over and being pounded by an 18-year old boy in the bush.

After only eight months in marriage, Thamison Phiri aged 22 got the shock of his life when one evening around 20:00 hours, he stumbled upon his wife and her teenage lover Azion Tembo connecting their private parts and enjoying themselves to the soundtrack of hooting owls and chirping nocturnal insects of the wild.

Lost in pleasure without an ounce worry about the possibility of being bitten by snakes or other dangerous insects, the two sinners were interrupted by the angry husband.

And in fit of rage and jealous, Phiri released the nyau in him and enrolled his wife’s teenage s*x partner to a savage beating, inflicting several injuries including stab wounds and a cut on his forehead.

For painfully redesigning, the teenager's face and hands, Phiri was arrested and arraigned to the Chadiza Magistrate Court court on a charge of assault.

In court, Phiri readily admitted to dishing out a Panganani style panel beating to the boy saying it was a lesson for him to avoid married women.

According to a ZANIS report, Tembo denied being caught in the act, asserting that Phiri acted on hearsay spread by villagers well qualified in gossiping expertisees.

Despite Phiri's admission, Magistrate Musaka is seeking more witnesses to establish additional facts for a comprehensive judgment.
