NORMALISE EARLY MORNING CHECK UPS ON ILLEGAL BEER SELLERS-RESIDENTS
Kanyama residents have urged government to intensify early morning inspections of illegal beer houses to curb alcohol abuse in the community.
Mumba Mwila, a resident of Garden House, emphasized that many illegal beer traders begin their operations early in the morning, often before council workers arrive to monitor the area.
“Government council workers should start their inspections at 04:00 hours to apprehend illegal traders who typically start their businesses by 05:00 hours,” said Mrs. Mwila.
Speaking to Ableman Media, she warned that neglecting morning inspections could contribute to an increase in alcohol abuse among young people in Kanyama.
Luyando Moomba, a resident of Makeni Villa, echoed these concerns, noting that the sale of illegal alcohol, such as kachasu, has led to the normalization of illicit behavior among junior youths.
He pointed out that the unchecked sale of kachasu has resulted in an increase in junkies and criminal activities in Kanyama, as there are no age restrictions on those purchasing the illicit brew.
"It is imperative for the government to enforce stricter laws against illegal alcohol sales to deter people from engaging in this harmful trade," Mr. Moomba added.
As of 2024, Zambia remains one of the African countries with a high percentage of alcohol consumers, with youths and women outpacing men in alcohol consumption.
