FUNSWE ELEPHANT CHARGE 2023 RAISES ZMW 3,500,000 FOR CONSERVATION IN ZAMBIA
This year’s Elephant Charge was not for the faint-hearted! With a course set deep into the Zambian miombo valley of the Funswe river, slopes were steep, and gullies were rocky.

BOTSWANA’S NATA BIRD SANCTUARY, AN AVIAN HAVEN
Covering over 30,000km² the Makgadikgadi Pans are the largest salt pans in the world. Visible from the moon, this is a vast sea of white that was once the centre of an ancient super lake, which covered an area larger than Switzerland that evaporated at least 20,000 years ago.

MIRACULOUS MANA
If you mention `Mana Pools’ to informed travellers, the effect can be magical. Those lucky enough to have already visited are launched on an eddy of reminiscence as powerful as any current in the Zambezi, the river that gives Mana its northern boundary. Those yet to visit might discuss just how high on their bucket list Mana rises.

BUSINESS IN THE WILD! HELP IT THRIVE!!
Desperate situations call for desperate measures they say, but my recent observation suggests that measures should not only be frantic but strategic. If born out of collective wisdom, they help those in dire need to navigate near-impossible situations. Out of social and economic hardships, they gracefully pulled themselves out, and they now stand out as heroines among their equals.

LINYANTI IN THE DRY SEASON
Deep in the bush, African dust has a flavour all to itself. It holds nature’s fragrance made up of seasons and years of rain and drought, inundation and desiccation, fermenting dung and brittle grass. Towards the end of the dry season, in October, dust becomes as bitter as ashes, coating one’s throat and the very lack of water, of moisture, is apparent in air that’s hard to breathe. In some places, the heat and dryness are felt more distinctly, such as in the Linyanti Swamps. This area of riverine woodlands and open grasslands forms the north-western part of Chobe National Park on the borders to Namibia.

AGAINST THE ODDS
The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus), once a persecuted species and considered nothing more than vermin, is now one of the most celebrated carnivores in Southern Africa. Zambia’s reputation for spectacular wild dog viewing is rapidly growing, sidelining Mana Pools as the previously sought wild dog hotspot. Thanks to the country’s expansive wilderness areas and continuous efforts by initiatives like ZCP (Zambia’s Carnivore Program), Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife, and support from conservation organisations and tourism operators; the wild dog numbers have swollen to an estimated 700 individuals . Zambia remains one of six countries with viable populations of painted dogs1.

With one of the highest concentrations of rock art in the world, Tsodilo has been called the ''Louvre of the Desert''. Over 4,500 paintings are preserved in an area of only 10 km2 of the Kalahari Desert. The archaeological record of the area gives a chronological account of human activities and environmental changes over at least 100,000 years.

DID YOU KNOW?
Termite mounds may reach four metres in height above ground – while their “living space” beneath each mound covers approximately 50 square metres! What may appear at first as a huge lump of dirt is in fact a complex architectural masterpiece designed to house termites. The mound is made from clay brought from beneath ground level and mixed with termite saliva, resulting in its concrete nature. The fortress-like structure protects the termites from predators like aardwolves and raiding Matabele ants, and creates precise conditions for them to break down cellulose.

Tsindi Ruins is one of the dry-stone monument in Zimbabwe. Located in Mashonaland East, near Marondera, the ruins cover about 2 hectares and the walls are built into the natural rocks on site and were once occupied by the Nhowe people.

The ruins were formerly called Lekkerwater Ruins and the stone walls were taken as a symbol of prestige and authority thus these ruins served a domestic purpose in screening and sheltering groups of clay-walled thatched huts which were the living quarters of a small elite, probably a ruling group.

The archaeological evidence identified three stages of occupation at the site each identified by different building methods and pottery types: the Late Early Iron Age Settlements, Later Iron Age settlements, and Late Iron Age religious settlement. Its a must see beauty that almost resembles the Great Zimbabwe Ruins

Mokolodi Nature Reserve is a private not-for-profit game reserve in southern Botswana. Founded in 1994 by The Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation, it is situated on 30 square kilometres (12 sq mi) of donated land, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) south of the capital Gaborone. The nature reserve is inhabited by a wide variety of indigenous African game, bird and reptile species, some of which are rare and vulnerable to the threat of extinction. The southern white rhinoceros herd at Mokolodi Nature Reserve is part of a national breeding programme, which contributes to the rebuilding of the national herd in Botswana.

KASANKA NATIONAL PARK
Writer / Photography: Dr. Brett Lewis

Measuring just 468 km2 Kasanka is one of Zambia’s smallest National Parks. The park is located in the northern area of Zambia’s Central Province and is Zambia’s first example of a Public Private Partnership between Kasanka Trust and the Ministry of Tourism. Kasanka was first created as a game reserve in 1941, then later gazetted as a National Park in 1972. Kasanka Trust, in partnership with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), was set up in 1987 to manage the park’s natural resources and help improve the lives of communities that live around the park.
