The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia this morning launched the January to June 2023 Freedom of Expression (FOX) Report. The FOX Report is an audience perception of the state of freedom of expression, media freedom and digital rights enjoyment in Zambia. The report revealed that more than half of the respondents representing 52% felt that the media in Zambia was free.

MISA Zambia is one of the local partners on the USAID Zambia Open Spaces Zambia Project. The USAID Zambia OSZ project is funded by USAID Zambia and implemented by Internews Network Zambia in partnership with FHI 360.

Culture Radio's Boyd Kaimbi Chibale (right) participated on a panel of discussion alongside Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Acting Director General Eustace Nkandu.

Culture Radio is alive to the fact that climate change is real and journalists can make a difference. People need information like yesterday.

As a member of the Disaster Risk Reduction Network of African Journalists (DIRAJ), Culture Radio visited Lome, the capital city of Togo in West Africa and the story of climate change is impacting people's lives harshly in proportions familiar to our own country, Zambia.

Floods have wrecked havoc in the north-eastern community of Amandahome, in the heart of Lome. As pictures in this post can show, several houses are submerged in water and the water does not seem to be going anywhere. People's livelihoods have been disrupted drastically.

Many families and communities experience and suffer from the effects of floods due to torrential seasonal rains and in some cases cyclones. These disasters are as a result of the fast changing weather patterns globally.

The floods always end up causing more damage to the lives of the people and consequently subjecting them to increased poverty. Essential services such as primary health care, education and the supply of basic home essentials are automatically disrupted. We have seen and experienced this in Zambia.

This calls for early warning systems to equip populations and empower them with survival skills and tools. Technology can help to foretell when disaster would strike. The media should be the best ally in sending signal and early warning to the masses before disasters strike and during disasters.

Human life is scared and highly valuable. Culture Radio stands with you to mitigate climate change.

ZCSA seizes expired Beer, Carbonated Drinks in Lusaka’s Matero Township valued around K2, 528.00

The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has seized an assortment of expired Clear Beer namely Flying Fish, Smirnoff and Amstel as well as carbonated drinks valued around K2,528.00 from the Garage and Fair Deal Bars of Lusaka’s Matero Township.
This is in contravention of the Zambian Standard – (ZS) 430: Clear Beer – Specification and the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017 adding that the expired beverages have been withdrawn from the two bars and are awaiting disposal.
In a statement released to the media this morning by Head of Communications Brian Hatyoka, warned traders to avoid supplying products that may put the health and safety of consumers at risk.
Mr Hatyoka said effective 31st July 2023, ZCSA has intensified its market surveillance inspections countrywide in a bid to curtail the sale of unsafe products covered under compulsory standards.
He said the countrywide market surveillance programme is aimed at ensuring continued compliance of products within compulsory standards, to protect consumers in line with the Agency’s mandate.
ZCSA is a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry (MCTI) mandated to administer, maintain and enforce compulsory standards for the purpose of public safety, health, consumer and environmental protection.

Poor electricity connections at Chisokone causes fire.

Traders at Chisokone Market have lost properties worth millions in the infernal that gutted the market last night.

Ms Mary Sakuluta has told Culture Radio that electricity connections are badly done which is a leading cause of fire at the market.

She has complained that ZESCO Limited and Kitwe City Council should compel traders to always engage experts when connecting electricity to their shops.

And Kitwe District National Drivers and Marketeers Association General Secretary Fatima Mwansa has appealed to government to enforce security at Chisokone Market.

Ms Mwansa said the market which accommodates more than 10 thousand traders has only one police post with only 2 officers.

She explained that some unscrupulous people stoned the fire brigade vehicle which came to quench the fire at the market and this has affected more than 34 shops burning to ashes as people could not afford to put off the fire.

She has called on government and other stakeholders to re-enforce security at the market and protect peoples property.

She narrates that some criminals took advantage of the incident and looted shops which were not even affected by the fire.

NUPEZ IN TROUBLE OVER LAND ASSURANCE TO TEACHERS

Teachers in Kitwe District on the Copperbelt have passed a vote of no confidence in their union leaders following delays to fulfill their promise of buying land for their affiliates.

The teachers have complained that the National Union of Private and Public Educators of Zambia NUPEZ have now become monisters to the teachers who ushered them into office.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved teachers during a meeting held at Kitwe Boys Secondary School in Kitwe on Wednesday, Committee Chairperson Monde Sinyangwe said the teachers agreed to hold a peaceful protest on the 25th of July to show their grievances to the Union leaders.

And District Education Board Secretary DEBS Christopher Nyungila has promised to stand for teachers adding that his pride is to see teachers happy.

Mr. Nyungila has given NUPEZ two weeks ultimatum to give teachers plots or refund them their contributions with interest.

Mr. Nyingila begged with teachers not to go ahead with their planned demonstration but rather wait for the two weeks given to NUPEZ by Mr. Nyungila the DEBS.

Meanwhile NUPEZ Copperbelt Chairperson Agent Munkombwe Chali has promised that the labour movement will abide to the directive as ordered by DEBS.

PANOS Southern Africa says it is disappointing that the Access to Information (ATI) is not one of the bills to be taken to parliament for enactment which the country has waited for more than 20 years.

PANOS Southern Africa Executive Director Vusumuzi Sifile Sibanda says failure by cabinet to include the ATI Bill on the list of bills to be tabled in parliament means the country will have to endure a prolonged wait for ATI law.

Mr Sibanda told Culture News that the delay is detrimental to democracy as the ATI Bill is anchored on the promotion of human rights and citizen participation in national dialogue.

MOAZ president Evans Banda says media owners have resolved not to relent in their quest to have the ZAMEC Bill wiredrawn.

Mr Banda told Culture Radio news this morning that MOAZ is not ready to support legislation that will stifle the operations of the media in Zambia.

He said his association is working with other organisations to raise awareness on the importance of the media to regulate themselves as opposed to statutory regulation.
