QARA PRAYING: ENCOUNTERING THE LORD OUR PEACE (YEHOVAH SHALOM)
Scripture Readings:
“Then the Lord said to him, ‘Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.’ So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace [Jehovah Shalom]” - Judges 6:23-24
INTRODUCTION
In the Scripture above, notice the context in which Gideon received a revelation, and therefore called the Lord as Jehovah Shalom. It was;
- At a time when Israel was not at peace with God because of their sinful living:
"Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" - Romans 5:1
"Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation" - 2 Corinthians 5:18
"by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace, and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity." - Ephesians 5:15-16
- At the time when Gideon thought he would die because of having encounter with the Lord
"At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook, and the temple was filled with smoke. Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips dwelling among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a glowing coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
It is important to note from these two revelations that it is impossible to relate with God without judgment unless there is peace. When we are born, we are born as enemies of God - there must be a time when we make peace with him. Further, if we live in sin, we are proposing hostility against God and it is not good for us;
"It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age— and then have fallen away—to be restored to repentance, because they themselves are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting Him to open shame" - Hebrews 6:4-6
Hebrews 10:26-27 says, "For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries."
Its important therefore that we do the best to be at peace with God - by not sinning deliberately but also regularly improving our knowledge of what God expects of us, and living it.
