HELSB AWARDS 4,683 STUDENT LOANS TO FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS AT CBU
Lusaka.... Tuesday October 28, 2025 (SMART EAGLES)
The Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board (HELSB) has awarded 4,683 student loans to first-year students at the Copperbelt University (CBU) for the 2025/2026 academic year, as part of its continued efforts to promote equitable access to higher education across Zambia.
HELSB Manager of Corporate Affairs Chiselwa Kawanda said the awards were made following a thorough and transparent selection process designed to ensure fair representation across all schools within the university.
"The allocation of student loans was carefully considered to achieve a balanced distribution across schools, with priority given to students who demonstrated both strong academic merit and significant socio-economic vulnerability," Ms. Kawanda said.
She disclosed that HELSB received a total of 11,329 applications for student loans at CBU, out of which 10,192 applicants, representing 90 percent, met the eligibility criteria.
The remaining 1,137 applicants were ineligible due to various factors, including prior sponsorship at another institution, early completion of Grade 12, incomplete documentation, exceeding the age limit of 26 years, or admission under unsupported study modes such as evening classes.
According to Ms. Kawanda, the distribution of eligible applicants showed a diverse geographical representation, with 24 percent coming from rural districts, 39 percent from urban areas, and 37 percent from peri-urban regions.
She further revealed that HELSB received 28 applications from students with disabilities, of which 27 were successfully awarded loans, while one applicant was not eligible due to already receiving support at Mulungushi University.
"HELSB remains committed to ensuring that students from all walks of life, including those from rural areas and persons with disabilities, have equal opportunities to pursue higher education," Ms. Kawanda added.
Currently, a total of 13,010 students at Copperbelt University are benefiting from HELSB loans, reflecting the board’s growing role in expanding access to tertiary education nationwide.
