Simbavati Fynbos on Sea
Situated in the Greater Knysna Area, above the quaint town of Sedgefield, along South Africa’s Garden Route, this eco paradise awaits, offering sweeping views over beaches, mountains, lagoons and a fynbos wonderland.

The nine room lodge and self-contained cottage are perched high on the dunes overlooking the Indian Ocean, surrounded by a 600 hectare pristine fynbos reserve. The estate abounds with plains game such as eland, zebra, bushbuck and waterbuck so there is plenty to see in all directions.

Immerse yourself in scenery to revive both mind and soul. Sedgefield has a tortoise as its emblem to remind visitors of the joy of ‘slow travel’. So meander along our nature trails, lie and watch the clouds or sit with binoculars. Enjoy a picnic or sundowners overlooking Gerickes Point. When you fancy a change of pace, take a mountain bike and choose from a variety of off-road trails.

Four Reasons Why Local Weekend Getaways Are Taking Off
Domestic weekend travel has started to show signs of revival since the lockdown restrictions were dropped to level 2 in August last year. Local tourists are taking advantage of heavily discounted getaways, as indicated by global tech start-up, RoomRaccoon, with weekend occupancy numbers on the rise.

Here are four reasons why the local weekend getaway trend is taking off:
1. Affordability

The Department of Tourism’s Quarterly Performance Report for the period April to June 2020 indicated that the arrival of foreign travellers was down 96.2% compared to the same period in 2019. With barely 142,000 foreign arrivals versus the 3.7 million international visitors for the previous year, the knock-on effect was a 96.9% revenue decline for the South African accommodation industry. In an attempt to offset the losses, establishments subsequently introduced discounted rates to make themselves more accessible to the local market who can now enjoy time at places they previously could not afford.
2. Uniquely packaged experiences
Verspui notes that properties that have been doing well are the ones that packaged and promoted unique experiences. Over and above accommodation, they have added value by offering welcome drinks, including a romantic meal or picnic, adding tours and tastings, cultural experiences, or guided nature walks. “South Africans are looking for escapes and hideaways, and opportunities to experience something unique and affordable,” says Verspui.
3. Enhanced confidence in Covid compliance
Minimising contact with property staff, establishing social distancing and hygiene protocols, and limiting the need to share facilities with other patrons provides guests with more control over their personal safety and has been critical in seeing the increase in local weekend tourism, says Verspui. He also believes that the Contactless Stay initiative provides added confidence that guests will remain protected. Contactless Stay allows guests to check-in and make payments online, choose a contactless key system for added safety, and allow guests to book essentials and extras – like Corona kits - in advance. On request, house-keeping services can also be excluded for the duration of a stay.
4. Technology
Like most industries, the accommodation sector has similarly turned to technology during the lockdown to create operational efficiencies. Using technology to enhance the guest experience by making the online booking process more streamlined and direct also means that establishments can reduce booking engine fees. Hotel management systems designed for boutique and medium sized properties are becoming popular, allowing them to benefit in ways that have previously only been available to the larger hotel groups. Affordable, accessible technology provides visibility of what competitors are doing in terms of pricing, so they can quickly apply rate changes to cater for fluctuations in supply and demand using automated yield management software.
“Tech is making small and medium-sized businesses more competitive and agile during a highly challenging period where they need to remain visible and appealing to the market, but it also gives them the edge to price themselves accordingly,” concludes Verspui.

South Africa’s luxury train - The Blue Train - South Africai - is starting to see an increase in the number of international guests travelling for leisure as worldwide Covid-19 vaccination rollout programmes get underway, an early indication of recovery in the tourism sector.

For the first quarter of 2021, The Blue Train welcomed visitors as far as from the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland on board the luxury train. The Blue Train has also enjoyed the company of local tourists who, following the easing of Covid-19 lockdown regulations in November 2020, have been supporting this national treasure and other local tourism businesses.

Since returning to operations, The Blue Train has had the great fortune of overwhelming support from local guests. They kicked off with fully booked trains as per new capacity dictates well into the first quarter of 2021, and continues with that winning streak. Worth mentioning is the increasing number of international guests from the United States of America and European countries that have been hosted on board The Blue Train over the last few weeks.

COVID-19 precautions, aligned with Department of Tourism and World Health Organisation guidelines have improved at The Blue Train. The latest addition to these precautions was the introduction of rapid antigen testing for all guests and crew prior to departure. This, on top of the strict wearing of masks in shared spaces, frequent sanitizing and servicing of air conditioning systems has gone a long way in ensuring that guests can surrender to the luxury of slow without any worry.

In the wake of Covid-19 - lockdowns worldwide, over a year ago, the tourism sector was among the hardest hit and lost billions in revenue in the process. The sector adapted and stayed spirited, adapting to uncertain and consequential variables within stringent health and safety guidelines. In spite of these challenges, South African guests showed up, and continue to do so, to support the industry and appreciate domestic tourism experiences.

Travelport+; a next-generation platform for a new era of travel

Worldwide leader in travel retail, Travelport, has launched its next-generation platform, Travelport+. Travelport+ is the centerpiece of Travelport’s new global strategy and is designed to accelerate industry innovation in multi-source content distribution, travel retailing and value generation.
Travelport+ is an extensive, next-generation platform that creates a simplified, capability-rich, marketplace for travel retailing. As travel distribution has evolved, retrofitting new types of distribution into existing platforms has led to increased complexity across the industry, slowing progress. Travelport+ is a true multi-source platform offering more dynamic, differentiated, retail-ready content, delivering better choices for retailers and consumers, in a faster, frictionless way.

Travelport+ offers better retailing and merchandising capabilities which in turn leads to higher value trips. Through better efficiency, supported by Travelport’s leading data and insights, Travelport+ will unlock the potential for better offers and more content for all parts of the travel industry.

Content+
Travelport+ will bring together the most compelling range of air (ATPCO, LCC and NDC), car, hotel, and rail content. It will achieve this by simplifying how Travelport connects and delivers travel-relevant content, regardless of the source, the seller, and how it’s consumed. It will also offer the tools to control new content in a way that optimizes revenue and provides a new approach to profile management where all components of a traveler's journey are able to be retrieved, modified, and combined in any manner possible, regardless of source.

Retail+
Travelport+ will include an ever-broadening array of new tools with merchandising (including cross-sell and up-sell) capabilities designed to improve the traveler experience, while maximizing revenue and customer loyalty for travel retailers and suppliers. Merchandising capabilities will build on our existing configurable storefront for travel retailers that delivers personalized and dynamic offers to provide travelers with the best possible choice. Embedded intelligence will enable both travel retailers and suppliers to continually optimize their offers, as well as their pricing and merchandising strategies.

Value+
Travelport+ will enable customers to more tightly control their cost-to-serve and enhance their value generation through a series of best-in-class performance, efficiency and automation tools. The platform will also improve the user experience for developers, propelling traveler self-service and reducing pain points with exchanges, refunds and order management.

The rollout of Travelport+ has already begun with a number of agency and supplier partners taking part in the initial upgrade. Travelport+ will continue to be gradually rolled out globally, managed by a specialized customer support team.

Emirates Skywards launches exclusive double Tier Miles offer for members

Emirates Skywards, the award-winning loyalty programme of Emirates and flydubai, has rolled out an exclusive offer to help members fast-track to a higher tier status. Members can automatically earn double Tier Miles on all Emirates and flydubai flights booked from 1 April until 30 June, for travel between 1 April and 30 December 2021.

To be eligible for the promotion, customers need to simply be existing Emirates Skywards members, or join as a new member before 30 June 2021. Members can now move up tiers faster and unlock an extensive range of benefits and rewards.

The offer applies to any ticket, regardless of fare type, purchased on Emirates or flydubai during the offer period - helping members quickly earn sufficient Tier Miles to bump up one tier status higher. For example, an Emirates Skywards Blue tier member can upgrade to an Emirates Skywards Silver tier member, and an Emirates Skywards Silver tier member can upgrade to an Emirates Skywards Gold tier member.

To learn more about the offer, click here.

Emirates Skywards offers four tiers of membership – Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each Tier offers members unique privileges and advantages, including lounge access, priority boarding, dedicated check-in counters, complimentary seat-selection, and much more.

Earn more Skywards Miles and enjoy exclusive rewards

In addition to earning double Tier Miles, members will still be able to earn Skywards Miles on flights flown during the offer period. Skywards Miles can be redeemed for an extensive range of rewards, including flight upgrades, hotel stays and money-can’t-buy experiences.

Offering members more flexibility and choice

With more than 27 million members worldwide – Emirates Skywards continues to provide its members with rich value offerings, unmatched rewards and innovative offerings. Earlier this year, the loyalty programme was one if the first in the world, and first in the region, to offer members a generous extension on tier status until 2022. The loyalty programme has also extended validity of any Skywards Miles due to expire since April 2020 until 30 June 2021.

CLOSURE OF IN-STORE TRAVEL AGENCIES A NECESSARY TURNING POINT IN TRAVEL RETAIL, SAYS EXPERT

WITH THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ACCELERATING THE DIGITISATION OF THE TRAVEL AGENT MODEL, CREATING MORE SHOP CLOSURES AS IN-STORE AGENCIES SWITCH OPERATIONS ONLINE, ONE EXPERT SAYS THIS IS A NECESSARY ADAPTATION TO CHANGING CONSUMER PREFERENCES.

Johanna Bonhill-Smith, a travel and tourism analyst at GlobalData, said the “long-term survival” of in-store travel agencies has been discussed for several years due to the rising popularity of online bookings.

“Success in 2021 will largely depend on good levels of cash flow, an area in which online travel agents (OTAs) continue to be a step ahead of traditional brick and mortar style agencies, thanks to their asset-light business models,” she said.

Only 17 per cent of the 29,744 global respondents in GlobalData’s Q3 2019 consumer survey declared they booked with an in-store travel agent, showing that prior to COVID-19, booking in-store was already decreasing in popularity.

A more recent GlobalData survey in December 2020 found that 47 per cent of 5,766 global respondents would buy more products online rather than visiting a store and 60 per cent would do banking transactions online post-pandemic.

“Lack of revenue and high demand for refunds has taken its toll on many traditional travel agencies,” Bonhill-Smith said.

“High fixed costs including high street rents would have depleted cash reserves further for in-store agents in comparison to OTAs. Store closures were considered essential for many to simply stay afloat during 2020 and some have been made permanent.”

STA Travel, a long-haul flight specialist with more than 50 shops in the United Kingdom, had to cease trading in August 2020 as costs were racking up at a time when there was little income.

Flight Centre closed 421 out of 740 of its stores during COVID-19, while Hays Travel has declared it expects to operate a ‘hybrid’ return to retail with some shops reopening and others to remain closed in relation to the UK Government’s roadmap.

Many staff have declared they are happy to work from home, which may see more permanent shop closures as a result, GlobalData said.

TUI is the most recent to announce a downsizing, with plans to close a further 48 branches in 2021. This, in addition to the 166 TUI shops that were shut in 2020, leaves the company with around 314 branches as it aims to digitise its operations, according to GlobalData.

Bonhill-Smith added: “It now boils down to survival of the fittest. The rollout of vaccinations worldwide, coupled with the supposed release of digital vaccine passports, has offered a beacon of hope for the travel sector.

“However, the news of new variants of COVID-19, coupled with ongoing lockdowns across Europe, suggests 2021 will still be a year that is far from normal.

“Traditional in-store travel agencies have been increasingly under pressure to develop their online directories to remain competitive within the global marketplace.

“The lower the fixed costs for travel agencies, the greater flexibility they will have in servicing the future travel space. Therefore, more shop closures are likely to follow as we enter the so-called ‘new normal’.”

Boost for SMEs at World Travel Market

Virtual with special exhibitor package
• World Travel Market Virtual commits support for SMEs with reduced rates to exhibit
• Multiple opportunities for stakeholders to engage and learn from each other with a compelling programme of panel discussions, presentations and events

Tourism SMEs across Africa will have a platform to connect with buyers globally at next month’s World Travel Market Africa (WTM Africa) Virtual, part of Africa Travel Week (ATW), with a special exhibitor package on offer to make it affordable and easy for SMEs to attend.
Tourism SMEs participating in World Travel Market Africa, held over three days from 7 to 9 April 2021, will have access to the virtual meeting platform and the opportunity to schedule 15 meetings, be included in the Product Showcase and also have a listing on ATW Connect’s Armchair Travel. WTM Africa will also host speed networking sessions on all three days at different times to connect buyers with exhibitors in short, five-minute meeting bursts.
Further, SMEs will have access to the exciting Content Programme which will feature two tracks tackling important topics like the Gen Z traveller, the changing landscape of the outbound market, rethinking tourism planning to deal with uncertainty and leveraging domestic tourism, among many other captivating industry-relevant topics.
“Our mantra of ‘Making Travel Happen Again’ does not lie solely in the hands of large tourism companies,” says Megan Oberholzer, Portfolio Director: Travel, Tourism & Sports Portfolio for Reed Exhibitions South Africa. “The fair majority of tourism businesses across Africa are what we would regard as SMEs and these play a crucial role in job creation and growing the economy. We want to give as many stakeholders as possible from all walks of tourism the opportunity to use our virtual platform to connect with their counterparts globally so that we can Unlock Africa for the world.”
The virtual format of WTM Africa will also apply to its suite of sister shows including International Luxury Market Africa (ILTMA), International Business Tourism Market Africa (IBTMA), The Sports & Tourism Exchange (SETE), Africa Tourism Investment Summit (ATIS), Travel Forward and EQUAL Africa.
“Our goal really is to provide a pivotal platform for the continent’s travel and tourism industry, inspiring, educating and rebuilding the travel and tourism industry over the course of the three days and beyond, whether you’re connecting with new buyers and exhibitors virtually, or attending the exciting panel discussions and presentations run by industry experts. ATW will put a firm spotlight on Africa’s tourism sector,” says Oberholzer.
To ensure a significant ROI, Oberholzer further confirms WTM Africa Virtual will be exclusive to buyers, exhibitors, trade professionals and media only, allowing them to connect with the highest level of travel trade industry professionals with direct purchasing power.
“Registered delegates will still have plenty of opportunities to generate leads, draw up new contracts, and keep the conversation going around bringing travel to Africa, and Africa to the world,” she adds.
“Of course, we would have loved to host our event live, and after a challenging year, are incredibly grateful that we can offer our industry a platform to connect, albeit virtually. Our Buyers are equally excited at the opportunity to connect.
“And, as our source markets roll out their vaccination programmes in earnest and our colleagues focus on ensuring that travel is safe, normal and enjoyable for our guests, we believe there’s no better time for us to foster this connection through a platform like Africa Travel Week. We can’t wait to see you!” concludes Oberholzer.
