Love Local stories

Muse had the pleasure of staying at the Clico – a boutique hotel that has graced the 'best of' lists of Joburg hotels for 18 years. With its in-house restaurant – Sec, JHB's culinary scene has been elevated, offering a unique dining experience that perfectly complements the hotel's luxury status.

Sec's design celebrates simplistic elegance, blending African and Eurocentric touches with effortless sophistication. Light wood tables, chic designer chairs, and understated floral arrangements create an airy, serene space that feels both intimate and expansive. Grass lampshades cast a soft glow, adding a rustic charm to the modern aesthetic. Cleverly partitioned with soundproof glass doors, the restaurant can transform seamlessly – whether you're after a cosy dinner for two or a lively gathering with friends.

But Sec's real magic lies in its menu – a harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation, wellness and indulgence. At the helm – Chef Dario de Angeli of Cube Tasting Room fame.

Join us TOMORROW for the book launch of Sipho's War at

Sipho’s War explores the contrast in civilisations as it follows a young man’s journey from rural Swaziland, a tiny southern African Kingdom, to the chaos of Europe at war in 1916.

This small band of men, most of whom had never left the simple rusticity of their villages, answer the call to volunteer in a war they cannot conceive. From being fitted with uniforms and made to wear shoes, their journey is fraught from their first terrified sighting of a train, to boarding a ship, to the dreaded ‘flymasheens’ (aeroplanes) dropping their bombs from above. It is a story of resilience, of relational tensions, of awakening intellects in a world far removed from all they have ever experienced.

Love Local stories

In the current edition of Muse - we chat with Carmen Stevens from - who was actually denied the opportunity to study in her field because the college was only open to white South Africans.
Here is a sneak peek:

Carmen qualified in winemaking in 1995 from the Elsenberg Institution of Agriculture and officially registered the first 100% black-owned winery in South Africa in 2019. It was a slow rise and one with many challenges.
Matriculating in 1990, it was only in 1993 that Carmen was allowed to start studying towards her chosen career path. In 1991, her application was rejected because the college was only open to white South Africans. She reapplied the following year only to get rejected again. This time, the reason was that she did not have any agricultural background. Carmen immediately went about obtaining a diploma in agriculture via correspondence. She applied again, a third time, only for another excuse to be made.
"I think they would have loved for me to give up. But I didn't, so they had to come up with another excuse. Mandatory military service was probably the other best option in their books," explains Carmen in amusement.
