Do’s and don’ts on the fireline.
Fireline safety.
You know what you need to do, and you are dressed appropriately to go, but You need to remember that the way you think on a fireline needs to be on safety first, safety for you and safety for those working with you.
Fighting a fire, or even just being around at a fire and helping, is a lot more than simply being dressed for the occasion. Don’t fool yourself, it’s exhaustive stuff. You are working in smoke and dust, it’s hot and you are busy. It is no walk in the park and you need to be prepared. The minute you get injured, or an accident occurs it becomes another problem that adds to the complexity of the situation. Be prepared, physically and mentally to go to a fire and work for hours as part of an organized team. Make sure you know what is required of you by reporting to the incident commander or coordinator and getting instructions. Don’t get fire fever and do not go off on your own like the Lone Ranger, effective firefighting requires individuals who calmly and deliberately work together as a team. Coordinated effort safes lives and livelihoods and minimizes damage to property and the environment. Stay calm, work as a team, and stay safe.
