The Z1 - a 2 seater roadster (codenamed E30-Z) was never produced in South Africa 🇿🇦
This one was spotted in the wild at in Cape Town.

Only 8000 of these Z1s were built between 1988 to 1991.
It is based on the E30 platform with a steel chassis, a bonded composite floor and plastic body panels.

The main purpose of this development was BMW researching and testing the feasibility of plastic body panels on production cars.
It wasn't much of a success story, which unfortunately made the Z1 unpopular.
The most famous feature of the Z1 is the vertical sliding doors. It could also be driven around with the body panels off.

While sharing the chassis with the E30, it also shares the same M20B25 2.5l straight six engine as found in the E30 325i. But the composite plastic had a negative effect by adding another 100kg to overall weight , thus making the Z1 a slower than expected vehicle.
0-100km/h was recorded at around 9seconds with a top speed of 220km/h.

Could this car be a future classic ? I wonder how many more there are in South Africa ?

The 2025 BMW M5 has been priced slightly cheaper than its Competition predecessor in Australia at AU$260k.

If our local pricing does a similar thing, we could see the G90 start from around R2.4m

That would be rather impressive considering the power and tech gain!
