“One of the criminals wanted to shoot us in the legs but his gang members discouraged him from doing that.”

“Due to previous criminal incidents we had experienced in Jukulyn, we decided to go as a group of nine workers in three cars [when we responded to a call that day].

“While I was in the cherry picker fixing dysfunctional streetlamps, I heard a gun shot. The criminals ordered me to come down and climb out of the cherry picker. They told us to stand against a fence, saying we shouldn't look at them. They started searching us, taking cellphones and money as well as other valuable items,” said the electrician.

Ride-hailing and on-demand delivery company Bolt has confirmed its Bolt Food service will shut down in South Africa in December.

The company confirmed the news to .

“At this time, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue our food delivery operations in South Africa due to business reasons,” a Bolt spokesperson said.

“The decision to exit this market is necessary to streamline our resources and maximise our overall efficiency as a company.”

The Bolt Food app will stop taking customer orders in South Africa from 8 December 2023.

- Victim of Randburg court shooting was witness against cops in assault trial

A woman shot dead outside the Randburg magistrate's court with her spouse was a witness in a trial against four police officers charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The couple were killed on Wednesday morning while en route to court by a gunman driving in a black Mercedes-Benz. A manhunt is under way for the shooters. The couple have not yet been named.

- R492m to deploy 3,300 soldiers to help police fight illegal mining

President Cyril Ramaphosa has deployed 3,300 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members for six months to assist police in combating illegal mining across the country at a cost of almost R500m.

Ramaphosa wrote to National Assembly speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and chair of the National Council of Provinces Amos Masondo on Friday informing them about the deployment.

- Two people gunned down outside Randburg court

A case of murder is being investigated after a man and woman were shot and killed outside the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

According to police, the victims were headed towards the court before they were approached by they suspects, who shot them.

Police say the suspects were driving a black Mercedes Benz and that the motive for the killing has not yet been determined.

- Court freezes R29 million belonging to national electricity voucher syndicate.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) has obtained a restraining order freezing assets worth R29 million linked to an alleged syndicate involved in stealing from Eskom, South Africa’s national power utility. The Pretoria High Court granted this order, freezing properties and cash that belong to the accused.

The alleged scheme was reportedly initiated in 2012 by Mothelli Ben Theletsane, who, while employed on a contract basis by Eskom, acquired extensive knowledge of the power utility’s pre-paid vending system. He operated as a supervisor, gaining intimate insights into the machinery and technical expertise of the credit dispensing units (CDU).

Theletsane obtained a master vending unit capable of generating unlimited prepaid electricity vouchers and several CDUs, which he hid upon leaving Eskom.

Following Theletsane’s passing in 2017, the operation was purportedly taken over by his widow, Thandi Theletsane, and their three sons. The operation expanded across all nine provinces and was lucrative enough to enable the family and their company, Mothelli Theletsane Holdings and Investment, to acquire 27 movable and 39 immovable properties valued at more than R23 million through the proceeds of crime.

- Uber to launch EV delivery bikes starting in Cape Town

Uber will launch its first electric vehicle-based service in South Africa over the next few months.

Starting in Cape Town in December 2023, the company will switch vehicles for this delivery service to fully electric models. The rollout will expand to Johannesburg in February 2024.

The new electric mobility product is one of several that the ride-hailing and on-demand delivery service company announced at the celebration of its 10th anniversary in South Africa.

- Alleged crypto fraudster's wife arrested

A Fourways woman will join her husband in the dock as part of a Hawks investigation into alleged .

The 30-year-old was arrested on Monday on charges of fraud and money laundering and is due to appear in the Alexandra magistrate's court on Wednesday.

It is reported the suspect went on a community radio station and allegedly encouraged members of the community to invest in the alleged fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme.

“The investor allegedly made an investment of R100,000 and received dividends. He then invested an additional R500,000 into the scheme after a promise of millions.

“After the R500,000 investment, he allegedly saw a reduction in the dividends and eventually received no dividends whatsoever.

“After failed attempts by the investor to get in touch with the couple, the matter was reported to the police.”

The husband is out on R20,000 bail.

- Transport minister Sindisiwe Chikunga was robbed at 3am on Monday after her vehicle's tyre burst on the N3 between Vosloorus and Heidelberg.

“It was traumatising, devastating and bad,” said Chikunga in parliament on Monday.

“After the burst tyre, we drove quite a distance until the rim was on the road. So we had to stop to change the tyre,” she said.

“It was three well dressed — not usual criminals. They forced me out, told me to sit and demanded money. They said, 'we know you have money, give us your money'.

“They were speaking isiZulu but understood English. Decent boys, around the ages of late 20s, early 30s, fit.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said in a statement that personal belongings and two SAPS service pistols were stolen during the incident.

"Members involved are receiving necessary support and counselling," Mathe said.

The award-winning singer is dropping on Friday a new amapiano single titled "Guqa Ngedolo".

While she was not sold at the idea initially, Zahara said after hearing her vocals supported by a hybrid of deep house, jazz and lounge music; then finished with synths and wide percussive basslines, she knew she was entering a new phase.

"Guqa Ngedolo" was influnced and composed by veteran music producer and Zahara's longtime friend Mojalefa Thebe, better known as Mjakes.

The track will be released this coming Friday, the 3rd of November 2023.

- Goverment extends R350 SRD grants to 2025

The National Treasury has decided to continue with the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress fund until the end of March 2025. Payments for the R350 grant were initially meant to cease in March of 2025 as announced in the budget speech in February due to it being an unfunded grant.

The SRD grant, worth R350 per month for recipients, was introduced at the height of the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020 to cushion unemployed people who were not part of the social security net from adverse economic conditions.

- Cop charged with murder of JMPD officer outside Braamfontein club released on R5,000 bail.

Police officer Bongimpilo Nzuzu Bengu, who allegedly killed JMPD officer Sibusiso Zikalala after a fight outside a nightclub in June, has been released on R5,000 bail.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said 28-year-old Bengu was arrested by its investigators on Tuesday morning. He appeared in the Johannesburg magistrate's court where he faced charges of murder.

- Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has been ordered to withdraw a notice to place Unisa under administration.

On 27 August, Nzimande signed a gazette appointing Professor Ihron Rensburg as the administrator of the institution.

This emanates from an assessment report commissioned by the Department of Higher Education and Training, that found several instances of financial mismanagement at the university.

On 6 October, Unisa sought a court interdict preventing Minister Nzimande from placing it under administration.

Developer NTDEV has managed to make a compact version of Windows 11 that occupies about 16.5% of the regular installation size, from 20GB to 3.3GB.

This release, with “a much smaller footprint,” is called the tiny11 core OS. Previously NTDEV seems to have concentrated on pruning Windows 11 to minimize its memory footprint, but their latest boast is that the actual on-disk presence of Windows 11 can also be made extremely compact.
