*SIX PEOPLE PERISH ON THE R578 ROAD NEAR MBOKOTA VILLAGE OUTSIDE ELIM IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS* .

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC is concerned about the road carnage that has claimed six lives in two separate accidents registered in less than 24 hours on the R578 road near Mbokota village in Vhembe District. The latest accident involving a Toyota Minibus and a Lexus Sedan was reported this morning. It is alleged that the minibus taxi had a brake failure, the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided side-swipe with the Sedan. A one year old baby was confirmed dead on the scene while the mother escaped with serious injuries together with three other passengers.

In another accident, five people were killed on the same stretch when a truck allegedly had a brake failure and crashed into four motor vehicles. A driver and four passengers in a VW Polo were killed instantly while a driver and two passengers from another vehicle escaped with serious injuries.

MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya has sent messages of condolences to the families of the deceased and is urging motorists to check the condition of their vehicles before they embark on long trips to ensure that they arrive alive. “The three accidents reported today could have been avoided if motorists heeded to our call to inspect their vehicles and ensure that they are roadworthy. We are still expecting traffic volume to increase overnight, and we urge all the road users to comply”

*FIVE PEOPLE PERISH IN A MULTIPLE VEHICLE CRASH* .

Five people were killed and two were crtitically injured in a head-on collision on the N1 South near Middlefontein in waterburg district. It is alleged that a Toyota SUV got a tyre burst and collided head-on with oncoming mini cooper and hyndai suv. Four people were killed instantly on impact and the fifth died on the way to the hospital. Four of the deacesed were in the Avanza and the fifth victim was in the Mini Cooper.

The N1 is currently closed between the Kranskop toll Plaza and middlefontein. Vehicles are now diverted to the R101.
