TOYOTA TRIPLE CROWN 👑

SHARI MICHAELIS AND TACK N' TOGS ULTIMO WC

Shari and her skipping unicorn Ultimo WC have been on flying form recently! Fresh from a podium finish (third) in the Burlington Cup, the pair jumped one of only four clears in the recent Toyota Shongweni World Cup Qualifier to secure their place in the jump off. Unfortunately, Shari went on to jump another clear in the jump-off, but with an error of course, which sadly cost them a podium finish. With only six WCQ jumped as a partnership we can expect big things from them in next year's WCQ series!

Shari and ‘Ulti’ will be hoping to jump their second SA Championships together this weekend and if they jump to their current form and produce more clears, they will be in for a good finish, and some nice points to add to their current 3 points total after the Outdoor Grand Prix.

Ulti was bred and produced by Lara Neill up to World Cup Qualifier level, before he was purchased by Shari in late 2022. The 13-year-old Ulano von Labos gelding has, however not had a Derby outing with either Lara or Shari, BUT Lara is a past Micro Derby winner on his dam, Whisper Cool in 2007! From what we have seen Ulti looks scopey, brave and he clearly enjoys the Bob Charter arena... Perhaps Derby will be in his genes too? As we have mentioned before, riders will need to start in each of the title classes in order to remain eligible for the title.

This is shaping up to be a very interesting Triple Crown series!

TRIPLE CROWN CONTENDERS 👑

NICOLE HORWOOD AND CAPITAL IMPOSSIBLE

The only rider to have won the Triple Crown of SA Showjumping in the same year was Nicole Horwood in 2013 on the legendary Capital Don Cumarco. She came very close to winning it again the next year, as in 2014, she won the Outdoor Grand Prix AND Derby again but missed out on SA Champs. Nicole went on to win the SA Derby again in 2016 on Don Cumarco, and then SA Champs in 2020 and the Outdoor Grand Prix in 2021 on Capital Chantilly.

Nicole’s Triple Crown contending ride - Capital Impossible - currently sits on 4 points ahead of SA Champs. While the 11yo son of the great Verdi is relatively new to the 1.50m level (having only jumped his first 1.50m at the end of last year), he is piloted by one of the most experienced and accomplished riders on the start list.

As for the third leg of the Triple Crown, Nicole will be near the top of the list of riders who have jumped the most SA Derby rounds and on a variety of rides. Impossible also had a spin around the 1.40m Derby last year, jumping double clear to finish second, and proving he is one for the big stuff! Could Nicole claim a third SA Championships title, perhaps a fifth derby title (which will push her up to second in the list of most SA Derby titles for one rider behind coach Gonda Beatrix), and maybe even drive away in the Toyota Crown? Only time will tell….

TOYOTA TRIPLE CROWN CONTENDERS 👑

JEANNE KORBER AND CALLAHO LEXINGTON

If there's a pair the crowd would love to see win a big title, it's this pair! Jeanne and Lexington are such a deserving combination who seem to have been knocking on the door for a ‘big’ one for a long time. They picked up a very popular Grand Prix win at Maple Ridge this year, and their consistency throughout the year means they are currently first in the 1.45m rankings, third overall in the 1.50m classes and lead the SASJ Riders Grand Prix Gold Tour. This consistency is going to be key for Jeanne and Lexington, who are sitting on five points after their 12th place in the Outdoor Grand Prix.

This SA Championships will be their fifth together, and they have picked up some good placings in the past with an eighth place in 2021 and a ninth last year.

When it comes to the final leg of the Triple Crown, Jeanne and ‘Lex’ are looking to be a top pick. Lexington was one of five Lissabon progeny that jumped the SA Derby last year, while a further five jumped the 1.40m Derby, including the winner Callaho Lindor with Kiara Burn. Jeanne and Lexington jumped their first ‘big’ Derby in 2021 with a few rails in an event that only saw one clear round that year. They then placed third in 2022 after a 5-way 4-fault jump-off. In 2023, they came home in second after a very unfortunate rail at the plank at the bottom of the bank after Lexington decided to jump from near the top of the bank and do one stride to the planks instead of two (showing off some incredible scope!). Could it be that they are building up from third to second to first this year and aiming to take home the coveted Derby title AND the Triple Crown?

TOYOTA TRIPLE CROWN CONTENDERS 👑

ASHLEE HEALY AND HAUSBERGER’S ELDO

One of the more experienced combinations in contention for the Triple Crown is Ashlee Healy and her 15-year-old Eldorado vd Zeshoek TN Stallion, Hausberger’s Eldo. The pair are two-time WCQ winners (2021 - Brits and 2023 - Maple Ridge) and seasoned SA Champs and SA Derby contenders. A very young Ashlee (then Hausberger) claimed her first SA Championships title back in 2010 on her very special partner Quinsey, and Ash will be hoping to take Eldo round his sixth SA Championships class this week.

Eldo has had a super run in SA Champs classes, just missing out on the podium in 2020 with Ronnie and then in 2021 with Ash, coming fourth in both instances. Eldo has also had a few goes at the SA Derby, coming an impressive tied second with one rail in 2021 with Ronnie in the saddle.

With eight points from their 9th place in the Outdoor Grand Prix, they are very much in contention for the Toyota Triple Crown title. There is a strong possibility of the pair picking up good points at SA Champs with their form of late (recently second in the Burlington Cup), and then qualifying to go through the start of SA Derby (which they have done every year for the past three years). This is a seriously experienced partnership with the potential to go all the way to a title win!

TOYOTA TRIPLE CROWN CONTENDERS 👑

DOMINEY ALEXANDER AND CAPITAL KOLLIER

Another pair that has had an extraordinary first year in the WCQ Series is Dominey Alexander and Holly Smith’s Capital Kollier. Kollier was one of the top sellers on the 2019 Auction and was initially produced up to 1.35m by Leona van der Merwe before Dominey took over the ride in mid-2023. The pair soon ascended to the 1.40m classes and jumped their first 1.50m at Burlington Cup last year, finishing just out of the placings with a very classy clear but a single-time fault. They then proceeded to win their second ever 1.50m class, the President’s Cup second qualifier; jumped two more 1.50m clears in the Outdoor Grand Prix qualifiers; and then finished 8th in the Outdoor Grand Prix, earning them a respectable nine points in the Triple Crown rankings.

Dominey has clearly formed a solid partnership with the big and sensitive son of Kronos picking up some good placings in the 1.50m Grand Prixs, but they really came into their own at World Cup Qualifier level, jumping double clear to place second in their first and second WCQs! They then jumped another clear in their third WCQ with a soft rail in the jump-off (and, outstandingly, this was their first ever rail at WCQ level!), finishing up in 4th.

Dominey has both an SA Championships title (2006 with Fedora) and an SA Derby title (2023 with Athena VI) to his name already, and with such a wealth of experience and a careful and brave ride, he is in a strong position to claim another! He jumped a steady clear with Kollier in the 1.35m speed Derby last year, so this pair could be a serious Triple Crown threat!

LEONA VAN DER MERWE AND 334 FINALE U AND CALLAHO VIDANTE

If there is one lady who knows how to win, it’s Leona van der Merwe! Leona has won multiple championship classes this year and claimed her first World Cup Qualifier win aboard Hey I’m Wilma at the Biogen Maple Ridge WCQ. She is on a winning streak, and the Triple Crown title may well be next on her list.

Leona currently has an exceptional string of 334 horses and is incredibly fortunate to have three horses entered in the 1.50m qualifying classes. Only the top 30 combinations will qualify for the SA Championship title class, and a rider can only have two horses in the Championship class. If Leona qualifies with all three, she will have to quickly make a decision as to which two to compete in the title class. This might become interesting as only two of her three rides are currently in contention for the Triple Crown title.

334 Finale U is sitting on 10 points after her 7th place finish in the Outdoor Grand Prix, and 334 Callaho Vidante, who finished just out of the points but remains in contention. This year will be Vidante’s second SA Championships and Finale U’s first! Neither of these horses have jumped around Derby, but Leona has, with her last SA Derby outing being in 2018 with Capital Cascord.

It will be interesting to see Leona’s Triple Crown strategy, but one thing is for sure – if she enters the Derby on a horse in contention for the title, she is VERY likely to come home with a prize.

TOYOTA TRIPLE CROWN CONTENDERS

LARA NEILL AND DIAMOND DUNDEE 💎

Sitting pretty with 11 points in the Triple Crown standings is Lara Neill and her big jumping gelding, Diamond Dundee. Despite not clinching a victory YET this year, the pair have had a super year in the Grand Prix series, jumping three double clears out of the four they competed in and picking up two fourths and a third along the way in 40-50 competitor-strong classes!

Originally produced by Martyn Swanepoel, Lara took over the ride on Diamond Dundee late in 2020, and the pair jumped their first World Cup Qualifier together in September 2021 and have been regular starters at World Cup level since then. This coming week will be Lara and Dundee’s fourth time at SA Champs. In 2021, they were just out of the placings, finishing 9th, and in 2022, less than two-hundredths of a second resulted in a time fault in the second round, which cost them their place in the third round jump-off, but they still finished in a third place podium finish. We’d put money on a strong Toyota SA Champs performance for this pair.

When it comes to the Triple Crown, however, this duo are yet to have a Derby outing together. Lara has ridden the SA Derby classes, but Dundee would be new to this type of contest. Yet, Dundee’s breeding would seem to prepare him well for a Derby track. Diarado, his sire, not only produced three Olympic Showjumpers this year, but also two Olympic Eventers, including Tom McEwen’s JL Dublin, who finished fourth individually in Paris! Could Dundee channel his inner eventer and bring out a spectacular Derby performance to clinch victory in the Toyota Triple Crown? Only time will tell, but Lara and Dundee are certainly a pair to keep a VERY close eye on.

ASKHQ: HOW MANY TIMES SHOULD MY HORSE MANURE EACH DAY?

A: This is almost impossible for us to answer, as it varies from horse to horse. You need to get a sense over time of what is normal for your horse and use that as a gauge. To give you some idea of the range, an average-sized horse can defaecate anywhere from four to thirteen times each day!

Once you know the average amount of manure produced by your horse each day, you should observe for any changes in this. If you are concerned that your horse is producing more or less than he usually does, or that anything about the manure is different to normal, contact your vet.

ASKHQ: BUYING A YOUNG HORSE

Q: I’m thinking about buying a young horse for the first time, but I’m worried I don’t have enough experience. I have had horses for over ten years but never owned a youngster. I can’t afford to buy a going horse in today’s market, so a young horse is my best option, but how do I know if I can do it?

A: Working with young horses can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but it isn’t easy, and you are right to be cautious. It’s great to have a blank canvas to work with, but also a big responsibility and things can go haywire quite quickly!

It is difficult to advise on your individual situation, but if you decide to go the young horse route, we advise you to have a good support system in place. We would, for instance, recommend having lessons with someone with experience working with young horses. Not everyone can afford regular lessons, but having lessons as often as possible is advisable when starting the young horse journey. Ask for homework from your coach in between lessons so that you have something to focus on when working alone, and make sure that you are comfortable enough with your coach to go back and ask for help if you get stuck.

Similarly, having an experienced yard manager can be hugely beneficial when starting out with a young horse. An experienced manager will know what to expect with a young horse and put provisions in place to manage them optimally.

Another thing to consider carefully when buying a youngster is their temperament. Choosing wisely in the beginning can save a lot of heartache later. When you go to view horses, try to get a feel for their personalities. How does he behave in the stable? What is he like when ridden? If this is the first youngster you will be producing, you want to choose sensibly and get a straightforward, easy-going type.

Ultimately, then, the choice is yours! There is nothing wrong with trying your hand at producing a young horse as long as you take the responsibility seriously (as it seems you do!) and seek help early and often.

TOYOTA TRIPLE CROWN CONTENDERS 👑

KELLY O’CONNOR AND CAPITAL MOONLIGHT

When it comes to the SA Championships and SA Derby, jumping clear rounds is key to securing the win. If you were to put your money on the winners based on clear round consistency, then Kelly O’Connor and Capital Moonlight would be your duo. Not only have this pair jumped three double clears at 1.50m Grand Prix level this year, but they have jumped three consecutive double clears at 1.50m/1.55m WCQ level!

Further in their favour is the fact that Kelly already has her name on the SA Derby trophy, having won the SA Derby in 2018 with her special firecracker of a mare Hera van de Bien. This pair also won the SA Championship twice in 2017 and 2019!

The only question mark for Kelly and Moonlight, who currently sit in 5th place on the Triple Crown rankings, maybe the third leg: the SA Derby. Despite Kelly’s experience and Moonlight’s clear enjoyment of the Bob Charter arena, ‘Moon’ has yet to have a derby outing at any level. Yet, over the past few months, we have witnessed Moonlight excel in his first year at the top level of showjumping in the WCQ, and he has more than proven that he has the scope, ability and braveness to jump whatever is placed in front of him – perhaps including the Derby bank?

We’ll have to wait and see if Kelly and Moon enter the Toyota SA Derby, but they are certainly ones to watch in the Toyota SA Showjumping Championships.

TRIPLE CROWN CONTENDERS 👑

3RD TAMARA RUEDA AND CALLAHO LIANTOS

Our latest World Cup Qualifier winners, Tamara Rueda and Callaho Liantos are also in contention for the Triple Crown. The pair currently sit 4th in the rankings with 13 points, having been the quickest four-faulters in the Toyota Outdoor Grand Prix. Tam has carefully produced this electric, athletic and good-looking son of Lissabon since purchasing him at the 2016 Callaho Auction. Tam also has a second ride in the Triple Crown: the Je T’aime Flamenco stallion, Just on Time Z, who secured the last points position, picking up a single point for placing 16th in the Outdoor Grand Prix.

This will be the first year that Tam pilots the pair around the SA Champs title class. Callaho Liantos has finished in the placings in the past two years in the adult SA 1.40m Championships. With their form of late, having jumped clear in the first round of 80% of this year’s WCQs, Tam and Liantos are strong contenders for the maximum point score at this second leg of the Toyota Triple Crown.

The final leg poses a question, however, as although Tam herself has jumped around the SA Derby in 2022 (placing 5th) and 2023, Liantos and Just on Time Z have yet to have a title-class Derby outing. But with Callaho Liantos’ success in the Bob Charter, his bravery, and the blood of Callaho’s Lissabon, a proven producer of top derby horses (including Liantos’s full brother Callaho Le Cadeau, who placed 3rd in the 2021 Derby), we hope to see them there!

TOYOTA TRIPLE CROWN CONTENDERS 👑

2ND LISA WILLIAMS AND PILGRIM

Lisa Williams is no stranger to the top level of showjumping, and you will be hard-pressed to find a SA Title trophy that doesn’t have her name on it! Lisa and her legendary Campbell were SA World Cup League winners for three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017. The pair went on to campaign abroad, competing at the FEI World Equestrian Games in Tyron in 2018 and then at the FEI World Cup Final in Göteborg in 2019. The pair returned from their successful trip and reminded us all of their dominance by winning the WCQ series again in 2021!

Lisa then won the SA Derby in 2021 for the second time (2008 - Warrangal P) and then won the SA Champs in 2022. The only title that has eluded her so far has been the Outdoor Grand Prix. This year she came close, jumping an impressive triple clear, but was beaten by the clock, and had to settle for second place on the podium and 17 points, with her ride Pilgrim.

Lisa and Pilgrim began their competitive journey back in January 2016, having imported him from Europe in 2015. The now 15 year old Hanoverian gelding by Perigueux (Perpignon x Stakkato) out of a Friedensfürst x Landfürst mare has competed at World Cup Level with Lisa. Lisa has another son of Perigeux, Perouges, who is also a half-brother to the legendary Campbell and also competes at World Cup Level.

Lisa is evidently well aware of what it takes to prepare your horse for the potentially three gruelling rounds at SA Champs and the endurance testing SA Derby. Pilgrim has already had a trip around the SA Derby last year, piloted by another expert, Jonathan Clarke, where the pair finished up in fifth with just two rails, so he is also no stranger to the requirements of these tough classes.

The bottom line is that experience counts in these competitions, and Lisa and Pilgrim undoubtedly have it!

Good luck, Lisa!

TOYOTA TRIPLE CROWN CONTENDERS 👑

With the second leg, Toyota’s SA Champs 2024, just around the corner, we wanted to take a look at our main contenders. First up, Ronnie Healy.

1ST RONNIE HEALY AND CORNET’S MANDARINO

Our current leader, Ronnie Healy has two horses in the running for the Toyota Triple Crown title, with Cornet’s Mandarino out in front with 20 points and Gillian van Orshof in third with 15 points. Ronnie and his horses are in a rich vein of form and his success with the pair did not end at the Toyota Outdoor Grand Prix, as each of his horses has gone on to win a World Cup Qualifier this year as well! Cornet won the opening WCQ leg at the 334 Sporthorse Stud WCQ at KPC by jumping a very quick clear in the second round, which put enough pressure on the other riders to force rails. Gillian van Orshof, on the other hand, has been exceptionally consistent, placing fifth in the first WCQ, jumping double clear and coming third at the Biogen Maple Ridge WCQ and jumping double clear again to win the Aquelle Foresyte WCQ.

The South African Showjumping Championship title is a title that has eluded Ronnie by literal seconds until now! He placed second in 2022 on Cornet’s Mandarino, having jumped a triple clear, and was third in 2023 on Gillian van Orshof. As far as the Triple Crown is concerned, even Ronnie’s previous SASJ Champ scores would stand him in good stead to take home the car, as the final leg of the Toyota Triple Crown is the South African Derby - a title which Ronnie and Gillian currently hold. Ronnie is a seasoned Derby competitor having placed second in the Hickstead Derby, and fifth in the Hamburg Derby as well, so the odds are well in his favour for the final leg!

Good luck, Ronnie!

A MASTER CLASS IN RIDING IN THE TOYOTA SHONGWENI FESTIVAL 1.50M GRAND PRIX

If you watched Rainer Korber and Govett Triggol's 334 Mister Twister 5 jump a flawless double clear in yesterday’s 1.50m Grand Prix, you might find it hard to believe that it was only three weeks ago that their partnership began, and this was only their third class together!

German course builder, Stefan Wirth, assisted by Anne-Marie Esslinger set a strong 1.50m track, taking the significant slope of the Shongweni arena into consideration and testing the riders with it. As a testament to his skill, there was no ‘bogey’ fence, with rails falling across the track with the lightest of touches. Several of our top contenders had one rail, and it wasn’t until number 11 that we saw our first clear from Daniela Smit and First L (in their second 1.50m Grand Prix together). The riders who had one down quickly upped their pace and opted for inside turns to stay within the top 25% going through to Round 2.

Only right at the end of the 40-strong class did three more clears come from Thomas van Rijckevorsel and Capital My Lady, Leona van der Merwe and 334 Hey I’m Wilma and finally, Rainer and 334 Mister Twister 5.

The nine-rider jump-off proved to be exhilarating; the four fault riders went first and needed to put the pressure on with speedy clears. Kelly O’Connor and Capital’s Mooonlight were the first to successfully do this, jumping a smooth quick clear in to finish on 4f in 47.82secs. Shortly after this, Hannah Garton and PMH Pollyanna pulled off an incredible inside turn to the 334 vertical, which took five seconds off Kelly’s time, coming home clear in 42.17secs. The first of the two clear rounds picked up some unlucky rails, dropping them down the order. Rainer then opted for a slower double clear and pulled it off, much akin to a schooling round! Last to go were Thomas and Capital My Lady, who unexpectedly put a toe on the first fence. They tried to catch Hannah's time but came home in 47.34s, securing them the last podium slot.

Congratulations to all the competitors; we are in for a very exciting FINAL WCQ for 2024 on Wednesday!

ASKHQ: WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF STIRRUPS?

A: There are MANY types of stirrup iron on the market, but to answer your question, we’ll group these into the main types available as a starting point for making your decision:

MAIN TYPES OF STIRRUP IRONS
Fillis stirrup irons
Fillis stirrup irons are a tradition choice for many types of riding. They are made of stainless steel and have a rubber foot pad to increase traction.

Peacock stirrups
Made of stainless steel with a rubber foot pad, peacock stirrups have elastic bands on the outside of the stirrups. This band is designed to break or release under pressure from the rider’s foot in case of a fall. This makes this type of stirrup a good, safe choice for anyone, but especially beginner riders.

Flexible stirrups
Flexible stirrups have inset pieces in the stirrup branches that are generally coated in rubber. They allow for movement in the stirrup branches, making them slightly flexible. There are quite a few options in this stirrup category, but one of the universal benefits is the softening of the impact on the rider’s joints and ligaments.

Composite stirrups
These stirrups are made of a polymer, making them extremely lightweight. They commonly have larger foot plates, grips over the sole of the foot and in many cases are angled. Composite stirrups can be used in many types of riding and are a great choice for riders looking to limit the weight of their tack and achieve extra stability in the saddle. Aluminium is a popular material for these stirrups, as it weighs less than stainless steel, but still has a traditional look.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE
After deciding on the type of stirrup that best suits you, you need to determine the correct size for your foot. You should have about 1.25cm on either side of the boot, between the boot and the stirrup bars in most cases but confirm this with the stirrup manufacturer’s guidelines.

FINAL THOUGHTS
The primary purpose of stirrups is to improve our riding and feeling of security in the saddle, so choose the style that is right for you depending on your riding style and anatomy.
