Five-year sentence for traffic cop who took R100 bribe from undercover agents

Mashack Masenjwa, a former traffic officer, was caught on camera after he demanded R100 from undercover agents.

A Mpumalanga traffic officer who solicited a R100 bribe from a motorist has been sentenced in the Middelburg Regional Court to five years behind bars for corruption.

Meshack Masenjwa, 37, was arrested in 2019 during an operation by undercover agents.

According to Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, information was received about a traffic officer who demanded money from motorists who contravened the National Road Traffic Act along the N4.

"On the day in question, the agent was driving next to Wonderfontein and was stopped by a traffic official who demanded a bribe of R100.

"The bribe was given to the agent and the transaction was recorded."

Masenjwa was later arrested and charged with corruption.

He was sentenced last Wednesday.

Mpumalanga Hawks head Major General Zodwa Mokoena welcomed the sentence and applauded investigators and the prosecution team.

She warned corrupt officials that their days were numbered.

News Local :

Calls mount for search of missing boy in Masoyi
Lesedi Chiloane was last seen at his home before reported missing about three weeks ago.

The calls for search parties and a flying squad continue to mount as the community demands that the provincial police quicken the search for little Lesedi Chiloane (7).

He has been missing for three weeks now. He was reported missing on Sunday August 28, after he was last seen working in the garden at home with his cousin and grandfather.

According to the police, the boy was wearing grey jeans and a grey jersey when he disappeared.

His disappearance sent shockwaves through Masoyi, which is still mourning and recovering from the tragic murder of Bontle Mashiyane, who was found mutilated in May, a month after her disappearance. The five accused of her murder have been remanded in custody since their arrest in May.

In this last week, community members were up in arms, and schools and roads closed as they called for the police to specify a team of experts to trace the boy.

A provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, assured the community that they would use all available members to search for little Lesedi.

“We are hard at work searching for Lesedi and we will not rest until he is found. We have a dedicated team of police using all intelligence at their disposal to try and locate the boy. We are also pleading with community members who might have information to help us in this course,” Mohlala said.

News Politics:

Mpumalanga EFF to hold third provincial people’s assembly in Mbombela
The Mpumalanga EFF's leader, Collen Sedibe, said the party is well prepared for the convocation scheduled for this weekend.

The Mpumalanga EFF’s leader, Collen Sedibe, has asked party members to remain disciplined and united ahead of the Provincial People’s Assembly (PPA) scheduled for this weekend at the Nutting House Lodge.

Addressing members of the provincial command team (PCT) during their last official meeting on Saturday, Sedibe commended them for helping to grow the organisation’s numbers.

Under Sedibe’s leadership, the Mpumalanga EFF has seen a steady growth, moving from being the third to the second biggest party in the Provincial Legislature.

They also performed exceptionally during the 2021 local government elections, when they attained several seats in municipalities.

“As we get ready for the PPA, we must engage and exchange views and ideas, but it is important that we refrain from insulting one another in the process. We must approach and do things with the spirit of unity that is aimed at further growing the organisation rather than crippling it,” said Sedibe.

He thanked the PCT members for remaining disciplined throughout their tenure.

“I would personally like to commend the work and role that you have played throughout this tenure. I want to commend EFF’s Ntsako Mkhabela, Sam Zandamela, Collen Sedibe and convener, Dr Susan Thembekwayo. you for ensuring that we make the EFF alive and present in every comer of the province. The road was not an easy one as it was bumpy and full of challenges, but I am happy that this collective is the one that took the EFF to the second spot in the Legislature,” he said.

However, he also acknowledged that there were hiccups and ill discipline here and there, but called on all party members to unite and fix all the “loose bolts” going to the 2024 general elections.

“It is important to also do a self introspection and ask ourselves important questions, such as what is my contribution to the organisation, and not what the organisation can do for me?

“Are we still serving the interest of the organisation, or our own? It is important that we do this, because the EFF needs leaders who are loyal, who cannot be pushed and reminded what to do. It is also important that we must assess ourselves so that when we accept nominations, we know the responsibilities that come with being elected to positions of power. You know, we’ve had PCT members in the past that we deployed in various portfolios, but who did not honour their deployments,” said Sedibe.

He also spoke against the culture of gossiping, arguing that true leaders do not gossip but tackles issues openly and head-on.

“The mistake we make is to talk in corners and corridors rather than addressing the matters head-on. Members who gossip are not leaders and are not worthy of leading our organisation and people,” he concluded.

Traffic department officials arrested in Mbombela and White River
The arrests followed on from an investigation into a R60m fraud, theft and money laundering case that began in 2018.

Three officials of the City of Mbombela and Mbombela and White River traffic departments were arrested in connection with a R60m fraud, theft and money laundering case on Wednesday morning, September 14.

The arrests were made by the Mbombela-based Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in Mbombela and White River.

In a statement by the Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, the total number of arrests for this case now stands at nine.

“Their arrest followed an investigation carried over from the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) during December 2018,” said Sekgotodi.

She said it had been reported that employees of the Mbombela and White River traffic departments were extending expired vehicle discs to the owners.

During the investigation by the Hawks it was established that the cashiers at the departments had colluded with the motorists after they saw that certain trucks owed a large amount of money on their disks.

“Officials would then manipulate the system and extend the expiration dates of the vehicle licence discs and reissue the new disc that showed zero balance. The truck owners would pay the money meant for the department to the officials for their own benefit, which is called money dumping, amounting to R60million.”

She said the other six accused are Thembi Millicent Motlohi (43), a former member of the department of community safety’s section help desk, Allman Thabani Masuku (35), Xoliswa Celia Ngcelwane (52), Nompulelo Winnie Nxumalo (44), Agnes Nosipho Ndzinisa (54) and Mbombela Registry authority’s Nkosinathi Samuel Gumede (37).

These six were arrested in a joint operation by the Mbombela Hawks, RTMC, the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit and the SIU on Monday July 18.

The accused were released on R15 000 bail each and the case was postponed to September 29 for further investigation.

The three officials who were arrested yesterday are expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Friday September 16.
Sekgotodi said more arrests were imminent.

The Mpumalanga Hawks head Major General Zodwa Mokoena applauded the collaboration of the investigators from different law enforcement agencies including those who ensured that the investigation was finalised and placed before court.

She further warned those who are still busy with corruption that their days are numbered and the Hawks will not leave any stone unturned in the ongoing investigation.

University of Pretoria student killed outside residence
A student died after being shot during an alleged altercation outside TuksDorp residence in Pretoria. The shooter has been caught and arrested.

The University of Pretoria community was shocked after a postgraduate student was shot dead outside TuksDorp residence in Hatfield in the early hours of September 10.

It is reported that the shooting happened after an altercation on Grosvenor and South streets at 01:40. The shooter allegedly gunned down the student for his cellphone and attempted to escape with an accomplice in a car.
UP spokesperson Rikus Delport confirmed the shooter and his accomplice were, however, caught and arrested by SAPS.

A video of the incident made the rounds on social media in which the shooter can be seen approaching the victim, who was walking alone. The man then shot the student in the chest before searching his body and making his getaway.

Responders attempted to stabilise the student, but he died shortly after.
Delport said the university is providing counselling to the victim’s friends and family.

The university’s students’ representative council (SRC) said in a statement that two people had been arrested in connection with the shooting.

The SRC added it will hold a vigil for the student on Thursday at 16:00 outside TuksDorp. The council called for an increase in security measures to ensure students’ safety in the vicinity of the university.

The university said they are saddened by the news and reminded students to make use of safety facilities such as their after-hours security escorted Green Routes.

Mpumalanga DA concerned with escalating incidents of GBV
On Friday September 2, an eight-year-old girl was allegedly r***d in the Skukuza living quarters.

The Mpumalanga DA plans to write to the minister of forestry, fisheries and environmental affairs, Barbara Creecy, to request that she appoints a special investigating unit to investigate the GBV cases that are on the increase in the Kruger National Park.

This comes after yet another sexual harassment case has surfaced in this internationally acclaimed park.

A case was opened at the Skukuza Police Station. Following this incident, communities within the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality near the Kruger National Park staged a protest and delivered a memorandum to the SAPS.

“Following the sacking of the CEO of SANParks, Fundisile Mketeni, after a very thorough disciplinary hearing, and the alleged sexual misconduct of finance minister Enoch Godongwana at Shetali, one would expect the Skukuza police and the management of Kruger National Park to be more vigilant in fighting these horrendous crimes.

“It has become evident that high-ranking officials in the ANC tend to misuse their power and do not acknowledge the dignity of women in this country. It is blatant that ANC officials continue to have no regard for women and children,” said the DA’s Women Network chairperson, Annerie Weber.

“The DA will write to the minister and request that she appoints a special investigating unit to investigate the GBV cases that are increasing in the Kruger National Park.

"It is unacceptable that women must still march for equality, fighting for the right of not being violated, killed, r***d or beaten by men. No man has the right to disrespect any woman or child in this country,” she said.
