MadibazNews – NEWS FOR THE STUDENTS, BY THE STUDENTS

10/02/2025

A group of students have blocked entrances to Nelson Mandela University’s North and South campuses, in protest against a few access-related issues.

Issues raised by students include challenges relating to financial aid, accommodation, registration and shuttle services.

Relevant staff at the University have been working around the clock to address these issues, some of which are beyond the institution’s direct control.

Engagement between the Student Representative Council and University Management will continue in a bid to iron out the issues.

Protection Services staff are working to disperse the crowd and clear entrances.

The Strandfontein and Marine Drive entrances are open, and academic and other University operations are expected to continue.

More detailed updates will follow over the course of the day.

Dear Students

The Financial Aid office will commence with the clearing of Students that NSFAS has indicated to be eligible for funding. Here are the important points to note about 2025 academic year:

All Students must complete the questionnaire during registration that talks about accommodation. Students to please use Google Chrome instead of Internet Explorer when accessing the registration site
No Student will be receiving any allowances, where applicable, if the Student failed to complete the questionnaire.

It is the Student’s responsibility to ensure that they notify both the Financial Aid office and the Housing office of where they are residing, as failure to do this will result in no allowances being allocated to the Student.
The NSFAS allowances shall be made available to qualifying Students as soon as the university receives the allowance handbook from NSFAS.

Yours sincerely

🌍 At Nelson Mandela University, the Main Campus is home to some unique finds, and one of the most iconic is the Madiba Shirt Sculpture! This vibrant piece celebrates the legacy of Nelson Mandela, symbolizing his love for his people and his trademark style that radiated hope and unity. 🇿🇦

But here’s a fun fact: it’s located on the windiest part of the campus, so when you pass by, make sure you’ve got some rocks in your pocket to stay grounded! 💨😉
