CELEBRATING A BORDERLESS EXISTENCE WITH THE FEATHER AWARDS

Press Release: Johannesburg, South Africa – The Feather Awards are back for their sixteenth edition, and this year, the spotlight was on “Borderless Existence,” a theme that embraces the concept of unity without boundaries, celebrating the ever-expanding diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond. And what a night it was!!!

As the Feather Awards continue to grow in prestige and influence, this year’s event takes a bold step forward by not only celebrating the resilience and creativity of LGBTQIA+ individuals but also extending its embrace to include differently-abled people and minority groups who have traditionally been marginalized within mainstream conversations. With a focus on inclusivity, the Feather Awards XVI will recognize and honor individuals, organizations, and projects that have made significant contributions to promoting equality and social justice for all, regardless of ability, gender, or background.

The trendy Sheds in Johannesburg delivered an unforgettable night of recognition, celebration and colourful unity. Even the heavens opened up and gave the feathers a nod of approval with its blessed showers, giving them a reason to start oh so fashionably late.

The 2024 nominees embody these ideals of courage, creativity, and resilience in the face of adversity. From trailblazing activists to supportive media figures and stars of the entertainment industry, each nominee has gone above and beyond in their efforts to push the boundaries of inclusivity. The nominees are not only shining examples of excellence within the LGBTQIA+ community, but they also actively contribute to amplifying the voices of other marginalized groups, demonstrating solidarity and championing equal rights for all.

The evening was hosted by the dynamic Dineo Langa, Khaya Dladla and Andiswa P Gebashe alongside Pink Carpet hosts Ayanda Makuzeni and Tumi Powerhouse who delivered their signature flair and energy to the event, and ensured that the night was filled with excitement, laughter and unforgettable moments. Together, they guide attendees through a spectacular program that includes heartwarming tributes, stunning performances, and the recognition of extraordinary individuals who are making a lasting impact.

Our commitment is to push boundaries and create spaces where everyone, regardless of ability or background. By honoring our nominees, we honor the strength, resilience, and courage of all those who have made a tangible difference in shaping a more inclusive society.

The Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) in collaboration with Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) hosted Limpopo media and social media influencers for a four-day lived experience to witness the beauty of the province's Nature Reserves in the Mopani and Waterberg district municipalities.

Day 1:

On Wednesday the 18th of September 2024, the media was transported by LEDET from Polokwane to Mopani District Municipality where the Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve is situated between Tzaneen and Hoedspruit. On our arrival, accomodation was booked and dinner and beverages were prepared for us. We got to sit around the fire and listen to the historic tales about Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve. The place is described as a hiker' s paradise and is located just off the R71 road outside Haenertsburg where the Drakensberg meets the Strydpoort Mountains. Lekgalameetse means a place of water and the nature reserve is the source for most prominent rivers in the Lowveld, and has water flowing through it all year around.

Day 2:

On (19 September 2024) we got to wake up early to join the Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, the MEC of LEDET Mr. Tsh*tereke Matibe, LTA's CEO Mr. Moses Ngobeni and other government officials from the Mopani district for a 8 kilometres hike led by the premier at the Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve. After the hike which proved to be a therapeutic and fun experience, a formal programme was held by the pool area, then lunch was served for everyone in attendance including the locals. In the afternoon, the media was taken for a game drive and we got to see the wild and domestic animals at the reserve. The beauty of the game drive was watching the sun set while we were on the mountain. The evening was wrapped up with good food, beverages and company.

Day 3:

On Friday the 20th of September 2024, we had breakfast at Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve, then travelled to D'Nyala Nature Reserve which is a four to five hours drive. D'nyala Nature Reserve is situated 15 km south east from the town of Lephalale in the Waterberg District Municipality en route to Botswana. Animals at D'Nyala freely roam around the area including where the chalets are situated, making game viewing a door step away. The royal treatment for the media continued on our arrival till we went to bed after midnight to rest.

Day 4 :

On Saturday the 21st of September 2024, we drove to Mokolo Dam which is 50 km away from D'Nyala. A boat cruise and snacks were prepared for us and after lunch, we drove back to Polokwane. It was a wild, fun four-day ride. Use the following hashtags to find out more about the beauty of Limpopo Province during this Tourism Month.

SANPARKS MAHALA WEEK ATTRACTS SCHOOL LEARNERS AND THE ELDERLY

With the help of Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) and Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, (LEDET) South African National Parks has kick-started their annual Mahala Week which allows citizens and residents to access their parks for free for that particular week.

Frequency Magazine was hosted by Limpopo Tourism Agency on Thursday the 11th September and we took a shot' left to Marakele National Park in Thabazimbi to see the wild life. On our arrival, the Marakele Park staff gave us a warm welcome and took us for a game drive where we got to see nature at its best.

Since it was during the day, the only animals that we got to see were giraffes, zebras and an ostrich. School learners and the elderly from around Thabazimbi also came for a free game drive which they seemed to be excited about. Speaking to one of the teachers from Advanced College in Thabazimbi, Ntshepeng Tau said: "We brought the kids here because the experience is very educational for them, especially for those who study Geography and Life Science; it helps them a lot because and they get to witness what they study in theory with their own eyes."

The Mahala Week was fused with the and campaigns launched by the Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba for tourism month. An intensive Public Relations drive by LEDET and LTA will continue throughout the month of September. Stay tuned.
