Rand Water systems are currently severely constrained, causing reduced supply to
various Johannesburg Water infrastructure. As a result, the entity’s systems are critically low to empty.

This follows the power outage at City Power’s Orlando power station that occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning (8 June), which subsequently affected Rand Water's Eikenhof pump station.

The increase in capacity in Johannesburg Water’s systems, which was noted earlier
this morning (Friday, 9 June), has seen noticeable decrease within the past few hours.

The entity says it continues to prioritise alternative water supply to critical areas such as hospitals, clinics, and schools to ensure essential services are not disrupted.

The outlets of several reservoirs remain isolated (closed).

Pumps to specific towers are also isolated as reservoir levels are extremely low or empty.

Critically impacted Johannesburg Water towers and reservoirs includes Doornkop West reservoir which is critically low, Orlando East reservoir is also critically low to empty.

"Customers are advised that the restoration of affected Johannesburg Water reservoirs
and towers will take time to fully stabilise. Further updates will be provided," said Nombuso Shabalala, Spokesperson for Johannesburg Water.

SOCCER STAR GUILTY OF ASSAULTING GIRLFRIEND

Soccer star Thembinkosi Lorch has been found guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court.

The case relates to a complaint laid with the Midrand Police by his girlfriend in September 2020, that resulted in his arrest and subsequent release on bail of R2000.

Lorch was arrested on 07 September 2020, following an incident that happened at his place of residence in Midrand, on 06 September 2020.

Fundiswa Nokuphiwa Mathithibala said she was visiting Lorch when he left her at his home to go out with his friend.

Mathithibala saw that it was getting late and messaged him to return her car keys.

"On arrival, an argument ensued and Lorch became violent towards her and started to strangle her, beat her whilst pulling her up and down. She called for help and his friend came to her rescue," said NPA spokesperson Phindile Mjonondwane.

State prosecutor, Michele Hart argued that the medical evidence corroborated the evidence of the complainant.

The accused did not have any injuries which meant that he was the aggressor.

The accused and his witness did not create a good impression in court and appeared to be not credible witnesses.

The case was postponed to 28 July 2023, for sentencing proceedings._

Children must be taught s*x education at an early age so that they know which decisions to make when it comes to their s*x life.

This is the statement from the Social Development Department Deputy
Minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu as the country concludes the Child
Protection Week on Sunday.

Bogopane-Zulu says it is important for parents or guardians to sit down with their kids and talk about their feelings, abuse, teenage pregnancy and violence.

She says this will assist the kids to understand what they must do and avoid in their teenage stage.

Child Protection Week comes to an end today following the Police Minister Bheki Cele’s crime statistics on latest which revealed that between the months of April and June 2022, there was a shocking 46% increase in child murders in South Africa, and a 58% rise in assault cases.

This year’s campaign which aims to mobilise South Africans to care and protect children took place under a five-year theme: "Let us Protect Children during COVID-19 and Beyond".

“Communities must come together to ensure that all the children are protected, safe and happy," said DM Bogopane-Zulu._

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) encourages teachers to play a proactive role in identifying and supporting children who raise reasonable suspicion of s*xual abuse, as part of fighting gender-based violence (GBV).

With the commemoration of National Child Protection Week taking place from 29 May to 5 June, the DBE is calling on teachers and schools to report GBV directed at children.

National Child Protection Week is observed yearly to raise awareness on children’s rights in South Africa.

The department also encouraged learners to report s*xual abuse, harassment, corporal punishment and GBV that take place at school.

The DBE says teachers can play an active role in ensuring that abused children receive protection.

The DBE also added that schools should have a team of designated educators to deal with GBV cases. This means there should be an effective School Safety Team and School-based Support Team whose role is to report cases and create a supportive environment for learners who are survivors of violence and abuse.

According to DBE, schools can also establish strong links with the police, clinics, social workers and other relevant government or non-government organisations who can help the school report abuse.

Each school should also have a committed Life Orientation teacher who can ensure that the school has knowledge of reporting procedures and counselling services for post-violence care.

The DBE call upon schools and educators to report child abuse cases to relevant authorities.

This information was supplied by the Department of Basic Education.

If you are a victim of gender-based violence (GBV) or know someone who is being abused, call the GBV Command Centre on 0800 428 428 or send a ‘Please Call Me’ to *120*7867 # or SMS ‘help’ to 3 15 31.

A Skype Line is also available for members of the deaf community (add ‘Help me GBV’ to your Skype contacts). The centre operates 24 hours, seven days a week.

Teachers, survivors of abuse or guardians may report any suspected incidents of child abuse to the nearest police station or call the Crime Stop at 08600 10111._

The Department of Health has been notified by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) of the increasing circulation of influenza around the country since the beginning of May 2023.

The cases have been steadily increasing since week 15 (starting 10 April 2023) and the NICD has received reports of influenza clusters in schools and workplaces.

Influenza, also known as “flu” is an acute respiratory illness caused by an infection of the respiratory tract with the influenza virus.

There are two types of influenza viruses that commonly infect humans namely A and B.

The flu viruses are typically in circulation before the winter season in South Africa.

The virus spreads from person to person through inhalation of infected respiratory droplets when people are sneezing, coughing or talking.

A person can also be infected by touching contaminated objects or surfaces that the flu virus is on and then touching their mouth, eyes or nose.

"People who are infected with influenza can prevent spread by covering their mouth when coughing with a tissue or cough into the elbow; wearing a mask, washing their hands frequently with soap and water or cleaning hands using an alcohol-based sanitiser; or staying at home and trying to keep a distance from others," advised DoH spokesperson Foster Mohale.

The 2023 influenza season started in in the last week of April 2023 when the influenza detection rate (3-week moving average) breached the seasonal threshold and remained on low activity for two consecutive weeks in the pneumonia surveillance programme.

The increase in case numbers has been identified in six provinces (KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and North West) where surveillance is conducted.

"Although majority of people with influenza will present with mild illness, influenza may cause severe illness, which may require hospitalisation or cause death, especially in individuals who are at risk of getting severe influenza illness or complications," said Mohale.

People at increased risk of severe health complications of influenza include pregnant women, people living with conditions like HIV and others chronic illnesses or conditions such as diabetes, lung disease, tuberculosis, heart disease, renal disease and obesity, the elderly (65 years and older) and children younger than 2 years old.

These groups should be encouraged to seek medical help early.

The most common symptoms include fever, muscle pains and body aches, dry cough, sore throat, runny nose, feeling tired or unwell and headache.

These may develop 1 to 4 days after infection and last for 2 to 7 days. For the majority of people, the symptoms commonly resolve without treatment.

"Influenza vaccine remains the primary means for preventing seasonal influenza infection, and should be administered at least before the influenza season (March to April). However, even if the season has already started, it is never too late to get vaccinated, especially individuals who are high risk of severe influenza illness or complications," said Mohale.

A 33-year-old man has been given a hefty sentence when he appeared in the Southern Gauteng High Court.

He was facing an assortment of charges that include police murder, two counts of attempted murder, robbery of fi****ms, house robbery, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

The man was arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on charges of robbery, attempted murder of JMPD officials and possession of unlicensed firearm as well as ammunition in November 2016.

He was subsequently sentenced to 25 years direct imprisonment on 29 August 2017 for the JMPD matter.

On his arrest, he was found in possession of a service firearm belonging to a deceased police Sergeant who was killed around Ebony Park.

"Two police detectives stationed at Ivory Park’s Community Service Centre of the South African Police Service (SAPS) were attacked by group of unknown suspects armed with fi****ms. The two sergeants were on duty driving an unmarked police vehicle around Ebony Park on 2 April 2016. Their service fi****ms were taken during the robbery, a sergeant was shot and killed on the crime scene and another sergeant sustained injuries and survived," said the Hawks spokesperson Colonel Philani Nkwalase.

The Johannesburg based Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation team also linked the suspect to another incident of house breaking in Tembisa South which occurred on 23 March 2016.

Colonel Nkwalase said two armed suspects entered into a makeshift-house (shack), fired several shots and robbed two occupants of their belongings before leaving, however nobody was injured.

The South Gauteng High Court sentenced him to life imprisonment for murder of a police official, ten (10) years imprisonment for attempted murder of police official, fifteen (15) years imprisonment for robbery of service fi****ms.

He was also sentenced to six (6) years imprisonment for possession firearm and two (2) years imprisonment for possession of ammunition.

Meanwhile on another incident, he was further sentenced to fifteen (15) years imprisonment for house robbery and robbery of cell phones, five (5) years imprisonment for attempted murder.

A further five (5) years was handed down to him for possession of firearm and additional two (2) years for possession of ammunition.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa extolled both the investigation and prosecution teams for the successful conviction and a fitting sentence.

Major General Kadwa also said “This sentence will serve as a deterrent to those criminals that attack the police who duly perform a role of a peace officer."-

Electricity minister Kgosientso Ramokgopa has assured the nation the results of efforts being put into averting the load-shedding crisis will be seen in the long run.

He briefed the media on the progress made by his department regarding the energy action plan.

Ramokgopa says he understands the frustration of many South Africans.

He says he is confident power cuts will come to an end.

Currently, due to the lower demand and improved available generation capacity, Stage
2 loadshedding was implemented from 16:00 this afternoon until 05:00 on Monday. Thereafter, loadshedding will be suspended until 16:00 on Monday.

Stage 4 loadshedding will resume at 16:00 until 05:00 on Tuesday, followed by Stage 1 loadshedding until 16:00.

This pattern will be repeated daily
until further notice.

"During the low demand periods overnight, loadshedding may be suspended for a few hours to manage the system. Eskom will publish another update as soon as any significant changes occur," said Eskom acting spokesperson Dephney Mokwena. -
