Hassen Lorgat writes: "We have the right to ponder why the action against Russia was undertaken with such haste whilst the International Olympic Committee are reluctant to act upon the anti-Palestinian entity, aka Israel.
"I sadly have to admit the Olympic ideals I once believed in are dead at the altar of the politics of greed and money. Corporations rule! Money always follows the powerful.
"It is time for us to organise mass participatory sports and hikes for fun, as they did in the early 19th and 20th centuries. We have to rediscover how to rebuild communities and solidarities without the intrusion of corporate funds."

The Elsies River Community Police Forum has had to endure unprecedented and relentless attacks on its integrity and reputation over the last few months.

As the leadership of the ERCPF we wish to place on record that we are all unpaid volunteers duly elected to represent the community of Elsies River in all aspects relating to Safety and Security. No member of the ERCPF receives any special privileges and we sacrifice our time and resources whilst placing our lives and those of our families at risk in order to serve this community.

The Community Police Forum (CPF) in South Africa is a statutory structure established in terms of Section 18 of the South African Police Service Act, 1995 (Act No. 68 of 1995). We are governed by the Western Cape Uniform Community Police Forum Constitution.

The ERCPF welcomes the intervention by the Provincial Community Police Board in seeking to resolve the disputes which have been exacerbated by the use of social media to advance a particular narrative. All the issues in dispute are being mediated by the Provincial Board and all parties have given an undertaking to refrain from inciting tensions any further.

Currently the Cape Flats including Elsies River is in the midst of a gang and drug war. With almost daily incidents of shootings, our community is gripped by fear for our lives and that of our children. We have gangs of smash and grabbers preying on commuters, extortion of almost all our small businesses is rampant and our children cannot move from one part of their suburb to the next because gang territories have made our community spaces war zones.

The ERCPF and its sub forums together with various NHW's are on the ground assisting SAPS and Law Enforcement to stem the tide of violence and bloodshed. We are focused on the task of ensuring a safer community. The constant attacks on our structures only serve the interest of the criminal elements and weakens any efforts to curb the violence.

The Elsies River Community Police Forum wants to inform our NHW and CIB patrollers that we appreciate their efforts in assisting SAPS to ensure a safer community, but we emphatically reject any acts of vigilantism or brutality. We will not tolerate any of our structures taking the law into their own hands despite the difficult circumstances of ongoing crime and violence.

Now is the time to set aside our differences and act as a united front against gangsterism and crime. We therefore appeal to the dissenting parties to allow for the dispute resolution and mediation process to proceed without inflaming and inciting what is already a very dire situation.

We have scheduled a Community Dialogue/Meeting for mid August where we will engage our community.

As the ERCPF we remain focused and committed to ensure a safer and better Elsies River.

Reaffirming Edward Said’s vision: Universities’ role in supporting Palestinian justice and solidarity

"Linking Said’s views to the current-day Palestinian struggle, we, as South African education academics, must condemn the destruction of educational infrastructure in Gaza by Israeli forces. Drawing from our painful history of apartheid education, which inflicted profound suffering and limited opportunities for black South Africans, we are acutely aware of the devastating effects of educational violence and inequity on populations under colonial occupation and apartheid." – Aslam Fataar

Professor Edward Said, born in 1935 and deceased in 2003, was one of the most influential scholars of the 20th century and a leading advocate for Palestinian

Despite severe weather from July 8-14, 76 individuals were arrested for drunk driving on Western Cape roads. During Drunk Driver Awareness Month, this highlights the ongoing issue of impaired driving and its dangers. With 225 road operations conducted and over 17,000 vehicles checked, 6,055 fines were issued for various violations. Tragically, 23 crashes occurred, resulting in 23 fatalities, including 12 pedestrians. Drunk driving endangers everyone. Let’s commit to road safety and make responsible choices.

The principles of sabr (patience) and tawakkul (trust in Allah) are not merely coping mechanisms but are comprehensive approaches to enduring and overcoming adversity, deeply rooted in the Islamic worldview.

IN the heart of Cape Town a silent and insidious epidemic grips our homes and communities – the unprocessed trauma of bereavement.

Frank Van der Horst, the former president of SACOS ( South African Council on Sport) has sadly passed on.

President of SACOS from 1982 to 1988, Van der Horst was a fiery and outspoken anti-apartheid activist.

The anti-apartheid sports organisation, famous for their slogan 'No normal sport in an abnormal society,' was established in 1973 fighting for the rights of all national sports federations to be able to compete in international competition and not just the teams of the white-minority apartheid state.

In September 2023, SACOS launched the Frank van der Horst Exhibition at the National Library in Cape Town.

Van der Horst was 86 years old.

Badsha Peer, King of Africa: Seeking India’s Deccan in South African tales of indenture

'Tracing the story of Badsha Peer – and Soofie Saheb, the man who popularised his memory – shines light on how Indian religious, linguistic, and regional identities were transformed in the Deccan and South Africa, during the colonial period and through indenture and migration.' – NIKHIL MANDALAPARTHY
