Fireworks expected as the battle for league title and promotional play-off in the NFD hots-up

By NAKAMPE LEKWADU
THE battle for league title and promotional play-off in the Motsepe Foundation Championship continues at various venues across the country tomorrow (April 20).
All eyes however will be in Tshwane where second place, Pretoria University welcome log leaders Magesi FC in the match which is expected to produce fireworks. Kick-Off at the Tuks Stadium is 3pm.
Ama-Tuks as the Tshwane side are known goes to this match like a wounded lion after a mid-week 2-0 loss away to Maritzburg United and they occupy the 2nd spot on the log with 44 points from 24 matches while their visitors from Limpopo are on top of the log with 46 points (same number of matches). Magesi dropped two valuable points at home in Polokwane after a mid-week 2-all draw against Hungry Lions.
If the previous meetings between the two sides is anything to go by, then Pretoria University have the upper hand as they have won three of their five (this include an away 2-1 victory in Polokwane in the first round match of this season) with Magesi having won a single match while the other one ended in a draw.
Magesi coach, Clinton Larsen however was optimistic that his charges will be the one celebrating a four point gap come 5pm after this encounter. “If we can produce the same form that saw us played to a 2-2 draw against Hungry Lions, then nothing will stop us from winning our match against Pretoria University and open a four point gap,” said Larsen after their match against Lions.
It is a naked truth that Magesi’s defense will have a very busy day in trying to bottle up AmaTuks’s aggressive goal-poachers such as Thabang Sibanyoni, Samuel Julies and Delano Abrahams. The trio have collectively contributed 18 of the club’s 25 goals with Sibanyoni having rattled the net eight times while Julies and Abrahams have score five apiece.
In the other league encounters six clubs will also be in a tug of war for the valuable points as the battle for top three finish is getting hot. The contest is so close that even a club on the 8th position could find itself on the third position after tomorrow’s games.
JDR FC (3rd position with 37 points) will be looking forward to maintain their 3rd spot at the expense of the struggling Venda Academy whom they host at Giant Stadium in Soshanguve while Baroka (5th on the log with 36 points) will be play-host Casrics FC (8th with 35 points) at the Global Stadium in Lebowakgomo. Elsewhere Maritzburg United (6th on the log with 35 points) welcome the struggling bottom rock side, Marumo Gallants at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium with Black Leopards taking on Upington City, and Platinum City Rovers rub shoulders against Milford FC in Vanderbijyl Park’s Isak Steil Stadium
The last two fixtures will be played on Sunday, April 21 where another promotional candidate, Orbit College (4th with 37 points) will be hosting MM Platinum Stars with 7th positioned Hungry Lions taking on Pretoria Callies away in the Jacaranda City. All matches start at 3pm. www.lepellereview.co.za

BAROKA AND MAGESI AIM FOR PROMOTION

By NAKAMPE LEKWADU
THE Motsepe Foundation Championship pacesetters Magesi FC will be looking nothing other than the maximum three points when they take on Hungry Lions
The Limpopo based side who are currently on top of the 16 National First Division log welcome Lions at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium this afternoon (April 16), and the club’s Public Relations Officer, Abel “The Lip” Rakoma told Lepelle Review that losing that match will be suicidal.
“Our mandate is to gain an automatic promotion and avoid the stress that comes with promotional play-offs. Not that we undermine Hungry Lions, but we really need these vital three points at all costs,” said Rakoma.
Magesi are on top of the log with 45 points, a point clear of Pretoria University who are heavily breathing behind them with 45 points and both the clubs have seven matches to go before they could wrap their 2023/24 season. For the record, Pretoria University will be away to the tricky Maritzburg United at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in the only match that will be played in the evening at 7.30pm.
Hungry Lions suffered a 3-1 loss to Magesi in the first round on November 11 last year, but Rakoma said: “We are not relying on those past results because that match is done and dusted. This is going to be a different ball game all together more so because just like us Hungry Lions are also fighting for the league title as well.”
Magesi who are under the mentorship of Clinton Larsen will be relying on their leading goal-scorer Wonder Makhubo and Tshepo Matsemela for goals in this match.
Meanwhile another Limpopo based side, Baroka FC (4th position with 35 points) will be looking forward to enhancing their chances for top three finish and go all the way to the promotional play-offs.
The rest of NFD fixtures today are: JDR Stars v Black Leopards (Giant Stadium), Milford FC v Marumo Gallants (Princess Magogo),
and Venda Football Academy v Casric Stars (Thohoyandou).
Kick-Off for all the matches is 3pm unless stated.

Marks Maponyane lashes Junior Khanye's comments about Chiefs signings🗣

"I am not trying to be petty ,but I think he has crossed the line. He can't be always negative , I have never heard him talking positive things about Chiefs he always talks bad, yes he has his own opinions but to attack your former club on the media? ,It's nonsensical" - Maponyane told SA Sport Podcast

"What kind of Legend do that? . I feel like he is being paid to talk bad about Chiefs , even when it comes to score predictions ,he is always against Chiefs. About the signings , I don't want dwell deep , but I am former player ,I played soccer ,when there is a new player in the team ,you encourage him and tell him what it means to play for this club. By that he grows spirituality and mentally. Not to run your mouth to media" - he concluded

Kaizer Jr Explains Blom Sale

Kaizer Jr 🗣️

“It’s a bittersweet departure because I think it’s no secret to the Amakhosi faithful how highly we value Njabulo Blom. He is the epitome of what our Academy has been able to produce over the last couple of years,” Motaung Jr told the Chiefs website.

“This is part of the plan for us to unearth talent of international standard. More so, we want to ensure that we produce talent that can go out to explore opportunities abroad. From a personal point of view, it’s great to see a young man who grew up in the system now being afforded the opportunity to expand his horizons.

“It’s a great story given our past historical link with US football… Dr. Kaizer Motaung, our Executive Chairman, having played for Atlanta Chiefs and being named Rookie-of-the-Year in the NASL, opening that territory for us, and the inspiration he got from the American League to come back and form our team here.

“This one was a while in the making. I feel it’s a great time for Njabulo to go and exercise the next phase of his life. The opportunity came about, and it has been months in the working now, sorting out the nitty gritty of the deal.

“I think there was a bit of a divine touch because we were fortunate to interact with a great Sporting Director on that side, Lutz Pfannenstiel, who was formerly at Hoffenheim. He had the foresight to bring in Bradley Carnell as head coach for his St. Louis team, and having a former Kaizer Chiefs player who is experienced in the MLS, things fell into place very well and very timeously.

“We are very happy and excited to be part of Blom’s journey. I want to congratulate Blom on his achievement and wish him the best for the future.”
