Last month we hit a significant milestone for The Great Equalizer team, proudly hitting 100 episodes. That’s more than 100 hours of talking about the wild ride that is parenting in the 2020s.

In this episode, Sam and Charlene reminisce about where the show started and how it’s grown over the years. We also chat about the new levels we’ve unlocked in motherhood, and how our views on life and parenting have changed (or not!) as our kids got older.

And what would a milestone episode be without an epic guest?! We’ve been sitting on this one for a while, folks, but we’re VERY proud to have author on the show again, this time talking about her second novel, The Whispers, and how it delves into the complex interior lives of women.

It’s a jam-packed episode that touches on the makings of a parenting podcast, growth as mothers and how the role changes from baby/toddlerhood to the heady world of primary school. It’s a coffee date with your besties about the challenges of modern womanhood, and navigating the ups (and downs!) of this crazy upside down.

Hey Motherlovers! As long-time listeners might know, one of the basic tenets of The Great Equalizer is TALKING about our mothering experience (the good, the hard and everything in between) 🌈

We firmly believe that sharing our journey can help bring mothers one step closer to sanity, which is why we do what we do.

It’s also why we’ve been banging on about the lack of mental health coverage in traditional antenatal care for the past few months. And it’s why we decided to team up with local mom and clinical psychologist to promote her online webinars.

Doesn’t antenatal healthcare from a psychologist who is also a mom just makes sense?

The latest webinar offering is Carly’s bespoke antenatal course, ‘Oh Baby, WTF’. This course helps you and your partner prepare for the many emotional and psychological changes (and challenges) that occur when you have a baby, covering:

- Identity shifts
- Your relationship with your partner, family and friends
- Career changes
- And so much more…

See this course as a toolkit to help you manage any difficulties in the postpartum period (especially the ones we don’t often talk about).
An excellent baby shower gift AND, as a friend of The Great Equalizer, you can get 10% off your purchase. Keen? Simply type OH BABY! in the comments 👇 and we’ll DM you our special redemption code.

In the best interest of better maternal mental healthcare in South Africa, please share this resource with any new or expecting moms and dads on your radar.

Visit the link in our bio to purchase Carly’s courses, or chat with for more information.

We’re also always open to DMs and would love feedback on the products if you’ve purchased any 🖤

Keep your mom game strong 👊

On this episode of The Great Equalizer, we continue to unpack maternal mental health in South Africa, against the backdrop of the trial and sentencing of Lauren Dickason and, more specifically, the IVF journey.

Where we left off in the last episode is that South African mom Lauren Dickason pleaded guilty to infanticide, and not guilty to murder, but was found guilty for murder.

In the Part I we unpacked the implications for this in the mothering community. In this second instalment we delve further into the issue of IVF, which is something that our in-studio guest, Raylene de Villiers, unpacks for us in detail.

Raylene is a mom of four and a former friend and confidante of Lauren Dickason.

In this episode of The Great Equalizer, we focus on maternal mental health in the context of the Dickason tragedy.

Lauren Dickason has been in the news for the last two or so years, but more so in recent months when the mom of three and fellow South African was convicted in the New Zealand courts for the murder of her three daughters, Liane (6) and Karla and Maya (2).

At the time of the tragedy, the South African mom had recently emigrated to New Zealand with her family. Her husband, Graham, an orthopaedic surgeon, received a job opportunity and so, like many emigrating South Africans, the family took the opportunity to seek out what they thought would be greener pastures. The tragedy occurred weeks after the Dickasons had settled into their new home, on the evening of the first day that the twins went to school.

Due to the weight of the content, this episode takes place in two parts to open up conversation around maternal mental health, with a focus on IVF in Part II. The Great Equalizer's intention is not to provide a blow by blow of what happened, or place judgement either way.

In this episode we do our best to present the conversation in a way that stays true to the story and helps unpack the feelings of many of us who have stayed tuned to what has transpired – and what information has come to light – over the last two years.

What we think is most important here is to provide context for why this story resonated so deeply for many families in South Africa, and where we can go from here as a society.

Special thanks. to in-studio guest Raylene de Villiers, who once knew the murder accused intimately during a trying time during their lives.

In Episode 98 of The Great Equalizer we’re focusing on maternal mental health in the context of the Dickason tragedy.

Due to the weight of the content, this episode takes place in two parts to open up conversation around maternal mental health, with a focus on IVF in Part II.

HERE’S A LEAP DAY REPEAT FOR FUNSIES!

(This episode was first aired on 2 March 2020).

As moms, time is one of our most precious commodities. It’s simply something we can never have enough of, right?.

Mostly we just want it to slow down, other times we want to duplicate it (or ourselves).

So this week on The Great Equalizer, Sam and Charlene ponder the BS nonsense that is a Leap Day. In case you missed it, 29 February brought with it whole 24 extra hours. Did you feel it? No? Us neither.

Team TGE spends this episode fantasising about what we would do if we were gifted 24 sweet, sweet hours. We’ve also set up some perfect-world parameters. Money? No probs. Kids? There if you want them, but well taken care of if you don’t. Sleep also isn’t an issue, unless you want it to be.

Okay now… Are you ready? Care to indulge in some harmless fantasies with your TGE gals?

Tune in now! The link is in our bio and we’re waiting for you!

“Women aren’t supposed to be angry. And an angry mother is the opposite of what we see mothers are supposed to be, right? We’re supposed to be gentle, and patient and nurturing. And so, if you’re an angry mother, you’re the worst kind of woman and the worst kind of mother.”

- Minna Dubin on

HELLO YOU BEAUTIFUL MOTHERLOVERS!

TGE is back for the 2024 mothering season, and we have another all-new BONUS episode out today featuring the phenomenal Minna Dubin.

It’s been a hot damn minute, guys and dolls! And not because we’ve been beaching. Nope, our fate has us suffering cold showers, walking in flats, considering the inescapable fate of death, drowning in a few existential crises, and pondering the fact that the patriarchy isn’t actually about horses.

In this episode of The Great Equalizer, we’re finally unpacking Barbie (the movie) and how it reflects the very messy contradictions of being a mother.

As author Eliane Glaser put it, motherhood is ‘feminism’s unfinished business’ and, to us, the Barbie movie captured this in a myriad ways, reflecting so much more than the cognitive dissonance of being a woman under patriarchy – an important central message of the movie, nonetheless.

To us, Barbie holds a mirror up to the reality of trying to mother in this world, the often fraught mother/daughter relationship, and the hamster wheel of existing as we try meet impossible societal parameters.

Team TGE unpack our personal experiences watching the movie, discuss our own relationships with Barbie growing up, and go into detail about the many ways that the movie delighted and infuriated us, and how it hit us in all the feels in very many ways.

Come on, Barbie. Let’s go party.

Asa is too friendly for my own liking sometimes 🤦🏾‍♀️🙈.

I shared in my stories about how she thinks everyone is her friend & sadly not all kids return her feelings.

How do you explain friendships to a 4 years old when it's a challenge for even us as adults🤦🏾‍♀️?

I am using the below points .

1.Acknowledge the hurt
2.Don't dismiss the feelings
3.Don't downplay it
4.Apologize that they are not okay
5.Ask about what do they need you to do, how can you help
6.Listen to the story without your feelings (because sometimes it's not as bad as your feelings make it to be)
7.Ask for clarity because sometimes they might be using the wrong words (it happens to all of us we generalize)
8. Share your own experiences

As much as we want to protect our kids, there are certain things that we cannot protect them from but we can prepare them instead, do listen to my conversation with .

Is your child too friendly? Which one resonates with you?

(PS: I cover this topic more in depth in my book The Teen Top 25 :foundational life lessons for a thriving journey to adulthood buy your copy of for R200 excluding delivery )

About Us

This Joburg-based podcast is hosted by local moms Sam Herbst and Charlene Armstrong, who believe that all parents are rocking the same kind of crazy. It doesn’t matter who you were pre-kid, what colour skin you’re in, how rich or poor you are, or whether you’re gay or straight… If you’re a parent, you know what it’s like to smell your kid’s butt in public and you can probably identify with fantasising about killing your sleeping partner during a 03:00 am wakeup call.

Here at The Great Equalizer we laugh, bitch and cry about the ups and downs of our current upside-down. There’s just one rule (and it’s non-negotiable): NO JUDGIES. Okay? Okay.

*And because your hosts don’t know what the frack we’re doing 99% of the time, we touch base with experts who do. So, hey, you may just learn something too ;)
