Broos: It's not always the favourites that wins, Nigeria cannot beat Bafana

Head coach Hugo Broos has warned that Nigeria’s tag of being 'favourites' will not discourage his Bafana side as the two nations prepare to lock horns in the semi-final of the AFCON.

"I have to say that we are very happy and motivated that tomorrow we play in the semi-final of AFCON. I think for many people it was unexpected but we did it and that means that South Africa became a good team," Broos said.

"It’s also more than 20 years ago that South Africa played in a semi-final. Even more that we played in a final. So that means that we have a lot of motivation. The semi-final we have it always but also we want to have the final on Sunday.

"Tomorrow we play against a very good team tomorrow, number six in the Africa ranking, so that means a lot. Most players play abroad.

"It’s a little bit the same situation with Morocco, a very good team with players that play I Europe with big teams. So, you can compare it. I think for many people Nigeria tomorrow will be favourites to win that game but as you know in football, it’s not always the favourites that win.

"We are confident and motivated to try and make sure that doesn’t happen and that South Africa after more than 20 years, is in the final.

"I said already that we are confident and we believe in ourselves, and therefore, we are not afraid of anybody again," Broos said.

"We know and we believe also that it is possible to beat any team in this tournament if we keep playing at our level."

"Maybe now there will be more interest in South African players because that is a little bit what we don’t have in South Africa."

Broos: Makgopa is the best striker in South Africa, those who doubted him are now praising him

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was full of praise of for striker Evidence Makgopa, who scored the opening goal as South Africa overcame number-one ranked Morocco in the last 16 of the AFCON.

"We have players as you said, we have Themba Zwane who was two times player of the match, today Teboho [Mokoena], that means that we are good as a team and that we have some players that can make a difference and this is important.

"Like today, fantastic free-kick from Teboho, a nice ball from Makgopa. Those who doubted him when he was with us, Makgopa, I always believed in Makgopa.

"Always! This guy, Makgopa, is a very good striker, the best in South Africa, believe me, and he proved it today. He works hard and he scored a fantastic goal.

Mayo: Bafana will play three games and come back home, Makgopa don't deserve to be in the squad

Former Bafana Bafana striker Patrick Mayo is not happy with the group of players selected to represent South Africa in the 2024 Africa Cup Of Nations.

"The way I see it we will only play the three games and come back home. We won't make it to the group stages," Mayo said.

"We have a weak team, how can we play a draw with Lesotho when your first game in the AFCON is against Mali? We should be beating countries like Lesotho by nine goals to show we are preparing for a big tournament."

"I'm seriously not happy with the selection. Some of the players that deserve to be in the national team were left behind for no reason. It seems performance doesn't count.

"I don't have a problem that Hugo Broos selected many players from Mamelodi Sundowns, some of them deserve to be there. We cannot run away from that.

"But as for Evidence Makgopa, he was not supposed to be there. I'm not saying this because my child has been left out [Khanyisa Mayo], but a lot of people have been asking why a top goalscorer is not there. Where is Given Msimango? Fagrie Lakay? Because they deserve to be in Ivory Coast.

Khune: We showed Stellenbosch who the real champions are

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune says All Stars showed "who the real champions are" after defeating Stellenbosch FC on Saturday.

"We wanted it so badly, we had a few days to prepare for this cup and obviously we're facing the champions of 2023 and we gave them the respect they deserve, we gave them a good run for their money. And we showed today who the real champions are, Black Label All Stars," Khune said on SuperSport TV.

"This game was all about enjoying ourselves and giving back to these lovely people who have come in numbers to support us and those ones at home, who have voted to see each and every player representing the All Stars team.
