Making Waste Change Ep. 1: Zweli and The People's Pantry.

In the heart of Bez Valley is the success story of a partnership between multiple projects that is cleaning up the local area, feeding the community, and reducing food wastage. Love Our City Klean (LOCK) has teamed up with The People's Pantry (TPP) to create a partnership that allows residents to collect recyclable waste and turn that into points that can be redeemed for food parcels saved from landfill by SA Harvest. Making Waste Change is a short documentary that gives an insight into their successes and the challenges that they face in order to raise awareness and help to mobilise people to help out- whether that be through waste collection, administrative support or food donation.

A summit of colour, culture, and medicine.
A summit hoping to get finalities between the traditional medicine professionals of the country and the government.

The Traditional Medicine Summit. Recognizing the country wide professionals, the challenges holding them back in South Africa, and the regulations to assist the sector.

There are over 300 000 traditional health practitioners in SA, and the WHO says 80% of people use traditional medicine. But there is still a strong taboo associated with the sector compared to the well regulated and fund Western medicine industry.

These images were of their special ritual to begin the summit, with traditional medicine practitioners representative of all 9 provinces of South Africa.

Inspired by a recent shoot, filming adventurous photographers on a photo walk in Hatfield Pretoria and Rosebank Johannesburg, which I didn't get the chance to take actual photos while I filmed... but ... here in my home of Parkview, I had a lovely warm lighted afternoon walking the dogs under the pretty purple trees.
We love the Jacaranda season.

Just another windy day filming in the Cape, on top of Steenbrasd Dam, with a great friend and colleague. A surreal place, windy as hell, quiet like area 51 and absolutely massively beautiful.
Is where the these lovely people get there water, and electricity... 100 years old says a sign that was proudly put up by the City of Cape Town.

Roads, homes, businesses and lives rapidly taken away by the floods of Durban.

The count has begun for all those lost and passed away, all that has been lost, all those that need help and relief, and everything that must be rebuilt. A challenge felt hardest by the residents of flood wrecked Durban.

Memorial to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu 1931 - 2021
My Johannesburg emorial pictures.

South Africa and the world mourns, remembers and thanks the late Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who passed away on boxing day 2021. A person of God, a soul for humanity, a thinker and thought provoker, a liberator, a joker, a friend and a family man.

Revered for his opposition to the oppression of Apartheid, his work in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and his continued work to heal the wounds of South Africa and its past. He did not let up even into his later years, challenging the country and its leaders with their difficulties of corruption, uninclusive factions and prejudices. Alway aspiring for human rights and freedoms.

In Johannesburg there have been memorials to the late Archbishop from places of interest, such as his old home in Vilakazi street Soweto where he lived from 1975. Vilakazi street is a unique street in that it holds the only place on Earth where two Nobel Peace Prize winners stayed, namely that of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Other places of interest were the Anglican Cathedral of St Mary The Virgin Johannesburg, where he was ordained as a Deacon in 1960, then Dean of Johannesburg in 1975 and made the first black Bishop of the city in 1985.

He is loved, missed, remembered and thanked by his family, the people of South Africa, the church, all other religions and citizens across the globe.

His funeral is the 1st of January 2021, St George's Cathedral, Cape Town

27/07/2021

Mr Roy Chen, of the Blanket Plaza in Durban South Africa, stands in the middle of all he once built and managed for over 10 years... now ash, crumbling brick and twisted metal.

With so many places affected by the recent unrest in South Africa, one sees how large the scale of destruction and loss was. But separating the small stories we see the lasting personal impact this had brought. Filming for a Chinese broadcast platform I was presented with this story. The loss of hope after building a business in a foreign land over 10 years, the pain of not knowing what to do next and what to do for those that used to work here. Losing confidence of staying the course in South Africa when all you built was destroyed in 1 day.

The equation as I was told... 1 is 4, so 100 is 400, and thats how may people lost out here at just one blanket factory. There were just 100 employees here, which would have supported conservatively a home of 4. But now there is no factory, no jobs, and no support.

The factory produced for local markets at a rate of 2000 blankets daily. But with the a fiery loss of about 60 million South African Rands, there isn't much hope says Roy of coming back into operations, and going home to China might be his only option. Leaving behind roughly 100 homes without their once viable income.

Phase in the elderly, phase in those at risk, phase in phase 2 and get the jab.

South Africa has begun its next phase of COVID19 vaccinations, which is specifically targeted at those aged 60 and above, and those with comordities that out them at serious risk to the virus.

Officials praise the second phase despite a slow start and few hiccups. Around 90 of the prospective 3000 sights had opened up to accept those pre-registered, and accommodate walk-ins on the day.

Many of the eldery and the clergy on the day praised that they finally got their much needed protection. Religious leaders took up the jab and would pray for their believers to follow the good vaccination path. The elderly became hopeful and rejoice they would be safe now thanks to their country's efforts.

Some saddened that they had to get the Pfizer vac and not J&J, as the BioNtech jab is a 2 shot vaccine versus the 1 shot Johnson & Johnson vac. They would argue they have to come back for their second shot in June, as they are older and busier in their lives to live, already complicated with the inequalities of their area and family responsibilities. They would rather the single shot jab. J&J has been designated to rural spaces for its hardier nature with temperature fluctuations, whereas the Pfizer vaccine is very temperamental in such that it must be kept at a temperature of minus 70 degrees celsius, and the infrastructure and refrigeration is bound to be in the uban cities of the country.

Numbers of people seem slow at the start, with a mixture of those unsure of the vac being the great saviour, and the difficulties of asking those that are poor or not so tech savvy to have to pre-register before going to the clinic, and would ask what would have been done for similar situations before the times of cellphones and data.

The next phase of the vaccination of South Africa has been phased in, with its phasing through those keen and other not so fazed.

An homage collage to those that move the garbage. For Global Recycling Day, 18th of March.

A moment to take some quick snaps of the informal and often sneered at waste pickers and collectors of the Jozi streets. Just trying to make some money, and saving the government a good couple million a year.

Spent a moment here at the Wastepreneurs sight in Parkhurst/Greenside, watching these guys sort between the different grades of precious cardboard, glass, plastic and metals, to be able to weigh it up and earn maybe 100 or 200 Rands for the day. The only way they've been able to earn, and after the research has found that they collectively across the country save the government around R750 million in landfill costs annually, they're still informal waste pickers, riding on hand made trolleys, and loved by few and sneered by the unenlightened.

It wasn't that long ago the City Of Joburg was pushing to evict the waste pickers and their collection sight in the quiet clean suburban area, but failed, and the local neighbors with reinvigorated interests helped preserve their ability to keep collecting. So they've managed to keep the trolleys rolling and save the government some more bucks, while trying to make some bucks of their own.

How well do you recycle? How well does the country recycle? Of the 10 million tons of waste a year we make, only 10% is separated in areas such as where these guys ride. The rest goes into our coming of ripe-old-age landfills. The around 90 000 waste pickers of the country do most of the sorting around here, before the government has to pay for the rest of us to fill up those overflowing holes.

18/02/2021

Jabs all round for the frontliner. Between all the sharp stares and hustle of medical staff, were delighted and relieved health workers receiving their long awaited vaccinations against Covid-19. The Johnson & Johnson jab had made it to the country and into their arms, and many more to come as the country seeks heard immunity by inoculating enough of the country's population.
These health workers were so delighted to be photographed, it's almost like no one has really seen them at work, and here they are being the first to be vaccinated, and steadfast to keep the heroic work up.
Here's to you, the frontliners, as like myself, we can all return home after a hard days work, and maybe not even have to step out the front door for the pandemic... But they step right back in it each day. But finally the jabs are here, and they breathe easier and with hope, and certainly not complaining about the poke. As Cyril said, "it's just a little prick", but really it's hope and relief in a needle in a time of need for our health workers and the county.

Nan Hua Temple in Bronkhorstspruit, sadly nothing to come see here.

The Covid-19 virus with South Africa's lockdown protocols has left this beautiful and spiritual place gloomily quiet, namely because it's meant to be the ringing in of the Chinese lunar new year, the year of the Ox (12 February 2021).

Sadly this year there shall be no gentle sounds of Chinese cultural instruments, loud bangs and cracks of fireworks and monk ohm chanting for the public to enjoy. With Covid-19 globally and locally moving through its 2nd wave, the temple is cautiously closing the gates to the public for safeguarding measures.

For the local South African population that's so accustomed to enjoying this occasion at the temple, it with be missed, and local Chinese communities missing their heritage festival, they'll be engaged online and television for festivities coming from China.

Covid-19 has silenced this already quiet delight, for the safety of the worshipers and usual guests, but hoping to make the next opportunity something special.
