Memorial to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu 1931 - 2021
My Johannesburg emorial pictures.
South Africa and the world mourns, remembers and thanks the late Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who passed away on boxing day 2021. A person of God, a soul for humanity, a thinker and thought provoker, a liberator, a joker, a friend and a family man.
Revered for his opposition to the oppression of Apartheid, his work in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and his continued work to heal the wounds of South Africa and its past. He did not let up even into his later years, challenging the country and its leaders with their difficulties of corruption, uninclusive factions and prejudices. Alway aspiring for human rights and freedoms.
In Johannesburg there have been memorials to the late Archbishop from places of interest, such as his old home in Vilakazi street Soweto where he lived from 1975. Vilakazi street is a unique street in that it holds the only place on Earth where two Nobel Peace Prize winners stayed, namely that of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Other places of interest were the Anglican Cathedral of St Mary The Virgin Johannesburg, where he was ordained as a Deacon in 1960, then Dean of Johannesburg in 1975 and made the first black Bishop of the city in 1985.
He is loved, missed, remembered and thanked by his family, the people of South Africa, the church, all other religions and citizens across the globe.
His funeral is the 1st of January 2021, St George's Cathedral, Cape Town
