The Igbo term "Di" does not simply mean husband; it carries a deeper meaning. In literal terms, "Di" signifies "master" or "Lord." Therefore, within the Igbo community's understanding of family dynamics, the "husband" or "Dianyi" is not only the master of the household but also a master over his wives. This concept is further extended to various other words incorporating "Di," such as:

1. Dinwenu: Master that holds dominion over heaven or all things; Lord

2. Dianyi: Our master - used to refer to a father, older brother, or elder

3. Dinta: Master of hunting

4. Duru: Combination of Di (master) and uru (prosperity); master of prosperity

5. Diali: Master of the land - denotes a son of the soil with full land rights and ownership

6. D**e: Master of strength - associated with warriors

7. Dimkpa: Master of significance - when a young man reaches the age of importance and assumes the responsibility of providing for and protecting the family

8. Dibia: Combination of Di (master) and ibia/Abia; master of divination - references the wand, Abia, used in oracle consultation rituals by diviners

9. Diochi: Master wine maker or palm wine tapper

10. Dimgba: Master wrestler

11. Diokpara/Diokpa: Used for first sons or men of seniority - "okpa" or "okpara" shares etymological roots with "Nkpara," which signifies a staff of authority. In gerontocratic Igbo society, the staff of authority was passed on in order of seniority to the "ọtọchara" or first-borns.
Thus, "Diokpara" or "Diokpa" denotes a master of authority in relation to seniority.
