🆘🆘🆘 VERY VERY URGENT ‼️
PLEASE, THIS BEAUTIFUL SENIOR GIRL
NEEDS A RETIREMENT HOME ‼️

SOPHIE and her friend DUDLEY were hoping to find a home together but sadly that did not happen. We are now trying to find them separate homes as they are running out of time.

This is Sophie, a little 12 year old pom cross. She has lived all her life with kids and other dogs and is fully house trained.

Sophie is very bright and alert. She is independent and loves anyone that gives her love and attention, sometimes taking a bit of time to warm up to strangers. She is aware of any noises and will warn you before you can hear them!
This easy going senior lady still has lots of energy and is not needy at all.
Sophie would thrive in a relaxed, adult only home that can provide her with stability and loads of love.

To adopt SOPHIE please complete our application form and email to [email protected]

Application form found athttp://www.projectdog.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/Application-Form.pdf

PLEASE NOTE that all your current animals need to be sterilized if you wish to adopt.
Home check and adoption fee apply.

MEET ISLA!!! (KWAZULU-NATAL)

This STUNNING Tortoiseshell female kitty is Isla and she is 10 years old.

Isla is like no other cat you’ve ever met before. She has the most striking facial colouring and the most beautiful eyes.

She is gentle and calm and loves to be stroked while sitting on the couch or bed. She is a homely cat and doesn’t like to stray far or get into fights. She has a therapeutic purr that puts the children to sleep at night as she snuggles with them under the covers!

She has grown up with small and medium sized dogs, and her best friend is Izzy, the Yorkie. It would be so wonderful if she coould be adopted together with her Yorkie friend, however they can go separately as well.

She is very unique in that she will walk with a harness and leash, and prefers to go to the vet like this than in a cat box.

Isla loves to be outside with the children when they are playing or when her mom is gardening, and will also follow her mom around the garden too.

She is just most loving, divine cat you’ll ever meet.

guys!

My mom has permission to do the sanctuary on the property !

I so excited as I like it here a lot!

I'm still very scared of lots of things, but I am learning that I can be safe too.

My mom says now she needs a sponsor for building a run and I said no....just for bikits please.

She says she needs to build a very nice place to help more dogs like me and help them to learn that life can be awesome.

If you'd like to help my mom, a nice share of the Rescueology SA Animal Welfare page would help, or ...maybe a box of bikits.

This is a 1950’s photo of Sgt. Reckless and Lieutenant Petersen during the Korean War.

She was originally named Ah Chim Hai which translates to "Morning Flame" or "Flame-of-the-Morning” which was also the name of her dam, a racehorse at the Seoul race track.

She was purchased in October 1952 for $250 from a Korean stableboy who worked at the Seoul racetrack and needed the money to buy an artificial leg for his sister. Members of the United States Marine Corps. purchased Reckless to carry supplies and equipment to the soldiers on the front lines.

She quickly became part of the unit and was allowed to roam freely throughout the camp, entering the Marines' tents, where she would sleep on cold nights, and was known for her ability to eat nearly anything, including scrambled eggs, beer, Coca-Cola and reportedly $30 worth of poker chips.

She served in numerous combat actions during the Korean War, carrying supplies and ammunition, and was also used to evacuate the wounded. Learning each supply route after only a couple of trips, she often traveled to deliver supplies to the troops on her own, without benefit of a handler.

The highlight of her nine-month military career came in late March 1953 during the Battle for Outpost Vegas where she made 51 solo trips to resupply several front line units. She was wounded twice in combat and given the battlefield rank of corporal in 1953. Later she was promoted to Sergeant in 1954.

In 1953 her Marine Unit issued a challenge to Native Dancer, who was defeating all comers for a Match Race in Korea at Upsan Downs a racetrack fashioned by the Marines. The challenge was never taken up by the Dancer’s connections.

She also became the first horse in the Marine Corps known to have participated in an amphibious landing, and following the war was awarded two Purple Hearts, a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal as well as other military honors.

She left Korea with her Marine Unit and after living briefly with her handler, Lieutenant Eric Pedersen, she resided at Camp Pendleton until her death in 1968.

A statue of Sgt. Reckless was unveiled on July 26, 2013, in Semper Fidelis Memorial Park at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, one day before the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. There is a lock of her tail hair in the base of the statue.

A memorial to Sgt. Reckless at Camp Pendleton was dedicated on October 26, 2016. It is similar to the one located at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. The Kentucky Horse Park also has a statue of Sgt. Reckless.

She was honored at Aqueduct racetrack on November 10, 1989 where the first race on the card was named in her honor. In 1997, LIFE magazine listed her as one of America's 100 all-time heroes.

There are at least three books about Sgt. Reckless. The first is They Called Her Reckless by Janet Barrett and the second is Sgt. Reckless: America’s War Horse by Robin Hutton and the last one is: Reckless: The Pride of the Marines by Andrew Geer.

Before embarking on their new life in Cairo, our founder Dorothy Brooke had become aware of the fate of former war horses that were now languishing in poor conditions in Egypt. These horses had been born in the UK and were shipped overseas to serve in WW1, but they had never been returned home. The official reason at the time given for this was ‘lack of transport’, but it was a commonly held view that they were sold to Egyptian horse traders as the easiest option after the war, and many British horse lovers felt a sense of betrayal about this.

Now resident in Cairo, Dorothy felt a strong urge to seek out these horses and do whatever was needed to ease their suffering. It wasn’t an easy task at first – it took weeks of enquiries before she found her first one, an emaciated old chestnut horse with a clear army brand on his near quarter, whom she named Old Bill. He had served in Palestine once, but was in a terrible state now, with lifeless eyes and a gaunt frame supported by four shapeless swollen legs that trembled under his weight.

Dorothy went on to find hundreds of poorly and worn-out animals desperately in need of help. She set up the Old War Horse Campaign of Rescue, and began raising the funds needed to buy the horses from their owners, the first stage in lifting them out of a life of pain.

To raise more funds she wrote a letter to the Morning Post (which later became the Daily Telegraph) exposing their plight. The public were so moved they sent her the equivalent of £20,000 in today's money to help end the suffering of these once proud horses.

Within three years, Dorothy Brooke had purchased five thousand former war horses. Most were old, exhausted and had to be humanely put down. But thanks to her compassion, they ended their lives peacefully.

Dorothy Brooke knew thousands of hard working horses, donkeys and mules were still out there suffering, so in 1934 she founded the Old War Horse Memorial Hospital in Cairo, with the promise of free veterinary care for all the city’s working horses and donkeys. And that is how The Brooke Hospital for Animals was born.

Happy birthday Dorothy, and thank you 🧡
