It has just launched this year to release on several digital stores for promotion and marketing purpo
ses. Skalla Records was founded by Andries Jezile, Tebogo Comfort Leshotho and Tshidiso Stephen Moeng in 2008 and quickly became a well known, well-respected and well-recognised underground Afro Deep and Soulful House music label around the city. The label was conceived as a means of distributing various works by Tshidiso Stephen Moeng and Tebogo Comfort Leshotho also known as “Monocles & Slezz” who have masterminded many of the earlier releases under respective labels namely; Melomania Records (Canada), Cover Music (Spain), Arrecha Records (Netherlands), Vialocal Recordings (Italy), Afro Central Records (South Africa) and Herbal 3 Records (South Africa).
“Monocles & Slezz” are the key members of this label and also have other members namely Mogomotsi Jr. Leshotho known as “DJ Prinsloo” and Lebohang Phakane known as “Lebza” around the area. The label is still growing in terms of music business and other music related matters. The label is in the process of engaging with other record labels that are around the Free State so as to build a label that has relationships with other neighbouring record labels. The label also serves as a helping hand to artists around the Free State and will continue to do so until its goal is reached. The label is also known as “Skalla Productions”. The start of this label was initially inspired by many label owners who are successful already within the Free State provinnce, the first ever release of “Monocles & Slezz” was actually a remix they did on Obakeng Tabe’s known as “Disco 55” and a vocalist named “Silver’s” release titled “Mamosadi” which was made possible by Tiisetso Rafutho (Skalla Records Artists Manager) who then introduced us to another Indie music label manager who stays in Soweto named Linda Msiza of “Afro Central Records”, it’s through Linda that the duo “Monocles & Slezz” has grown to this extent. The duo has been working under Afro Central Records and they ultimately saw a demand in the Free State section of music producers who want to be showcased, that is one of the reasons “Skalla Records” was launched officially.
“Monocles & Slezz” recently released an EP under Afro Central Records which was then picked by Afrodesiamp3.com as their favourite EP under Afro Deep genre on the moving and big magazine called “BPM magazine”, the EP was selected for September/October 2011.
“Monocles & Slezz” is also working with one of the top DJs on Lesedi FM known as “DJ Finzo” on his upcoming album titled “Sweet & Short”, one of the songs in the upcoming album is already being showcased on several Radio stations and it’s getting good feedback. The label however is still dynamically growing and will be home for many Free State music lovers. – SKALLA RECORDS (c)
