LEGENDARY SOUTH AFRICAN ACTRESS CONNIE CHIUME DIES AGED 72.

South Africa is mourning the death of one of the country’s great actresses, philanthropist, and entrepreneur, Connie Chiume.

In a short statement, her family asks for privacy as it comes to terms with the loss. The internationally acclaimed Chiume has been a household name in the South African entertainment industry for more than four decades, with extensive experience in theatre, television and film.

The multi-award-winning Welkom-born actress was also an arts activist and worked with various organisations to improve and promote African culture.

Tributes have already begun flocking in on social media for the veteran actress, whose art and skill, have captivated the attention of millions of South Africans over the years.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENTS AND AWARDS:

Connie Chiume who was born Temweka Gabisile Chiume on 5 June 1952 in Welkom where she also grew up, was known for her roles in films like 2018's Black Panther, Black is King and Blessers.

After spending time overseas after completing matric, she returned to South Africa and was cast as Thembi in the 1989 series Inlom' Edla Yodwa and also had a role in the 1990 film Warriors from Hell.

In television, she appeared in various SABC1 series from Soul City for which she won the Avanti award in 2000 for Best Actress in a drama series, to the second and third seasons of Yizo Yizo, three seasons of Zone 14 as Stella Moloi, as well as in Generations.

It was however her role in e.tv's Rhythm City where she portrayed Mamokete "Kete" Khuse for almost a decade from 2007 until 2016 that truly solidified Connie Chuime's persona as a beloved South African television mother.

Connie Chiume's other TV roles ranged from appearing in four seasons of Gomora on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161), to Netflix South Africa's Queen Sono, SABC1's Mazinyo Dot Q as Ma Mavuso-September, to SABC2's drama series 90 Plein Street and Thula's Vine.

Connie Chiume also had TV roles in Easy Money, Grassroots, in two seasons of SABC2's Home Affairs, three seasons of Mzansi Magic's Housekeepers drama series, two seasons of It's Complicated, the second season of Ring of Lies, SABC1's Sgudi Snaysi, Soon Comes Night and across three seasons of Khululeka.

She was also in SABC2's Stokvel sitcom, made a guest appearance on SABC2's Vetkoekpaleis and was a celebrity contestant on the first season of e.tv's game show I Love South Africa.

Connie Chiume's extensive film career include movie credits on 1994's The Air Up There, Chikin Biznis ...The Whole Story!, 2000's I Dreamed of Africa, In My Country, Fanie Fourie's Lobola, the 2015 short film Lerato, 2019's Losing Lerato, the 2020 short film What Did You Dream?, Seriously Single and 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

She also starred and directed in the 1998 made-for-TV movie Tierarztin Christine III: Abenteuer in SudAfrika.

For her contribution to the arts, Chiume was bestowed with several prestigious awards.

In 2000, Connie Chiume won the award for Best Actress in a drama series at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) - one of three Golden Horns she won over her career. She also received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 6th Royal Soapie Awards, the 16th SA Film and Television Awards (Saftas), and the Hollywood and African Prestigious Awards in the U.S.

Connie Chiume was married from 1985 to 2004 and leave behind two adult sons and two daughters.

As the Mrs South Africa pageant, which seeks to give married women a platform to become the country's ambassador, returns, the top 30 finalists were recently announced at a ceremony held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Making the cut is Limpopo-Born Minki Thokoane who says that being part of the pageant is a dream come true. Minki plans to empower the public through creating awareness around women empowerment and education.

Minki Thokoane Is from Kutupu village in Makhuduthamaga municipality, Sekhukhune district, and is a professional Process Engineer with about 6 years experience in Process Re- Engineering , Process Engineering and Continuous Improvement, currently employed as a Software Engineer in one of the biggest banks in South Africa . Minki is passionate about success.

MK Party Deeply Concerned About Brutal Killings of its Members.

The MK Party expresses its profound sorrow and deep concern over the brutal and cold￾blooded killings of our members. These heinous acts of violence, which began before
the elections and continue even now, represent a grievous assault on our democratic values and the safety of our community.

We are devastated to report the further cold-blooded murder of another one of our
members today that took place in front of his wife and children, compounding the
tragedy and trauma experienced by his family and our party.

Despite the interventions made by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in
apprehending those responsible, we find it deeply troubling that the SAPS and the
South African Defence Force (SADF) are now deploying police and soldiers in readiness
to quell potential violence from MK Party members. This stance is profoundly
misplaced and unjust, as it is clear that our members are victims, and not the perpetrators of these violent acts.

As a responsible and concerned party, the MK Party leadership through its
spokesperson and communications department, initiated urgent discussions with
Minister Bheki Cele, wherein there is consensus that MK Party commits to working with law enforcement agencies, to ensure the safety and security of our members, South
Africans and civil society at large.

We will continue to engage SAPS and all law
enforcement agencies to ensure accountability and urge them to act swiftly and effectively in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

We are also aware that certain thugs
and criminals will want to use the narrative to drive violent initiatives by wearing our
regalia and therefore perform acts of violence in the good name of MK Party to discredit
and paint MK Party leaders and members as war mongers, when in actual fact, it’s MK
members that are being targeted as murder victims on a daily basis throughout the
country. We reiterate our continuous call to all MK Party members and supporters to
remain calm and be patient, despite all forms of provocation.

Our commitment to peace and democratic principles remains steadfast, and we urge our community and South Africans to stand united and refrain from any retaliatory actions.
We also urge the media to refrain from driving an agenda that aims to drive a negative
narrative against MK as a party that harbours criminals and violent members of civil
society.

The MK Party stands with the families of those who have lost their lives and
vows to continue advocating for justice and security for all our members, including all
political parties that want a peaceful, patriotic, and loving South Africa.

THAPELO'S BOOK SPARKLES THE PLATINUM STREAM ROUTE ACTIVATION.

Thaba Moshate – The Sekhukhune District Municipality, Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality, National Heritage Council, and Sekhukhune Community Television (SkCTV) converged at Thaba Moshate Hotel Casino and Convention Resort on the evening of Friday, 24 May 2024, for a landmark event.

This followed a full day of activities that commenced at Bushmen Rock Shelter and Phiring Village under the Ba-Dinkwanyane Traditional Authority, part of the PESP3 programme implemented by the Sekhukhune Community Television Initiative. Mr. Puleng Mmotla, Communications Officer of Sekhukhune Development Agency (SDA) and Process Driver for SkCTV, expressed his pride in being an implementing partner of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP3), funded by the National Heritage Council.

During a recent working session focused on restoring heritage sites in Mashishing, Botshabelo, and Fetakgomo Tubatse, they encountered a remarkable young author, Mr. Thapelo Mabowe Sekhukhune. Thapelo, who lives with an intellectual impairment disability, captivated everyone with his essay titled ‘KGOŠI DINKWANYANE, BROTHER DIFFERENT: My great granfather’s right to be different and dignified.

This essay, which won admiration from his peers, inspired Thapelo to transform it into a non-fiction book promoting heritage, retaining the same title as his competition entry. The PESP aims to create employment for artists, creatives, and heritage sector workers. The PESP3 programme has led to the production of several notable works, including the book ‘Touring with South Africa’s Living Human Treasure’, which honours Queen Katrina Esau and collates experiences of PESP3 participants exploring heritage sites in the Sekhukhune and ZF Mgcawu Districts.

Major themes of the book include cultural exploration, youth empowerment, and heritage preservation. Thapelo's book, ‘Kgoši Dinkwanyane – Brother Different’, was presented during the launch to Ms. Bongiwe Magasela, representing the CEO of the National Heritage Council, alongside leaders from Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality and the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality. This event also marked the activation of the Platinum Stream Tourism Route, highlighting the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Sekhukhune District and aiming to boost local tourism, promote cultural heritage, and create economic opportunities. Programme Director of the book launch ceremony, Mr. Romeo Maroga, Manager for Local Economic Development (LED), stated that the objective of the launch was to engage the public and media with the PESP3 books, their production processes, and their connection to the Platinum Stream Tourism Route.

Mr. Mmotla added that the launch was designed to promote the outcomes of PESP3 and showcase the programme’s achievements. The event featured immersive tourism experiences, book signings, and giveaways, generating excitement and anticipation. Mmotla emphasized that the book launch facilitated networking opportunities, encouraging interactions between authors, readers, and industry professionals.

The official handover of the books to the National Heritage Council marked a significant milestone, and he extended gratitude to PESP3 participants for their contributions to literature, promoting a reading culture, and fostering a love for heritage in Fetakgomo Tubatse and the broader Sekhukhune District.

Thapelo's mother, Veronicah Thembisile Sekhukhune, expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the community’s support. She noted that the event was not only a celebration of Thapelo's achievements but also a powerful affirmation of the importance of voices and contributions from persons with disabilities in society.

The evening at Thaba Moshate Hotel Casino and Convention Resort was a testament to the spirit of heritage, cultural preservation, and the power of community support, setting a glowing precedent for future initiatives within the Sekhukhune District.
