Bavianskloof Hike

A short hike with beautiful views.

We hiked Baviaanskloof in Hout Bay with our 3 year old. Its a short hike to the beautiful waterfall. Grace walked the whole way there and back so I would say it's suitable for children.

There are a lot of rocks on the path making it adventurous but not too strenuous. The path is not clearly marked so I will try my best to guide you below;

When you get to the end of bavianskloof road you will see a rock with the number 63 on it. This is the start of the hike. You will walk between trees that were cut down and sometimes against the fence on rocks. You will cross 2 wooden bridges before getting to the waterfall. You will come to an opening where you can go left or right. Right is nothing really but you can get some beautiful views from there. Left is the path to the waterfall. Follow the stream and you will get there.

What an amazing experience!!
We toured the South African Airforce Museum this past Saturday. We received a warm welcome from the Friends of SAAF Museum, Ysterplaat. The tour to the big boy hanger was definitely our highlight.

They are open every Saturday.
Entrance is free but donations are always welcome.
Boerewors rolls, drinks, t-shirts and caps are on sale.
Open from 08h00 until 13h00.
The No 4 hangar (big boy hanger) closes at 13h00.

Have you been to the FunFair?

We took Grace for her first experience of the fun fair today and she enjoyed it to the fullest.
FunlandSA is currently at the Bellpark Primary School in Bellville.
They are here till the 21st March. Then open again on the 25th March.

Vergelegen Wine Estate

We spent my birthday afternoon at this beautiful estate among the fields of majestic sunflowers at Vergelegen Wines which blooms during the summer months.

After taking your pictures with the sunflowers, the kids can play at the big beautiful playground. Swings, slides and a wooden jungle gym to name a few. It is well shaded by the trees.

Parents can order from the Stables restaurant and sit outside while watching the children play. The stables restaurant is just one of their two restaurants.

Take a walk in one of their 18 gardens and enjoy the beauty of the flowers and views of the mountains.

Melkbossie Farm Animal Sanctuary

We visited this beautiful farm situated in Melkbosstrand.
Entry is free as they work on donations only. There are donation boxes located in different areas of the farm.

You can purchase animal feed at the coffee shop and feed the animals. We fed the ducks, chicken, horses, sheep, goats and rabbits.

You can play a round of putt putt. There's also a children's play area and Pony rides available.

A shaded party shed is available on the farm for kiddies birthday parties. It can accommodate 20 people seated.

Personal tip: It was a very hot day when we visited. The sand was blistering hot and we wore slippers. I heard a few of the children (as well as Grace) complain about the hot sand which was uncomfortable on their little feet. Wear sneakers or a closed shoe rather on a very hot day.

Paradise Park Newlands

Entry is free.
Home to a huge tree house perfect for the little ones to climb. There's a swing suspended from the tree apart from the playground on the other side with swings, slides, a see-saw and a wooden jungle gym to name a few.
Pack a picnic bag and have a picnic under the trees while you watch the children play.
Bonus is the massive beautiful trees providing plenty of shade.
Water play is also an option available but we have not tried it on this trip.

A beautiful gem on the West Coast..

We took a trip to the Silwerstroom Tidal Pool and boy was I glad that we did.
Entry is free.
As you enter the resort, cars are checked for alcohol and weapons by the provincial law enforcement. They also patrol the area. The Identikidz program is also active at the beach tagging your children with armbands just in case they get lost.

There are lifeguards present at the tidal pool. The pool is clean and the crystal clear water was not as cold as I expected it to be. It's shallow for a few meters in which is perfect for toddlers to play.
There are swings and slides for the children to play and plenty braai spots available. The grass area is well kept as well.
The ablution block was clean.

We will definitely go back here and this place might earn a spot in our top 5 favorites.

Bosrivier Camping Cedar Escape Citrusdal

We camped at the Bosrivier Campsite in Citrusdal.
There are 5 campsites available on the plot and each site are allowed 6 people including children of any age.
There is a bathroom and toilet and a stoep with a kitchen and plug points.
Its beautifully kept with lush green grass, plenty of space for the children to run around and a river where we swam. The weather was extremely hot during the day with temperatures going up to 34 degrees but at night it felt like winter. Temperatures dropped to 11 degrees and was extremely cold.

My personal experience... I loved it!
🏕️With only 5 spots available it's not over crowded.
🏕️ The huge space for the children to play
🏕️Electricity
🏕️Well kept toilet and shower
🏕️Trees for shade
🏕️The kitchen/stoep area

As a mom, especially a first time mom, every first experience with your baby/toddler is something new for you too.
When it came to Graces first dentist appointment last year I Googled (yes I am a Googler which isn't always good) I also checked recommendations on mom groups on Facebook and found Happy Tooth Emporium in Goodwood. Gave them a try and I was so happy. You can see my post on Graces first dental appointment.
A few weeks ago we took Grace for her second appointment and to our dismay we were told that she has cavities and will need to go to theatre to have them filled. Immediately my mind started racing... My first response is always to check the mom groups to read up about other moms experiences. I guess that is how I calm my mind. The unknown scares me. We were referred to the Wynberg Cape Dental Theatre. I searched high and low for posts of where moms took their little ones and what their experiences were. I found nothing. I prayed about every hour from the night before and asked God to lead because my nerves were shot especially knowing she will be under general anesthesia.

For parents that are taking their little ones to theatre for the first time for cavities... Here is my experience....

We were booked for 8am Monday morning so Grace wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything 8 hours before. This stressed me out because if she asked for water in the morning my heart wouldn't have been able to handle saying no. So I decided to speak to her. I explained everything including that she won't be able to eat or drink anything in the morning. She's afraid of the mask so I had to tell a little white lie and explained that the mask has fairy dust that will help her to fall asleep and then the fairies will work on her teeth. (She likes Tinkerbell) She thankfully understood and was excited.

I woke up her up closest to the time we had to leave home. We got to the theatre reception an hour before her appointment to fill out paperwork. The friendly staff helped with this. There were teas and coffee available for the parents.
Afterwards we were taken to the theatre waiting room. The anesthetist and our amazing dentist, Dr Khalfe, explained everything beforehand.
One parent is allowed to go in for when they are giving her the anesthesia. Once she was asleep I was asked to wait in the waiting area again. Dr Khalfe gave me a mom to mom hug and assured me that Grace is in good hands. I needed that.
The procedure was about 45 minutes. One parent again is allowed to go in again for recovery so this time my husband went in. 10 minutes after he went in, he walked out with my little Grace who was still very drowsy.

Everything went so well and I was such a happy mama. A few hours later she was full of energy again and so happy that the fairies fixed her teeth. I am so greatful to the doctors that worked on her and with us.
My advice... Please make night time brushing a priority. Life gets busy and we forgot how important night brushing really is. It's even more important than your morning brushing.

Putt Putt anyone?

Grace played putt putt for the first time and boy oh boy was it fun and funny at the same time. She ran after the ball, picked up the ball before it hit the hole and held the gold club with one hand mostly. It was beautiful watching her learn. She decided her way was the right way to play and wanted to teach her mama how to play.

It is located at the seapoint promenade and costs R40 per player 18 holes
