The Critical Weekend: A Mother's Desperation

During a challenging weekend, another Red Cross doctor expressed concerns over Abubakr's condition. Fully dependent on a ventilator and numerous medications, Abubakr faced a life-threatening crisis as carbon dioxide built up in his body despite the ventilator's efforts. Family members anxiously sought updates as the situation grew dire. Using an oscillator failed to improve his condition, leading to alarming levels.

=======

“The following weekend, the Doctor's face was not content with Abubakr at all. At the time he was fully on the ventilator …drips, other stuff to help stabilize and fight. The ventilator pumps into the lungs and is supposed to pull out the carbon dioxide but it seems trapped somewhere. It was now Sunday evening, going in for the 2nd week and I have family asking what’s going on …My brother said, ‘Why are you going quiet? Kanallah …what is happening with Abubakr?’ I said, ‘Yoh, Isma’eel, we’re like so exhausted already and running out of options. Sub’ghaanallah, I just don’t know what to do anymore! Make duah, he’s just not waking up …he’s not improving! They’re doing last resorts with the Oscillator.’
The Oscillator machine is capable of ventilating normal or sick lungs, but he was not even on there for 5 minutes and immediately I could see he was unhappy. Because his levels dropped and his heart rate escalated! They were rounding up his team and the rest of the afternoon was a blur to me. Doctors were coming in on their off days …and some I’d never seen before. ‘Abubakr has carbon dioxide poisoning, his liver is increasing in size, and his kidneys are starting to be affected!’ I didn’t know what to do. The last resort is to take a few steps back, to change all of the equipment. They’ve consulted with other Hospitals. ‘We think you need to call the grandparents, the family, make arrangements with your Imam and spiritual leaders.’”

With these handmade designs, discover the magic of transforming your home or workspace into a beautiful and blessed space!

Started 5-6 years ago, Redah Gallant and Ayiesha Solomon were inspired by the remarkable change brought into their home. During the month of the Quran, Ramadan, they placed a set in a room, and it instantly changed their children's behavior and attitude. The couple felt a sincere and burning desire to give everyone the same opportunity.

The goal is to turn empty spaces into beautiful and blessed places conducive to family gatherings, Quran reading, making Athkaar, and for kids and parents to sit together, relax, or hold Taalim sessions.

The name Albatool was inspired by Fatima Albatool, the most pure, which translates to "the hero" or "the champion." It's often associated with strength and nobility. In a broader cultural context, Albatool is sometimes used to refer to a woman who is strong, virtuous, and brave.

Redah and Ayiesha are also now blessed to have a daughter named Fatima, born after they started the business.

The sets are handmade in Istanbul in a small factory by skilled ladies who recite salawaat while making each piece, bringing salutations upon our beloved Nabie (SAW), ensuring that every set is crafted with care and spiritual dedication.

The Wait: An Intense Battle

For hours, doctors struggled with Abubakr. The dangerous virus was targeting his lungs. Despite being intubated and sedated, each day was a relentless battle. This period marked a crucial phase in Abubakr’s journey, showcasing the intense medical battles waged to save his fragile life.

-----

“The 30min wait turned out to be 4 hours, as they were struggling with Abubakr. The first thing I heard was ‘Mommy and Daddy, your baby is very sick and his lungs are not doing well’
They had tried to help and stabilize him as best as they could. The virus was deadly. They confirmed that my son has Adenovirus …a common virus often found in daycare settings and known for targeting the most vulnerable organs in a child's body. And for Abubakr, this means his lungs, especially because of the existing conditions 'But we’re going to fight this because we understand its impact on children and are prepared for its challenges.' they say.
Abubakr was sedated and received the necessary medical care. While they were helping him breathe, the virus not only attacked the left lung, but the right one as well. So, over a space of a week, it was a constant battle adjusting the medication to help.”

The Deadly Adenovirus Virus & Intubation:

Doctors discovered Abubakr had Adenovirus, a deadly virus attacking his lungs. Abubakr required intubation. The Hendricks-Cassiem family continued to fight for his life.

-----

‘So remember, he hasn’t really had anything since Thursday …bottle, breast, just fatigue and pap, throws up…
On Monday morning, a leading group of professionals took charge of Abubakr’s case …coordinating his care with the rest of the medical teams.
‘You’re son is working hard, but we need him to do better.’ It seems as the intubation was going to help him breathe so he can also fight the virus. And that was the last time I saw Abubakr with no medical devices attached to him.
I agreed, ‘Yes, do what you need to do, if he is working this hard and is already so tired, we need to help as best we can!’
An immediate procedure was scheduled that Monday. They told us it’ll take 30min, we can wait in the waiting room.‘

ICU:

Abubakr’s condition deteriorated, requiring ICU admission. It was a terrifying time for his family, who clung to their faith and hope.

-----

“…I was like ‘A collapsed lung ?! …But how? I don’t understand! I’ve been bringing him in, giving him the meds, how did it get this bad?’
…Here we are and this is what has now been caught, so all we could do was handle what we know, at the time. But Kasam, it didn’t dawn on me how bad a collapsed lung is. Alghamdulilaah, we were comforted and reassured that we’re in Hospital now …that we will receive the best care, and that I did everything right. From what I can recall, they started to remedy the situation, with antibiotics …oxygen, and pipe feeding, amongst other things. I also remember another good Doctor that was on call that weekend …from the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Abubabkr was struggling to breathe …I actually still have the video where he is breathing so rapidly and he wouldn’t drink from me.
The Sunday, he was very restless, wouldn’t fall asleep. The nurses came to assess and I confirmed that it’s been like this within the hour …he was not calming down! Abubakr needed high-flow oxygen and was to be admitted to ICU …his condition was worsening. I called my husband frantically and in tears, ‘I don’t know what’s happening - I don’t understand! We’re in Hospital where things are supposed to get better… they’re about to move him to ICU!’ We call the family and he is moved to ICU.”

A Collapsed Lung:

During a critical hospital visit, Abubakr was found to have a collapsed lung. The news was devastating, but his family’s hope and faith remained strong.

------

‘Two weeks later, the cough stayed, got worse and worse. Family members were like, ‘Azraah, are you sure he’s ok? Did you get him checked out?’ …and I’m like, ‘Yes, been to GP, been to another GP, back to the Pead, another Pead and the X rays are always fine’ …but the cough doesn’t want to leave, not even for one day!
I remember it was a Friday night and Abubakr did not eat anything for that whole day. I work from home and prior to this, when my boys had started at a new creche, the teacher suggested that she also take on the kids his age …I decided to send Abubakr at least for a week just to see how he would adapt - even if he was just about 10 months old. I also needed to go into the office on set days. But after just 3 days, Abubakr had a runny nose …
The next day, started vomiting and because he wasn’t also drinking on me, my worry was dehydration. I said to my husband, ‘Abubakr is getting sick again …we need to take him in!’ We try to get an appointment before Jumuah, but unfortunately our car had broken down …we were only able to go through later that Friday afternoon, to Christian Barnard.
The Doctor was amazing, actually he was my Doc when I was little and been in the family for years. He is recognized and well respected and brilliant at what he does. I trust him because he is thorough and I have always been content with whatever advice he gave me, as a mother, from a Pead point of view.
But his face changed whilst examining Abubakr …he asked that I run down myself as so not to waste any time, in booking an X-ray slot, before they close.
Abubakr was getting worse …fast …and there was an urgency in his tone.
I took my baby and did the necessary and he was then admitted.

The Doc was now back …looks at me and says,

‘I’m so sorry Mommy, but you’re son has a collapsed lung.’

Recurring Illnesses and Worsening Symptoms:

Abubakr faced recurring bronchitis and worsening symptoms, leading to multiple hospital visits. The concern among his family grew with each passing day.

---------------

‘This cough still bothered me and I remember asking my mother or anyone, at family functions ... ‘Just listen to Abubakr’s cough’ …even though he was his normal self. All the other developmental stages, for his age, were on point …crawling etc. but still just this cough. I decided to take him to the GP again in May …his passages were all clear and lungs were fine, after an evaluation, Alghamdulilaah. We thought that maybe the cough is just going to linger for a while…
But another month later, June - there was a recurring case of Bronchitis and I decided to take him straight to his Pediatrician instead, and he was again admitted for 2 days, after being hospitalized earlier in April.
But again, clinically he was fine ,,, ‘Mommy, it’s just a cough, his lungs are fine, breathing patterns are fine, there’s no wheeze, sometime’s the throat is dry, these things happen, don’t worry’
…I’ve been hearing these for a while now, and decided to insist on another X-ray …his lungs were absolutely fine, no water, no pneumonia. It was cleared up from the previous admission and medication. The Peads were happy!
In July, in a space of a week his brothers got sick Isma’eel and Imaad, who was at creche …flu, cold, runny noses. Ababak’r went back to being as pap as he was in April and that sound of the first wheeze was now back. I wasn’t happy at all and went straight into the Emergency room.
He was once again admitted. The Bronchitis was back, but Alghamdulilaah, this time it wasn’t as bad as the last time.’

Diagnosis:
Despite initial treatments, Abubakr’s condition worsened, leading to a diagnosis of Pneumonia. His tiny body fought hard, but the struggle was just beginning.
---------
‘I went home …packed up, took him into Christian Barnard Hospital and he was admitted immediately. During the stay, an X-ray revealed that his bronchitis developed into Pneumonia. But, Alghamdulilaah, he seem to have been improving and when we got discharged I was also given the enhaler ...pump to go home with and the antibiotics to complete ...I also got a nebulizer and after that, he seemed ok …seem to have gotten better and his energy levels went back to norm. I was comfortable, as a mother, to take him home and felt more educated. He still had a bit of a cough, though but nowhere near to the initial wheeze when we brought him in. We finished all the antibiotics at home.’

The First Warning Signs:

Abubakr was admitted for bronchitis, a seemingly routine illness that marked the beginning of a much larger battle.
----------
‘Abubakr was admitted at about 7/8 months old. It was change of season when he developed a case of bronchitis and we took him to a GP in our area, on a Friday. He was put on antibiotics but just 2 days later which was on the Sunday, I had to take him back and they were shocked as to how his condition had deteriorated. He actually got worse …he was very very pap and I didn’t know what to do anymore. We didn’t have a nebulizer at the time …and they put him on the
neb in the room.
We ended up staying for 2 hours …I was also shown how to work the machine. He didn’t get better and there was just this cough, that got worse.
They asked that I take him to hospital immediately.’

(Quran 2:261)

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain that sprouts seven ears; in every ear there are a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies for whom He wills.”
------
(Transliteration: Layyanāla llāha luḥūmuhā wa-lā dimāʾuhā walākin yanāluhu ttaqwā minkum)
(Quran 22:37)

“Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you.”

And as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

Honoring a Beloved Voice and Cherished Memories at Masjidur-Raghmaan

Masjidur-Raghmaan, close to my home, thank you to your Mu’athin for the beautiful Asr Athaan that reminded me so much of my father.

Masjidur-Raghmaan has always held a special place in our hearts, especially for my late father, Hajji Abduraghmaan 'Pinkie' Galant, and his beloved cousin, Ebrahim ‘Hiema’ Raban. Their bond was built on many memorable moments spent here in Jamaat, filling the masjid with their love and dedication. Other times, they would travel the world.

When my father was alive, we would sometimes hear a melodious voice that resonated deeply within us. I would rush inside and excitedly tell him, "Daddy, daars daai bilal-tjie alweer," and together we would listen in awe. No one was allowed to talk during this time, as this Mu’athin would perform the athaan in a 'laaghoe' or style that echoed my father's, until the second last line, which was his favorite and this guy, did it perfectly.

My father would also give his feedback along the lines of “Daar trek hy nou lekker lang …Hy haal reg asem …Daai’s a swaare draai …Beautiful!” And we would often wonder who he was, the age of this guy and talk about what he could do with his voice.

Today, as I listened intently to the Asr Athaan rendered from Masjidu-Raghmaan, it felt as though my beloved father was calling once again. The voice was familiar, and the slight distortion reminded me of how my father sometimes sounded when he didn't hold the mic properly. It brought back cherished memories and a poignant reminder of his presence.

To our family friends in Hanover Park, if you know who this Mu’athin was, please convey our heartfelt thanks. As a family, it would mean so much if he rendered more often.
I would like to sincerely gift this Mu’athin as well as an elder in his family copies of my book, Imam Haron's Bilal, which my father narrated and I wrote. This book details his life growing up in Claremont during the 1960s and, more importantly, his profound connection with his teacher, Imam Abdullah Haron, who was tragically tortured and murdered for his courageous stand against apartheid. And also his recollections of ‘voorwerk innie masiet’ This gesture comes from the bottom of my heart as a token of gratitude and remembrance.

May Allah preserve all our Bilals and bless this Mu’athin for his beautiful voice and call to prayer, and may Allah grant my father a high place in Jannah, InSha Allah, Ameen. It’s amazing how, amidst so many people, the void left by our parents remains irreplaceable. I am grateful to Allah for these precious reminders.

Masjidur-Raghmaan, you are forever a part of my heart.

Furthermore, Masjidur Raghmaan carries a special significance as it holds part of my father's name, Abduraghmaan. The name Ar-Raghmaan is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Most Merciful." My father would not have wanted his Janaaza Salaah (funeral prayer) to be held anywhere else but in this mosque. The outpouring of love and respect was evident as the mosque was filled to capacity, reminiscent of an Eid morning celebration. Such a turnout truly reflects the depth of his character and the impact he had on many.
In addition, As Surah Ar-Rahman beautifully reminds us, "Which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?" This was one of my father's favorite surahs. Whenever he was asked to speak, he always chose to talk about Allah's miracles: the bird bringing food for its young, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) not burning in the fire, Yunus (AS) in the belly of the whale, and the story of Prophet Yusuf (AS) and his brothers.

I make dua for all Mu'athins, for they are an inspiration to us, they are chosen by Allah to call the faithful to prayer. May Allah always make their paths easy in this life and grant them a place of honor in the next. How beautiful and noble it is to render the call to prayer, uniting hearts and summoning the community to worship.

Thank you, Masjidur-Raghmaan, for being a vessel of cherished memories. ❤️
