Media Release: Revised Qualifying Time for

With 150 days to race day, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) is excited to announce a significant change to the qualifying criteria for this year’s 98th Comrades Marathon. Effective immediately, the qualifying time for the standard 42.2km marathon has been adjusted to 5 hours for all participants.

This change is aimed at making the Comrades Marathon more inclusive and accessible to a broader range of runners, encouraging more athletes to qualify for and participate in this iconic event, come Sunday, 8 June 2025.

The decision was made after careful consideration and consultation with various stakeholders, including athletes, coaches, and running clubs.

CMA Chairperson, Mqondisi Ngcobo says, "We are thrilled to make the Comrades Marathon more accessible to a wider range of runners. This change reflects our commitment to inclusivity and the growth of the sport."

“The Ultimate Human Race continues to uphold its tradition of challenging endurance and celebrating the spirit of camaraderie and perseverance. We believe that this adjustment will inspire more runners to participate and experience the unique challenge and camaraderie that the Comrades Marathon offers.”

CMA Acting Race & Operations Manager, Alain Dalais says, "The new qualifying time is a fantastic move. It opens up the race to more participants and encourages a greater diversity of runners to take on this incredible challenge."

Monday, 5 May 2025 is the final date for submission of qualifying details for this year’s Comrades Marathon. Athletes are required to submit their qualifying race and time, running club details, provincial club licence number and fill in the medical questionnaire.

Qualifying for the 2025 Comrades Marathon is applicable as of 10 June 2024 till 5 May 2025. The qualifying criteria for this year’s Comrades Marathon will be to complete a standard 42.2km marathon in under 5 hours. ComradesMarathon 2025 entry process to reopen.

More Than A Race – Isiko Mpilo

In a bid to put runners first and due to popular demand, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has decided to reopen the entry process for a limited period.

CMA Acting Race & Operations Manager, Alain Dalais says, "Our runners have spoken, and we have listened. We were pleased with the entry cap of 23-thousand entries being reached within a short space of time, but have realised that many athletes were left highly disappointed at not securing a space on the start line.”

At its first meeting held last night, the CMA Board took a decision to reopen the entry process. A limited number of 1 000 entries will be made available to aspirant athletes on a first-come-first-served basis as of Friday, 6 December 2024 at 08h00.

This second entry window will close at midnight on Monday, 9 December 2024 or as soon as the entry cap of 1000 is reached, whichever comes first.

Athletes can get their entry in via the official Comrades Marathon website www.comrades.com or the Comrades App.

Entry fees remain the same as that of the 2023 and 2024 races and are as follows:

Entry fee is waived for holders of 25 or more Comrades finishes.

Runners will be pleased with the continuation of the Comrades Runners’ Relief Fund. Through this initiative, up to 1500 disadvantaged athletes may apply for a reduced entry fee of 50%. Terms and conditions apply. More details are available on the official Comrades website: www.comrades.com

Dalais says, “This event is more than just a race; it's a testament to human perseverance and the power of community. We look forward to seeing both seasoned athletes and new participants take on this incredible challenge."
