Media release from Voet van Afrika
Due to rain storms and flooding our usual 21.1km has unfortunately been rendered unsafe and impractical for the half marathon athletes. Ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all participants is our top priority, after careful consideration the Voet van Afrika NPC have decided to take an alternative route.

We are excited to announce that we will be using a route that has a special place in the history of the Voet. 20 Years ago, was the last time that the half marathon started in Napier. We believe that this route will not only bring back fond memories for some but also create new, cherished experiences for all athletes.

The route will take you for 4km on gravel road at the outskirts of Napier with fresh country air and fynbos. Joining the 42.2km athletes for the last stretch from Napier on tar road to Bredasdorp Sport Grounds where the warm hospitality of the Bredasdorp community is awaiting every athlete. This route also offers ample opportunity for support and waterpoints along the route.

We appreciate your understanding and flexibility in adapting to this change. Your dedication and enthusiasm are what make this event truly special, and we are committed to providing you with an exceptional road running experience.

The record for this route is men 1:04:53 and women 1:21:41

We looking forward seeing you at the starting line in Napier!

Final Comrades Route Cut-off Revised

With its focus on putting Runners First and in response to runner requests and ongoing efforts to ensure that participants have the best possible chance of finishing this year’s 97th running of The Ultimate Human Race, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has revised the final route cut-off.

CMA Race & Operations Manager, Ann Ashworth has confirmed that the CMA Board has approved the adjustment to the final cut-off at the 79.1km mark at Mkondeni (Top of Polly Shortts) from 11h10 to 11h20, giving the backmarker runners an added advantage to finish this year’s 49th Comrades Up Run.

Runners are advised to take note that this decision was taken after the final cut-offs had been published in the official 2024 Comrades Marathon souvenir magazine and the 2024 Final Race Instructions (including the International Athlete Guide). For this reason, the final cut-off reflected in the official race guide and final instructions is 10 minutes faster than the time that will be imposed on 9 June.

2024 Comrades Marathon Revised Cut-offs

Following receipt of numerous appeals and information related to the cut-offs to be implemented at the 2024 Comrades Marathon, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has revised the cut-off times to be applied during this year’s race. This move signals increased efforts by the CMA to be both runner-focused and responsive to fresh ideas and input related to the growth and improvement of this iconic national event.

CMA Race & Operations Manager, Ann Ashworth has confirmed the removal of the first cut-off point at St. Johns Avenue, Pinetown. This amendment has been made to account for the time taken for athletes to cross the start line, the ongoing roadworks at Sherwood and public recommendations made regarding the correct pacing to be applied by athletes in the first half of the race.

Being an Up Run, the first 38km of which involves solid climbing, runners will be well advised to start the race more slowly, conserving their strength for the more undulating second half. For this reason, changes have been made to the cut-off times to be applied at Winston Park and Drummond.

The following cut-offs will be applied at the 97th running of the Comrades Marathon on 9 June 2024:

Comrades Road unveiled

The rich and unrivalled history of the world’s biggest, oldest and most famous ultramarathon was recognised by the Msunduzi Municipality as it announced the renaming of Connaught Road to Comrades Road at Comrades House in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg last week (Thursday, 9 May 2024).

The Municipality had announced the plan to rename streets in Pietermaritzburg townships and suburbs through a Public Places and Street Naming policy passed by the Municipal Council in 2020 and called on community members for their input. The purpose of this project was to afford people the opportunity to live in places that they better relate to and take pride in.

The Chief Whip of Council and Chairperson of Public Places and Street Naming Committee, Cllr Sandile Dlamini said the project would allow the community members to dig into and engage their history to honour individuals who had contributed to the development of the city.

Together with the renaming of Connaught Road to Comrades Road, over 300 roads, three community halls and a councillor’s office are being renamed in five wards in the Msunduzi Municipality.

The unveiling of Comrades Road could not have come at a better time with a month to go to the hosting of the 97th Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 9 June, starting at the Durban City Hall and finishing at the Hollywood Bets Scottsville Racecourse, with Comrades Road forming part of the 85.91km route this year.

Msunduzi Municipality Speaker, Cllr Eunice Majola commented, “The Comrades Marathon, which has only ever been stopped by World War II and the recent pandemic, has a history as resilient and indomitable as the over 124,000 runners who have taken up its 55-mile challenge over the last 103 years.”

“The renaming of this road commemorates the iconic and historic legacy of the Comrades Marathon. It is a deep-seated recognition of the long and enduring 103-year old relationship that this race shares with the City of Pietermaritzburg. In the world of ultramarathons, no other event is more deserving of the honour of having the road on which its headquarters is based, named after it.”

CMA Heritage & Traditions Convenor, Isaac Ngwenya said, “We are so pleased that an iconic event like the Comrades Marathon finally has its street named after it, something that will remain for many generations to come. It is befitting that runners will get to finally run on this road as part of this year’s Comrades route and experience the joy that we feel today.”

CMA Chairperson, Mqondisi Ngcobo said, “We are deeply honoured that the Municipality has confirmed the renaming of Connaught Road to Comrades Road. The Comrades Marathon is a unique race with noble origins and many people have contributed to the success of this nation-building event. On behalf of the CMA Board, Staff, Race Organising Committee, runners, administrators and volunteers, we extend our appreciation to the Mayor, Councillors, Public Places and Street Naming Committee, and officials.”

Wally Hayward Marathon as a Comrades Qualifier

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has confirmed that some athletes who ran yesterday’s Wally Hayward Marathon in Gauteng as a qualifier for the 2024 Comrades Marathon will have their finishing times recalculated.

This comes in the wake of nearly 1850 athletes (including both 42km and 21km athletes) being affected by a misdirection in the route which occurred between the 2km and 3km mark due to the lead vehicle making a wrong turn at an intersection.

Runners at the front of the race consequently ran approximately 3km longer than the official race distance while runners closer to the back were redirected along the correct route and ran the usual 42km race distance.

CMA Race & Operations Manager, Ann Ashworth says, “The race timing service provider has calculated and published an adjusted 42.2km time and, for 9 athletes who missed the sub 4h50 qualifying standard, an estimated 48km time which will allow them to qualify for this year’s race.”

“We look forward to having this issue resolved by Monday, 6 May 2024, which is the final day for submission of all qualifying details for the 2024 Comrades Marathon.”
