Benoît has in excess of thirty five years of environmental engineering experience concentrating on the Water, Waste Water, Waste and associated Energy fields serving all tiers of government, mining, utilities, SOE’s, automotive, Food & Beverage, Iron & Steel industries. His current focus is around the revitalisation of the South African water sector with a lead role in the Public Private Growth Initiative (PPGI), coupled with the co-founding role in the establishment of the South African Water Chamber. Bridgetti is the Host of Conversations that matter, to educate, inform, build resilience, and inspire change. Water Security: The importance of water in local government

In a recent survey by the Mail and Guardian, the three biggest issues identified by voters, that influence elections are:

* Water Supply
* Water Cuts
* Water availability

In addition to these, the issues relating to sanitation, poor infrastructure maintenance, poor governance and corruption also highlight the problems faced by residents relating to water.

As the ultimate economic enabler, water security both in terms of quantity and quality forms the foundation for economic growth and addressing the issues of poverty, inequality and by extension the absence of water security exacerbates poverty and inequality and largely perpetuates the legacy of Apartheid spatial planning.

In terms of the current legislative framework, local government is a key player in the provision of water and sanitation and therefore it is important to understand the role of local government in the provision of water and sanitation services to communities and what voters should be expecting from their elected officials.
