World Record within Caster Semenya’s reach
Former deputy President of Athletics South Africa Mr Kakata Maponyane believes that Caster Semenya has a potential of breaking the800mters World Record.
Maponyane said: “Caster with her personal best record of 1:55 seconds this year, she can simply surpass the current World Record which is 1:53.28 seconds. She just needs to up her performance by more than two seconds. I am confident that she will do it”.
The current World Record of 1:53.28 seconds was set by the Czech international Jarmila Kratochvilova in 1983, which was before Semenya was born.
Semenya cruised to the final when she won one of the semi-final heat in the time of 1:58.15 seconds.
Semenya’s victory on Sunday will make her to be the second South African woman to collect a medal after Sunnet Viljoen collected a silver medal in javelin. Semenya’s victory on Sunday will ensure that SASCOC’s anticipated target of ten medals is achieved.
She appears to be the country’s remaining gold and World Record hopeful.

Germany are without suspended defender Mats Hummels and the injured pair of Sami Khedira and Mario Gomez.
Bastian Schweinsteiger hurt his knee against Italy but returned to training on Wednesday and will start against France, coach Joachim Low has said.
France coach Didier Deschamps has to decide whether to continue with Samuel Umtiti in defence or recall Adil Rami, who has completed a one-game ban. Midfielder N'Golo Kante also returns after serving a suspension.
Deschamps has a fully-fit squad to choose from, with all 23 players training on Wednesday.

The last time Germany faced the host nation in the semi-finals of a major tournament they won 7-1. Their astonishing victory over Brazil two years ago was the seventh time they have eliminated a host nation at a World Cup or Euros - with six of those remarkably coming at the semi-final stage.
One of those wins came against France in 1982 in one of the most memorable games in World Cup history.
After an epic 3-3 draw, Germany emerged victorious from the first ever penalty shootout at a World Cup. The game will forever be remembered for the infamous challenge by Germany goalkeeper Harald Schumacher on Patrick Battiston that resulted in the Frenchman leaving the field on oxygen with three cracked ribs, two missing teeth and a damaged vertebra.

Germany yet again emerged victorious from another shootout in their quarter-final against Italy on Saturday. The tournament specialists are steadily moving through the gears and will not be fazed by a partisan atmosphere in Marseille. "Germany are Germany" said France coach Didier Deschamps, "the best side in Europe and indeed the world."
Newspaper L'Equipe described France's performance against Iceland as "Presque Parfait" (Almost Perfect). At times they were electric and their forwards are having their own personal competition to see who can win the golden boot.
It has left Germany boss Joachim Low worried: "Italy were a team with automated plays. They are world class in playing them but they are predictable," he said.
"France are different. They constantly change positions, they are much more unexpected and difficult to predict," he added.
Deschamps' men are coming to the boil nicely as they target what would be a third victory on home soil in a major tournament.
However, they haven't beat the Germans in a major tournament since 1958 and this will be comfortably their toughest test at Euro 2016.

Supersport United midfielder Thuso Phala indicated that his roots are in Sekhukhune District in Limpopo. Phala said he was born in Limpopo, although he grew up Soweto, Gauteng Province. “My late father was from gaSekhukhune, I also born there, then grew up in Soweto. It is a Soweto culture that every boy who grew up in Soweto will start by playing street soccer before choosing the future sport. I only realized that I have a potential when I was selected by Highlands Park high school, that is the time when I started doubling my efforts.” said Phala.
Phala who played for Platinum Stars, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns said he was inspired by his mother Suzan Phala who has been into soccer for a longer period.
During an interview with PSL Sekunjalo presenter Cate “Kgadi e tshehlana” Moroane, Phala indicated he is committed to his work and that he always go for an extra mile to ensure that he is always fit for the match.
As part of his initiative to plough back to the community of Soweto, he has established the Thuso phala Foundation. “The foundation is administered by my mother whom I am confident will steer the ship well because of her wealth of soccer knowledge and experience. Baroka FC’s elevation increased derbies to five
The elevation of gaMphahlele-based Baroka FC from the National First Division to the lucrative Absa Premiership has increased the number of derbies from four to five.
Baroka FC will be the second club in Limpopo to campaign in the elite league jointly with the Johnny Mogaladi-owned Polokwane City.The other derbies are the Soweto – Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs, Kwazulu Natal – Golden Arrows vs Maritzburg United, Free State - Bloemfonetin Celtic vs Free State Stars, Tshwane – Mamelodi Sundowns vs Supersport United.
Baroka FC’s promotion brought joy and happiness to the people of Limpopo wherein the number one citizen of the province Premier Chupu Stanley Mathabatha welcomed the club and made an undertaking that he will provide a bull towards the club’s celebration which is scheduled for 25 June at Seleteng gaMphahlele.
During an interview with the station after Baroka’s promotion, Mathabatha said: “Baroka’s promotion will not only benefit the people on gaMphahlele, it will benefit many people from this province from ordinary people to established business people through business. The province will do its best to ensure that the two clubs get the needed support from the department of sports, arts and culture and business people”.
Baroka FC’s owner Khurishi Mphahlele said we cannot wait for the derby and the he is confident to collect a point in every derby match.
“Our promotion will afford our people more professional matches, which will also mean more business in terms of transport, accommodation, catering and other forms of entrepreneurship. I want to thank the people of Limpopo for rallying behind the club while campaigning in the National First Division and further appeal for that support to continue.”
Mogaladi on the other hand emphasized that the derby is expected to start from the wives of the two chairmen until to the supporters.
“We are happy for Baroka, for being promoted into the elite. I know it is very difficult, but Mr Mphahlele did it. We are waiting patiently for the real Limpopo derby”.
Thobela FM will broadcast all the derbies including most of the two clubs’ home matches. This will include the preview and review of those matches, from the coaches, players, chairmen and supporters’ perspective.
