Really glad I got to see Lee on his final lap a fortnight ago at the hospice in Christchurch, 2 hours on British Rail from London. I'm happy to say that I found him with his mental faculties fully intact and impressively zen about the moment we will all have to face in our indeterminate future. It was actually by far the best time that I had ever spent with Lee, we having had our silly faribles in earlier days. If there's one positive thing that accumulated years in this life can do for us, it's clocking the bigger picture and how we fit into it. I reckon Lee did that and was at peace with what he found. Hamba kahle boetie.

It's with great sadness that I see that the inimitable Mac McKenzie has gone to join his dad Sammy in the great goema troep in the sky. Rarely did I come across such an extraordinary character in our Shifty daze...or before...or I would imagine, hereafter. Go well my friend. I know you are already sorely missed, most notably by Angy, Hilton and I'm sure many others.

FILM SYNOPSES

Soweto Beach Party (2007 - Dir. Lloyd Ross)
Author/journalist/musician Rian Malan is tricked into performing with his band, Radio Kalahari Orkes, at the Soweto’s biggest entertainment event ... but that’s just the subplot!

Die Geheim van Slangfontein (2011 - Dir. Lloyd Ross, starring RooiJan Malan)
A desperate man searches for a mysterious town in the Kalahari outback. To find it, he follows the signal of a phantom radio station to the heart of a boeremusiek Utopia that's "...honderd jaar agter the tye, maar steeds op die spoor".

The Splintering Rainbow (2009 - Dir. Lloyd Ross)
A wry journey through the state of South Africa just prior to the 2009 elections when Jacob Zuma came to power. Rian Malan discovers that modern South Africa’s best weapon is its ability to laugh at itself.

Silver Fez (2009 - Dir. Lloyd Ross)
Once upon a time in a city at the end of Africa, two men were possessed by a dream that could come true for only one of them. Kaatji Davids was a house painter with barely two cents to rub together…but he did have an old banjo, some loyal friends and the audacity to imagine he might be the one to topple Hadji Bucks, undisputed champion of Cape Malay music ...

Pluck (2017 - Dir. Joelle Chesselet & Lloyd Ross)
An alternative history of the New South Africa told through the lens of Nando's ad campaigns, which kept a nation both reflective and amused through the growing pains of its young democracy.

The Voice Behind the Wall (2022 - Dir. Gideon Breytenach & Riku Lätti)
An examination of the Afrikaans music industry and the racial imbalances that persist almost 30 years since the end of Apartheid, exposing the erasure of brown contributions to the Afrikaans culture.

Warrick & I spent a lovely afternoon/eve with Vusi and Dave Matthews after his CT concert. Warra guy. Such great energy. Hilarious. And Vusi, it was delightful to see him looking so well after all his health issues. You got a real sense of what great tjommies the two of them are, even though Vusi almost stole the show with his appearance on Dave's song Everyday. 😜

Friends, a schedule for Shifty40 this coming weekend.

FRIDAY 1st
The Porchlights will do the main set, around which there will be what you could call an open mic vibe prevailing. Expect the unexpected.

Firstly, there’s a rumour that Was Daar will do a short vastrap set.

Secondly, there is another rumour that Marcel van Heerden will be doing a short set of material from the Koos (not Kombuis) era.

Thirdly, there will then be DJ-ing, firstly by the Kalahari Surfer, who has been busying himself with a batch of Shifty remixes, followed by sets from DJ Mad Elaine (AKA Joji) and DJ Glenda (AKA Glen).

Fourthly, there is also a possibility of some standup from our MC, the iniminiminimatable Robbie Thorpe, but only if he feels it. No pressure my friend.

Otherwise, Friday, you could say, is pretty chill.

SATURDAY is the main event, running so:
3pm - Swahili sw***er Simba Morri & Josh Hawkes
4pm - The Kalahari Surfer
5pm - Mac McKenzie & Hilton Schilder
6pm - Eating the potjie (dinner)
7pm - (Rian Malan) Was Daar
8pm - Koos Kombuis
9pm - The Hanepoot Brass Band
10pm - and (when everyone is too merry to notice the mistakes) The Shifty All Stars
11pm and onwards - more DJ vibes

The Shifty All Stars will cover songs by:
Bernoldus Niemand (featuring Hanepoot van Tonder)
The Genuines (Mac McKenzie & Hilton Schilder are present)
The Gereformeerde Blues Band (Jannie, Willem & Tonia are present),
The Happy Ships (Warrick Sony & Lloyd Ross are present),
Kalahari Surfers (featuring Warrick Sony)
The Kêrels (featuring Elvis van Heerden)
Khaki Monitor (Tonia Selley is present),
Koos Kombuis (himself),
Koos (the band, featuring Marcel van Heerden),
The Pressure Cookies (Tonia Selley is present),
Rian Malan (himself),
Simba Morri (himself).

So this is going to be something of a one time only and unique kind of jol. No more warnings given. If you haven’t already made peace with the fact that you’re going to b spending the weekend at the Steenbokfontein Quarry, maak gereed vir ’n naweek van FOMO. If you simply can’t make it, please consider going to the Shifty40 Quicket page and contributing to the event…call it crowd funding. Our budget is fkn tight and we’d like to pay the musicians more than the token fee they are getting for strings & things. No-one else is making money from this. R250 immediately gets you a download of the Was Daar album launching this weekend, and then a recording in a couple few weeks of the event itself. We would appreciated that very much indeed.

To be getting along with, here’s the Shifty LOVE compilation to get you in the mood (be aware ithis is more about the unrequited kind)… The next missives will be only to ticket holders

Did you hear the one about the author, the dancer, and the photographer who crossed the desert in dusty bakkies before stumbling into the bar at the end of the universe, where they fell in love and decided to form a band?

Was Daar .. is [almost] here

The The Shifty 40 Oppie Weskus Koppie is now only a week away. If you haven’t got your tickets yet(https://qkt.io/Shiftyturns40), Shifty opstoker cm troubadour, Rian Malan, has a few compelling words for you:

Yo Manne and Sisters! Tired of war, inflation and load shedding? Wish you were young again and heading for Jameson’s with a song in your heart and a fat skyf in your hand ‘cos it's Friday night and the Lurchers are playing and your lungs are bursting with the great rebel cry of the time: “F**k apartheid! Let’s dance!”

If so, and you haven’t already, you need to go online right now and book a ticket for the Great Shifty Records Reunion set to take place at Steenbokfontein farm on the West Coast, December 1 through 3, starring noted subversives and betogers from back when. The Great Koos Kombuis will be there, along with the Immortal Mac and Hilton from the Genuines and His Royal Highness Hanepoot van Tonder from too many great bands to enumerate. Not to mention Lloyd “Vyfster” Ross and Warwick “Kalahari Surfer” Sony, the okes with the musical caravan, and Simba Morri, the brother with the Swahili grooves. And many others!!!

Including but not limited to the artistes formerly known as the Vermaaklikheid Bakkery Orkes. This odd little folk outfit fell on hard times when the bakery after which they were named went bust, forcing them to become Was Daar instead. Was where? Well exactly. Some of the music is from the Sinai Desert, some from the dark side of the River Dniepro, some from Fietas or even um, Van Wyksdorp. They are going to launch their debut album “The Brak Sessions” at Shifty40 Oppie Weskus Koppie, and everyone who buys a ticket, of any kind, or generously donates moolah to the musicians here: https://www.quicket.co.za/events/235366-oppi-weskus-koppie-shifty-turns-40/ #/ will receive a download code for “The Brak Sessions” months before every other disconsolate member of the human race. What those sad people will be able to see however, is the vid of Was Daar's first single, but not before you have: https://youtu.be/ts0-gsYsDVA

Yes! Can you believe it? For those who make the trip to Farmer Burger’s, just south of Lamberts Bay, you get a fat jol in a unique setting in the Sandveld, close to some cool surf spots, Bushman caves, a chance of sighting the second longest train in the known universe, a famous seafood restaurant to visit, plus loads of cool music by various Greats and Immortals, plus a free record by a band you have never heard of and might not even like!

But your heart, dudes & dudettes. Your heart will know you’ve done the right thing by going among people who give you a lekker gevoel, cos you all know what it was to be young and alive and even voelvry in a strange place like the one we grew up in, and a bit like the one we live in today. Moenie fade nie, nê!

Look out for more updates…they should be coming in thick & fast over the next week.

Great article by Fred de Vries on the reissue of 'Niemandsland' by Koos Kombuis (and The Beatles nogal) you'll need to register to read it... if you haven't already (that's free)!

Koos Kombuis se 1989-album is ontmeng en op viniel uitgereik en dit het die toets van die tyd deurstaan.

It’s with great sadness that we see Hannalie, Shifty stalwart of yore, choosing to join the choir invisible. Hanna, you leave us to continue muddling through the life of the living, so much the poorer for your passing. My memory is not the best, but I will never forget your spirited enthusiasm in everything to do with Shifty, and the music you chose to involve yourself in thereafter. And your smile…and your empathy. We didn’t get to catch up very often these past decades, but I always felt your warmth coming through when we did, and I can only hope that you felt mine.
Sing well, my darling.
Big love
Lloyd

I feel as if I am waking up from a deep sleep, a tormented period in which my entire existence was a battle against brutal memories, against this ghastly past. And hell, I was only a protest musician. I wasn’t in the real war. I wasn’t in jail. Well, not for very long.
