In the era of lockdowns and social distancing, learning and self-development is centered in the home. Never before has it made more sense to study at a distance. Dreams of studying further do not have to be put on hold. There are several advantages of studying online, at home. People have the opportunity to plan study time around the rest of their day, instead of the other way around. Course material is readily accessible online, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All of these benefits help people to balance work and family commitments with their education. Advances in technology mean that people can watch live or prerecorded lessons and workshops as well as interact with instructors and fellow “classmates” via online forums. Collaboration is possible, despite the lack of face-to-face contact. WITS Enterprise Short Courses’ flexibility, agility and capacity to leverage multiple disciplines mean that it can deliver a holistic and comprehensive solution that can be customised to meet requirements in a short timeframe. An Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills development program being rolled out by WITS Enterprise has touched the lives of over 2930 educators, with the goal to equip them for the 21st century classroom. The Wits initiative enables intersection between ICT skills, digital pedagogies, and research to inspire disruptive innovations in the classroom. The initiative, funded by the provincial Departments of Education and the EDTP SETA, provides training in ICT, financial literacy and business acumen to teachers, focusing primarily on rural areas where skills gaps are most prevalent. The goal is to bridge the digital divide, to prevent the digital skills gap from widening and causing more digital inequalities in our schools. Since 2017, the initiative has reached 2106 educators in Limpopo, 550 in Mpumalanga, 175 in the North West Province and 300 in Gauteng. Currently there are four 13-week courses offered through the program. Course content is prepared by WITS University Academics and delegates are trained by a combination of WITS’ Academics, Sessional Staff and postgraduate students, most of whom are in the teaching profession. Educators are required to complete assignments and meet with their facilitators on a weekly basis and through various digital platforms to ensure continuous learning. Courses offered include Strategic Implementation of ICT Integration in Education [Teaching with Technology]; Information Technology and Programming Fundamentals; Financial Literacy and Business Fundamentals, and Digital Technologies for Civic Engagement and Digital Citizenship which offers participants with an opportunity to develop various digital and computing skills, including computer literacy, social media etiquette, digital pedagogies and digital literacy Wits Enterprise http://ow.ly/jFRM50yw7hO

The culinary landscape at Sun International’s Time Square South Africa in Menlyn Main continues to evolve. Adding a Mexican twist the diverse mix of eclectic restaurants at the complex is La Rosa. Offering an authentic Mexican experience, La Rosa Time Square is modeled on the award winning La Rosa Mexican Grille and Tequileria at Honeydew Village. Guests can expect the same energetic vibe, surrounded by by vibrant colours, beautifully crafted Mexican-inspired murals etched into the walls and a tequileria bar boasting the widest range of 100% Agave Tequila.
The staff is trained by the best. Under the leadership of a top chef straight out of San Diego, USA, they have learned all there is to know about the fine art of Mexican food and flavours. The menu reflects the playful and flavourful character of true Mexican fare, with tacos and burritos bursting with flavour, as well as a wide variety of starters’ tapas-style. La Rosa is an absolute feast – with its taste bud tingling dishes, lively atmosphere, exceptional décor, bright delights and accents of pink and blue, it is just the spot to indulge in some serious Mexican magic. The fiesta is always on.
La Rosa Times Square owners, Costas and James, have been in the hospitality industry for 30 years having managed and owned several successful restaurants. Tony Rose, creator and owner of the La Rosa brand, explains that in 2010 UNESCO listed Mexican as a world-heritage cuisine and is a favourite in South Africa.
“Tequila and Mexican food are the perfect ingredients for a great party,” he says.

Water conservation is culture at Sun International’s TableBay Hotel V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. The hotel has intensified its efforts to save water as the Western Cape remains in the grips of severe drought. Its concerted drive to conserve this scarce and precious resource includes a mix of technological and behavioural interventions. Through these interventions, The Table Bay has successfully retained similar water consumption during peak occupancy periods to that of its lowest occupancy periods. To improve the water efficiency of the hotel’s gardens, water wise plants are being planted; with the hotel’s flowering plants being replaced with succulents which require less water. In addition, the irrigation system in the garden beds at the main entrance has been replaced with a drip system which reduces water consumption by up to 60%.

Additional water meters have been installed to allow water consumption in different areas of the hotel to be monitored closely. With these water meters, the team will be able to incorporate water monitoring into the Energy Monitoring dashboard to measure usage and generate reports. This will enable the team to identify areas of high consumption and proactively implement tactics to curb it where possible. The hotel is also experimenting with various water saving devices in the kitchens where water usage is necessary. These include devices such as flow restrictors on taps. To inculcate a culture of water consciousness amongst staff, the hotel has implemented training and awareness programmes to ensure that employees apply water smart behaviours in their daily tasks.

The Table Bay has also introduced a campaign to engage its guests in its water saving efforts. Notices are placed on arrival, in rooms and bathrooms to advise guests about the hotel’s water savings campaign and offer easy tips for reducing water consumption that won’t compromise the guest experience. To minimize water use in the laundry, linen in guest rooms is now only changed every third day unless requested otherwise.
Guests are encouraged to participate in the water saving effort by:
· Showering instead of bathing
· Keeping their showers short
· Switching off the tap when brushing their teeth

Fresh seasonal flavours characterise summer dining at Camissa Brasserie atTableBay Hotel V&A Waterfront where lunch and dinner is always a sensory experience overlooking the busy working harbour. Buoyed by the lightness of the season, the summer menu encourages the exploration of diverse flavours from indigenous plants and herbs, many of which are foraged from Cape Town’s natural surrounds. Foraged salad leaves, dune spinach, spekboom, nasturtium flowers, num nums, seaweed and hibiscus are in the cast of foraged items which give summer dishes a defining flavour.

“Our summer menu has a decidedly rustic yet sophisticated feel, with artisanal salads and cheeses; locally sourced, free range meats and local sea delicacies combined with fresh, foraged produce. It is an enticing mix of textures and tastes that pay homage the season and our emphasis on delivering an authentic South African experience,” says Marc Weber, Food and Beverage Manager at The Table Bay.

The traditional samoosa has contemporary flair, stuffed with confit duck and served with toasted cashew paste, wild green salad and citrus gel. Other must-try starters are the beef carpaccio with biltong jam and goat’s cheese mousse, as well as the dune spinach and wild mushroom ravioli.

All of the pastas are homemade from scratch, with choices including a sumptuous seafood risotto burgeoning with local sea delicacies and foraged seaweed; a soft potato gnocchi on carrot puree and served with vegetable crisps, and the Camissa pasta which comprises beef short rib and handmade pasta ribbons in a red wine and herb sauce.

The selection of mains includes sustainable linefish with wild rosemary polenta and courgette batons; masala crusted Franschoek trout masala with roasted cauliflower and cumin sweet potato; kashmiri spiced prawn curry, Hibiscus infused chicken with quinoa risotto; wild rosemary lamb shank with home style pap and chakalaka croquette; parma ham wrapped Springbok with butternut and sweet potato puree and the ever popular Oscar’s Legend pork belly. A treat for meat lovers is the succulent Karan Beef fillet in a biltong coat with wild garlic potato crush with nasturtium pesto.

Salad seekers have a choice between roasted butternut salad with caramelised beetroot, goat’s cheese, mint and nasturtium flowers; the refreshing artisanal tomato and marinated bocconcini mozzarella, or the crispy calamari salad with hints of num nums, ginger and wild garlic.

Celebrating 40 years of success in the music industry, the American pop and Country duo brothers Howard and David Bellamy are ready to wow fans at Carnival City with popular hits once more. “Let your love flow” is definitely on the performance playlist, alongside other hits such as “If I said you have a beautiful body (would you hold it against me)”, “Redneck Girl”, “Sante Fé” and some of the other hits which had them topping several charts for many years.

Their top hit, “Let your Love Flow” was a smash hit in both America and Europe and top single of the Billboard Hot 100 back in 1976. Following this, the Bellamy Brothers found success in country music as well, charting 20 number one singles and more than fifty hits overall on the country charts.
